Alcina smiled and placed the phone on the table again. She breathed out a sigh of relief.
"Who was on the call?" Zhenyi asked her casually.
"Your husband!"
"What?!" Zhenyi stood up abruptly with wide eyes. Alcina muffled a laugh seeing Xin Zhenyi getting sober within a second.
Zhenyi shoved the empty alcohol bottles towards Alcina and said," Remember you were the one who emptied all of these bottles. I've nothing to do with it." She glanced at the indifferent Alcina, and added," I'm Xin Zhenyi. You don't want to go against me. Do you get it?"
Long Jie, who was standing on the door oblivious to the ladies, looked amused at his drunk wife's threat. Initially, he planned to play oblivious of Zhenyi's location, and when he called her to ask about her whereabouts, he was already outside the club. But much to his trouble, another woman picked up his wife's phone, and after failing to keep his fears at bay, he appeared to get her without having any second thoughts.
But who would have thought that he would see his wife dumping the blame on someone else?
"I get it. You're Xin Zhenyi, and I shouldn't mess with a big shot like you," Alcina said, trying to act scared though she was laughing inside.
"What did my Jie tell you?" Zhenyi asked her with narrowed eyes. "And why did you talk to him? Don't you know it's sinful to talk to someone else's husband especially when you have your man?"
Of course, even drunk Zhenyi could never stop the possessiveness leaking out of her when it came to her Jie.
"My man is dead, and even the grass on his grave is as tall as my five years old child."
As Zhenyi was about to retort, her phone rang again.
"You're Jie is calling his Zhenyi again," Alcina said.
Zhenyi blinked. "Hell--"
"Come outside. I'm waiting for you." With this said, he hung up the call.
"Did you snitch on me?" Zhenyi glared at her while pointing her finger. She could sense he was angry. Instead of feeling joy, she was actually scared.
Alcina shrugged her shoulders." Just told him how his wife is drowning her sorrows in a bottle of whiskey."
"You better pray that he doesn't divorce me or else I will make your life hell," Zhenyi said, heading towards the exit.
"What an unreliable woman!" Alcina muttered to herself.
"And pay the bill before you leave. Apparently, the boss of this place doesn't like to give away freebies," Zhenyi's head appeared on the door again.
"What a miser!"
_____
As Zhenyi hurriedly came out, she found her husband leaning against the car, waiting for her. The first thought that came to her mind was to bury her head in his chest and cry her heart out. But she didn't know how to cry or how to pour her heart out without making him worry. So, she paused at the distance, drinking his image to etch it in her heart forever.
With his shirt sleeves rolled up, she could see his strong arms. She wanted to wrap his strong arms around her waist. Since he wasn't wearing a tie and the first couple of buttons of his shirt were undone, he looked like an incarnation of a Greek God.
And finally, his eyes met hers. He gave her what seemed like a smile of longing and Zhenyi had a hard time keeping her tears at bay.
She ran and crashed into his embrace. After what felt like an eternity, they broke the hug, and Zhenyi looked into his eyes.
Long Jie swiveled abruptly, taking Zhenyi by shock. She was now trapped between the car and Long Jie's warm body. He had his hands on both of her shoulders, and his intense gaze was enough to undo Zhenyi.
Now his hands were caressing her face gently, and she was breathing heavily.
"Do you know what's the coldest place in the world?" Long Jie whispered in her ear.
Zhenyi shook her head.
"Anywhere without you is cold and aching," Long Jie said.
"Then, why do you leave me there alone?" Zhenyi asked him, her eyes were still boring into his.
"Because I want to keep you safe," Long Jie said.
Zhenyi touched his face with her fingers tenderly and said," I'm still dreaming, right? It's again the long torturous dream where I see you with me always, but whenever I open my eyes, you're never with me. Whatever I saw and heard today is a dream and there is no reality in it, right?"
"I'm afraid it's not a dream, Cat eyes," Long Jie said, kissing the back of her hand. "I came back to you. I will always come back to you no matter how far I go. It's my promise to you."
"Let's go home," Long Jie said, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. He opened the door of the car for her.
"Where is the driver?" Zhenyi asked as she settled inside.
He leaned over to help her to put seatbelt but not before dropping a kiss on her forehead.
"You're going to be the death of me," Long Jie said, suddenly he was reminded of what she did." The stunt you pulled today, do you know how dangerous it was?"
Zhenyi pressed her lips. "I'm sorry."
"Are you really?" Long Jie threw her a dirty look.
No one spoke for the rest of the journey. When they reached the Long mansion, Long Jie first got out of the car and then opened the door for Zhenyi.
"Come out," he told her.
"You're mad at me," Zhenyi whispered while avoiding eye contact. She got out of the car.
"No, Zhenyi. I'm not mad at you," Long Jie yelled as he punched the car."I'm mad at myself. I failed you again. I thought that I will always be with you whenever you need me. But instead of telling me what's wrong, you went missing." He took a deep breath and clenched his hands to curb his anger. "Do you know how scared I was? I thought I lost you again. Don't you dare do something like this again or..."
He pulled her in his arms, and inhaled her intoxicating scent. Didn't she know what she meant to him? He had seen her crying in his embrace. And it hurt him to see her crying. But what could he do other than blaming himself when she wouldn't share her burden with him?
