Chapter 45 - A Reward and a Farewell
Three days after returning to Ilstadt after the fierce battle at the fort. The Adventurer’s Guild officially handed me my reward.
Fifty-two gold coins for a total of twenty-six kobold goblin heads. Twelve gold coins for confirming the safety of the villagers. 250 gold coins for defeating the Dark Priest of the God of Destruction Ragnus. 12 gold coins for confirming the safety of Randy and Bud. In addition to that, the special reward for defeating the Silver Demon was 500 gold coins. If you add it all up, the reward is worth 826 gold coins.
If you divide the 826 gold coins into five equal parts, you get about 165 gold coins per person, but at Souya’s insistence, more rewards were allocated to Thomas and Rebecca. This is because most of the kobold goblins were defeated by the Windbreakers, and also as a consolation prize for those who died in the party. In addition, it also served as compensation for Rebecca’s magician’s staff, which Souya had destroyed.
Calculated in seven equal parts, the reward was eleventy-eight gold coins per person. Thomas and Rebecca were the only two people who were given a reward worth 236 gold coins.
The next day. Souya and the other of the subjugation team were at the Ilstadt carriage stop on the outskirts of town. After losing two of their members, the Windbreakers disbanded, and Thomas and Rebecca returned to their home village. Souya, Mia, and Merylou were there to see them off.
“Souya-san, thank you for taking care of me …… it’s thanks to you that I survived like this.”
Thomas, the hunter, bowed his head to Souya in front of the carriage at the stop.
“Thomas-kun, you saved us both ……. You are going back to your home village, aren’t you? I also heard that you are quitting the adventuring business.”
“Yes. I have to report to Randy’s parents, and Rebecca needs to recuperate for a while. I can’t leave her alone …… My role as the hero’s follower is over. I’ll go back to being a hunter.”
Thomas was not in good spirits, but unlike Rebecca, who was in an unstable state of mind, he was able to give a firm answer. With his aloof personality, he seemed to have nothing to worry about when he returned to the village.
“More importantly, I’ve been paid a lot of money, are you sure about that ……?”
“I know you have a lot of work ahead of you, so don’t hesitate. You’ll be able to compensate Randy-kun’s family and pay for the carriage to the village.”
“But ……”
“Thomas-kun, it’s always good to accept a gift from an older person. When you get older, you’ll want to look good to the young. You must understand that.”
Souya smiled and told Thomas in a pretentious way, and Thomas, who had been expressionless, broke into a slight smile.
“I understand. I’ll take it in obediently. I will never forget you …… Souya-san.”
After the conversation, Souya and Thomas exchanged a firm handshake.
“Goodbye, Thomas. It was fun shooting the bows in a row …… Finally. Who was better with a bow, you or me?”
Merylou smirked and looked up at Thomas. She seemed to think she was better than him, judging by her triumphant attitude. Maybe she was counting her hits.
“It’s …… me, I guess. The size of the bow is different …… With Merylou-san’s toy-like bow, you’d have to shoot twice to get one hit.”
“…… Oh, toy, you say! …… You’re the only person who can draw a longbow that big, you know!”
Being four inches taller, Thomas and Merylou had very different bow sizes in their hands. Merylou’s short bow was a little smaller than the standard short bow, but for Thomas, it might as well have been a toy.
“Haha, power’s my only good trait, after all …… But, Merylou-san is a better adventurer than me. I understand now what you mean when you say the wind is your friend.”
“…… Hmm, be a good hunter.”
Merylou was in a good mood at Thomas’ compliment and patted him on his broad back.
“…… Thomas-san, please take care of Rebecca-san.”
Mia bowed her head to Thomas with a worried look on her face. Rebecca did not come to greet her, as she remained in the carriage, nestled against the hearse that held Randy.
“Yeah, I got it ……. I’m sorry for everything that happened with Randy. Well, I think he had some serious thoughts in his own way, just from my point of view.”
Mia looked down at Thomas’ words. She had been struggling with her relationships, including Randy and Rebecca, and it must have been very hard for her to reconcile with Rebecca in this way.
“As for the rest, I’m sorry Rebecca didn’t come down to say hello ……But, She was very grateful to Souya-san for saving Randy’s corpse. I’d like to thank you on that too.”
Hearing this, Souya felt a little lighter. The fact that Randy’s corpse was still there might only be a consolation at least, but she might need it now.
“…… See you all then. If there’s a chance, let’s meet again.”
The carriage carrying Thomas, Rebecca, and Randy’s hearse began to drive toward their hometown. Souya and the others watched until the wagon was out of sight.
“Well then …… Now that we’ve seen them off, let’s go home and get some food. “
In response to Merylou’s clear voice, both Souya and Mia remained silent, perhaps still reeling from the parting.
“…… What’s the matter? You’re both so gloomy …… Okay, it’s my treat today. Let’s eat and drink plenty.”
“Oh, Merylou-kun …… are you sure?”
“Sawyer, you said earlier that it’s always good to accept a gift from an older person …… I’ll tell you what, I’m older than you.”
Seeing the older Merylou, Souya laughed and crumpled Merylou’s hair.
“Merylou-kun is such a good girl. I won’t hesitate to treat myself then.”
“Ahhh …… Souya, you, you’re treating me like a child again …… Stop messing with me!”
When Merylou removed Soya’s hand from her head, she glared at him.
“Kuku …… Well, let’s go then, Mia-kun.”
“…… Oh …… wait for me.”
He turned around and started to walk away, holding back her laughter, and Mia started to walk after him.
