Humans are weird creatures. We always try to protect the people we love. Sam was also trying to protect his mother by not telling her about his accident or it was what he thought. This was not the first time he was hurt in the mission, but it was certainly the first time that he was very near to kiss the sweetie pie called death. And Zhenyi was not allowed to inform his parents until he said so. Weird rules of friendship!
"How is she?" Sam asked in a solemn tone after some time. His childish and easy aura transformed into something deadlier and serious.
'Whoever hurt her, count your days because they won't be alive to lead this precious life after hurting Zhenyi. '
"Not very well. She has been under constant observation. The doctor says if she wakes up within the next forty-eight hours, the complexities of her case can be avoided but if not, her life might be in danger again," Ming Jia told her son. "I can't bear to see her in this condition. And it hurts knowing that we can't do anything to ease her pain and suffering."
Sam nodded. "How is Uncle Chen? And where is he?"
"He has been holding up fine, or that's what he is trying to show us, but you know nothing slides your eyes when the person who is suffering is your own family. You know how he has been, it is very difficult to decipher what goes on in his mind and he never really shares his emotions. He has been like this for as long as I can remember. He may keep smiling but only a few know about the turmoil behind his easy smiles. Only Zhenyi and Ryuu can untangle his real emotions apart from your Godmother. "
"He is here?" Sam asked in a whisper as he glanced here and there and then at his mother.
"Who?" Ming Jia furrowed her brows in confusion.
" The devil. Who else." Sam replied, rolling his eyes.
"Sam!" Ming Jia scolded him. " Stop calling him names. He is better than you at least he doesn't cause worry for his father as you do."
Sam scoffed. 'Only if you know the things he is capable enough of doing, then I will ask you who worries whom more.'
Not that he would ever be able to say these words to Ryuu directly. And he didn't fear Ryuu at all, right?
"Mom, I'll be back. I will see her first," said Sam. "You are staying here?"
Ming Jia nodded. "When we came to China for Zhenyi's wedding we didn't know that your grandfather's health was deteriorating and when we know about it, we just can't leave the country because I know that if I left it then, I wouldn't be coming back. So, brother Yichen asked us to stay with him here if we don't wish to live at Ming residence but we declined as we already had a villa in the city, but now that Zhenyi is sick I think we should stay here for a few days. We are their only family and I don't think we can leave them alone in this time of distress. "
Inside Zhenyi's room.
Sam entered the room and his gaze fell on the two nurses and a doctor checking her vitals. The beeping sound of the machine didn't escape his ears. He had been too used to this hospital equipment and doctors that he didn't seem as affected as anyone else who had entered the room, but it was only till his gaze didn't dart towards the patience spread out on the gigantic bed.
His breath sucked in his throat as he saw her. This was his best friend? He almost couldn't believe it. He was too afraid to touch her. He now understood what his mom meant when she said it hurt to see her like this.
He walked towards her slowly and sluggishly.
He heaved out a long-suffering sigh when he reached her.
"How are you?" He asked the sleeping figure. But only if the sleeping Zhenyi could wake up and answer his question.
"Ugh!" He hit his head and said. "How can you answer when you are sleeping?"
He tried to lighten the tense surrounding but it didn't work. He sighed out.
"I think now I feel how you must have felt when I was sleeping (in a coma) and didn't want to wake up soon," he again said to the quiet woman. "Well, don't expect me to fill buckets full of tears for you. I ain't doing that for you!"
The doctor didn't glance at him as if he was crazy talking to her especially when he knew that they wouldn't be getting replies anytime soon. They were used to it. Since the morning, one or the other person was coming to see her. They would talk to her for a few minutes and then leave. It was more like a routine for doctors to ignore what the patient's family was talking to her.
Then again, they could leave the room to give them some privacy but he dared not to. The scene from yesterday was still embedded in their minds when the doctor who left the patient for a few minutes was punished.
Sigh. The family was scary and most of all, their boss.
"Or are you just jealous that I get to enjoy the lavish hospital life for a month and now you want it too," Sam said sarcastically.
Sensing that he wouldn't be getting a reply from her and she wouldn't berate him either so he went to insult her husband. "And where is that husband of yours? Isn't he supposed to be by your side and take care of you? Such an unreliable man you have married! Well, what can we expect from him! Do you want me to shoot him? Come one, tell me I know you are tempted."
"Thank your God that she is not awake yet otherwise she would have sent you to the hospital again," came a raspy voice and Sam tilted his head to find the owner of the voice.
The hair on his arms and legs stood up as he heard the voice and his eyes almost popped out when the figure graced his vision.
