Aion finished his preparations around midnight. Despite that, he still headed to the territory north of his. He had a feeling that negotiations wouldn't go well, but at least he should try to decrease the problems that his monsters and death knights will face.
The inhabitants of the main town of that territory still were wide awake and preparing for the attack when Aion showed up. That would make things convenient for him since he needed to talk with the leader of the place. Regardless, Aion landed in front of the mansion, and then the guards pointed their spears at him.
"My name is Aion Kresnik, and I have come to talk with your boss about the battles that are fast approaching," Aion said. "Call him now."
The guards hesitated for a moment since anyone would after seeing a guy falling from the sky in front of them. Still, they could feel a powerful aura on him that made his words persuasive despite his youthful appearance.
"You know, I can fly, I could have landed in the room of your boss, but I am here out of courtesy," Aion said. "There is a war to be fought, and I don't have time to waste here."
One of the guards looked at each other and moved his neck, signalizing him to move to the house. After five minutes, some guards showed up alongside a chubby man. He wasn't wearing his pajamas, so he wasn't sleeping while the entire town was working. Aion had expectations of him because of that.
"I am Aion Kresnik, and we need to talk about our possible cooperation against the invasion," Aion said.
"I am Heral Armand and current lord of this region… we should enter to talk about the details of this operation," Heral said.
"No need. I will be brief since I still have some work to do," Aion said. "I have two soldiers and some monsters protecting the port that I built. I need you to offer them support with long-ranged attacks behind the walls that have been built there. That is all that you need to do. If a powerful enemy shows up there, I will face it, that is all."
Heral didn't look convinced that such a plan would work. He knew about Aion's fame, but if he wasn't going to help directly, it felt like he would only sacrifice his soldiers for no reason. While the soldiers had the duty to follow the lords' orders, a single defeat would be enough for them to contest their authority and then find a way to overthrow them.
"It seems that you don't believe that I can pull this off," Aion said and then covered the armors of the guards with earth magic and then made them fly.
The guards tried to free themselves, but they weren't able to do anything. Eventually, Aion made them land and they pointed their weapons at him. Aion wasn't sure if he made his point clear, but he didn't want to waste more time on something that might not happen.
"That is all, if you want to protect your town from being damaged, you should take the battle to the port," Aion said and then used earth magic to fly away.
The guards looked pissed, and they had all the reasons to be. They usually hate to follow orders of those that were high-born, even more so when they were much younger and annoying.
"... Sir, what will be your orders?" The guard asked.
Heral considered his options, should he follow the lead of a famous and yet troublesome warrior and contribute with his fame, or should he focus on the safest thing to do and then let Aion's port be destroyed? Getting on his bad side seemed like the worst move, but he knew that his port had made him lose some money in the last six months…
Aion returned in a hurry to his town and checked if his mother had received any messages. She actually did it. The lords of the territories down south were asking for reinforcements. Aion wished that he could shout while saying to them to get fucked, but he doubted that his voice would reach that far.
"Rarth and the other refugees came early to ask what they should do during the battle," Artemisia said.
"Some of them might have experience fighting, but they haven't been training in the last few years. We shouldn't rely on them," Aion said.
"I will give them the task to make arrows and bolts then," Artemisia said.
"Arrows…" Aion said.
"What is wrong?" Artemisia asked. "Do you have something else in mind?"
"Nothing, you should tell them to do that," Aion said. "I will try to come here again before the next battle, but don't be surprised if that doesn't happen."
