Four days later, Aion began to get excited about the stop that they were going to make, but then he realized that they could only approach at night. While the ship could move while invisible, it would make signs on the ocean. To avoid any surprises, they slowed down after a while.
When night came, they landed nearby a forest. It was a bit hard to see, but he could find some lights in the distance. The port town was pretty big if the lights could be seen when they were ten kilometers away…
"Are you a little kid? Why are you so excited?" Seris asked.
"You acted in the same way on the First time you traveled with me," Sauros said.
"That can't be true. I was calm and composed as always," Seris said. "I still remember that."
"Yes… A twelve years old tomboy is the perfect example of a composed kid," Sauros said.
"Come to think of it. You are planning to challenge me, right?" Aion asked. "Let's get this over with and then head to the port."
"I admit that you are strong and skilled, but that arrogance will cost you one day," Seris said. "I am not insane enough to make so much noise in enemy territory."
"Enemy Territory?" Aion asked while frowning.
"It is a long story… let's just say that we have had our fair share of problems here," Sauros said. "Still, we need to pass through here often to get some information. By the way, this country is east of the place we met before. One thousand kilometers further east and beyond those mountains."
So they truly went in that direction… in any case, that was fine. That would give Aion a good idea of how the map of that world would be. After a while, they jumped from the ship, and then Sauros and Seris took some rings from their backpacks and then equipped them. The color of their eyes and hair changed and the shape of their faces as well… that was some interesting magic.
"Since it is night, you don't have to worry about your eyes," Sauros said. "We are only here to get some reports and the supplies that are already ready for us to carry."
Aion could guess that using those rings, they managed to infiltrate one of their own in the city to help with the gathering of information. They probably had others all over the world… Aion will try to use his magic in the future to find people using those magic items.
"Well, that is a pity…" Aion said. "I guess I will have to rely on you to learn more about this country, then."
"I thought that you would be in a hurry after learning how long this job will take, but it seems you want to take it easy," Seris said. "You might not want to be a tourist here because the people here are really cautious of strangers. During the wars in the past, when they were suspected of being spies, they captured and tortured pretty much all of those who weren't born in the port. Thousands of people were tortured and killed out of fear."
"Who is the lunatic who gave that order?" Aion asked.
"The council gave, since the foundation of this country, a council of merchants ruling over it; the members change all the time since only the richest and most influential can be part of the council," Sauros explained. "Regardless, we need to get going."
Things have already taken a dark turn regarding Aion's world exploration. Still, that only confirmed what he already knew… a lot of bloody things happen in that world and pretty often. The journey of the god and goddess, the destruction of the Mileris kingdom, the betrayal of the bandits' country against the Zaera kingdom…
While they were moving, Aion kept thinking about that… even after three thousand years and many sacrifices on the part of the god and goddess. Things were still the same. Instead of sad, that was just depressing.
Along the way, Aion learned that in that country, people commercialized all kinds of things in the open. Slaves, animals, monsters… their regulations were as brand as they could be…
"They sell a lot of things to other countries. Most of those are slaves," Seris said while showing an annoyed expression. "They even have something like a slaves farm…"
That was rather disturbing, but Aion wasn't surprising considering what he already saw in that world. Since that country had a past of being ruled by greedy people who had no restraints, such things became common. Those who weren't like that had a hard time rising in their ranks. So, the country continued like that…
Aside from that, the country was also pretty known for having the best mercenaries in the world… Naturally, they were born slaves who had been trained for two decades and couldn't think for themselves and followed the orders of their masters no matter what. After hearing a few more things, Aion lost the interest of even hearing the name of the country. In his head, he decided to call it: AMDL, which stands for: assholes merchants dreamland.
After two hours, they reached the port city, and as expected, it was big. It didn't have walls, but one could see many guards patrolling around and a long line of travelers…
"This isn't good… Something happened there," Sauros said.
"We can use Aion's magic to enter the city and leave as well," Seris said. "However, I have a feeling that this might be some bad news for us."
"That is rather random…" Aion said.
"As we said before, this country has a bad history with spies, and they never stop looking for them," Seris said. "The population is motivated to report anyone that looks suspicious… You can imagine what happens when someone makes a mistake here."
If they had a single informant, then things wouldn't be that problematic, but in the end, it would be hard for a single person to gather Intel in a country like that…
