Zhenyi walked towards Long Jie who was still standing at the same place where she saw him before. The frown on his forehead was proof that he was unhappy. Well, he was unhappy all the time what can she do? Instinctively, she moved forward and caressed the frown on his forehead with her hand.
He grabbed her arm and fired the first question instantly, " What were you talking about?"
She looked into his gray eyes. They were shining under the moonlight like a luminous sapphire. She noticed the flickers of green in those gray eyes caused by the reflection of the moonlight. Just how beautiful were his eyes?
Long Jie looked at his silent wife who was ogling him. She could be as silent as a ghost whenever she wanted to.
After what seemed like an eternity she graced him with an answer which was worse than her silence, "You men have your secrets and us women have ours."
Long Jie's grip on her arm tighten as he heard her metaphoric answer and asked again in a furious yet low tone, "What were you talking with, my Grandmother? "
He was truly a typhoon no one knew when he turned north to south or from clockwise direction to anti-clockwise direction. His mood swings were worse than women on menstruation. Heck, at least women had a reason for their terrible temper but he, he just was an asshole. "None of your business, Your Majesty."
"I saw the coin, Zhenyi, " He said in a tight voice.
Zhenyi's eyes soften when she heard him but she hardened her heart because he didn't deserve sweet Zhenyi.
"So?" She raised a brow and asked again.
Long Jie's jaw tightened at her nonchalant attitude. Did she not know how much she was hurting him. "I know what it means."
"Still none of your business." Zhenyi rolled her eyes.
He took a step closer and put her arms around his neck and softly whispered, "Zhenyi?"
He was not playing fair. He never did. If he couldn't answer her question, he should understand in return that she couldn't either. But he was a demanding asshole and always get what he demanded.
She looked into his eyes. She thought of lying but Zhenyi was not a woman to break her words. She promised him honestly and transparency and she would give him.
"It is a secret." She said."Between two women."
"But I want to know, " He softly spoke. His voice sound of hurt, ache, and desperation.
She studied his face. "Why do you have to know about it? You do not tell me everything."
For few minutes no one spoke. The sound of their breathing was the only sound they could hear.
He caressed her eyes with the pad of his thumb, then traced the line of her nose, and lastly outlined the shape of her lips. She had closed her eyes and was breathing heavily as if expecting more.
" You are going to leave me? " He suddenly asked.
Zhenyi opened her eyes and stared at him. She just stared at him. She didn't know from where this stupid thought came to his extra stupid mind.
Her grip on the locket tightened and she surprised herself by answering the ridiculous question. "Maybe or maybe not."
His gaze hardened and his hold on her tighten. "Tell me clearly, are you or not?"
She looked into his eyes almost daring him as to what he could do about it. "If I did?"
"Yes or no?"He asked again.
He pulled her even closer and rested his head on her shoulder. He breathed her scent to calm the turmoil inside him.
"If that's a yes, tell me before you do and I will give you the knife to carve my heart out." He said in almost a whisper.
"The heart you claim doesn't exist," Zhenyi whispered back.
He pulled her out of his arms and took her hand and kept it on the left side of his chest apparently where the heart is located.
" It still doesn't. But whenever you are close, this organ made up of steel starts beating. It is all your doing." He said the words so nonchalantly, but with so much weight, she suddenly felt tired to the bone.
Zhenyi didn't know how to rebuke his words. His claims were so heavy but his actions frail as a leaf. No matter how much she tried to forget the words he uttered in the morning she just couldn't.
Even when she knew he spoke it to infuriate her because the angry Zhenyi was easy to speak to and deal with than the normal one. But he just couldn't infuriate her whenever he wished and get away with it.
Words are lethal. And his words, they were even more deadly to her. It pierced her heart like a blade. It held the power to crush her. He had the power to make her heart bleed merely with her words.
Zhenyi was always a realistic woman. She was aware of the changes in her behaviour towards him. It was out of her hands to control.
What she wanted to feel for him and what she felt for him were completely at odds.
"You tell me, I carry the power to kill you but on the other hand, you kill my trust in you, Jie." She said, ache lacing his soft voice.
"Anything but not that, please." He almost pleaded. He just wanted to enjoy this particular moment. He wanted to enjoy every moment he could get with the woman in his arm. He was capable enough of giving her everything except the key to his past. And he realized he didn't need to give her anything but a reason to stay with him.
"Anything but not that, "Zhenyi repeated.
"Yes, anything." He nodded.
"Okay." She said. She had accepted the fact that he was constant in her life, his past, dirty or clean, bad or good didn't matter to her just like it shouldn't matter to him in the first place.
"Okay? " He asked her skepticism.
"Okay." She smiled.
He kissed her temple and picked her in his arms. It was time to go home and spend the night making love to his beautiful wife.
