Assistant Qin wiped away his sweat nervously. Lately, he hadn’t been as dedicated to the company due to his relationship and frequent half-day leaves.
It seemed like his employer was taking matters into his own hands, which might mean that Assistant Qin wasn’t needed anymore.
Although he was a key figure in the company, his focus was mainly on managing the daily lives of the Li family, unlike Secretary Han, whose responsibilities were more centered around company affairs.
“No. It’s only for matters concerning Madam. Mr. Li wants to handle those personally. Other matters are still under our jurisdiction, so don’t overthink it.” Secretary Han patted Assistant Qin on the shoulder. “The boss is just deeply involved in Madam’s affairs.”
Secretary Han’s words made sense, and Assistant Qin felt better. “You’re right. I need to worry more about the young masters instead.”
After they left the office, Li Yanchen sat there in a daze for a while.
He seemed like a changed person, with family and love taking up more and more space in his heart. He once again contemplated retirement, but on second thought, he dismissed it. If he retired this early, he would be announcing to the world that he was getting old.
The major news headlines would surely rush to report it.
After a short rest, Li Yanchen decided he needed to continue working hard to make more money.
At Yun Xi High School, Li Zexin finished school before four o’clock, which meant he could go home early. He and his roommate cheered.
Preserved Egg and the others joined in for a meal.
Chubby Jiang said, “Today, Sister Lin invited us!”
Big Mouth was going on about it a day ahead and boasting to his friends in the neighboring dormitory. They hadn’t even left, but the others were crowding around Li Zexin as though they wanted to follow along.
Lin Wan became famous after the parent-teacher meeting.
The four of them left the school amidst envious glances.
On the way, Li Zexin smiled to himself. He had quite a few friends at school before, but after Lin Wan became famous, he had even more friends. He had become one of the most popular figures at school.
Some classmates even affectionately referred to him as “Brother Xin.” In his heart, Li Zexin had already puffed up with pride, but he still appeared humble on the surface. He told everyone humbly that Lin Wan was just an ordinary person.
Preserved Egg had a small gift in his pocket for Lin Wan.
At the entrance to the Li family’s courtyard, Li Zekai had brought over a small stool and was sitting there. He was waiting for his brother to get back home. He had a package of hairpins and wanted to show off.
When Li Zexin saw his little brother sitting at the entrance, he realized that his little brother’s holidays had already started.
“Brother Xinxin!” Li Zekai ran to Li Zexin.
“Are you on break?” The hug took Li Zexin by surprise. “It’s been a few days since I last saw you, and you’ve gotten so much stronger. That hurt.”
Li Zekai took out a hairpin. “I think it’s probably because of this. I got a bit too excited.” He opened the bag of hairpins.
Preserved Egg put the thing he was clutching back into his pocket. When he saw the sparkling hair pins that Li Zekai took out, he felt ashamed of his own gift.
“What’s this?” Li Zexin was puzzled.
“It’s a gift I’m giving to Auntie Lin. I bought it this afternoon. She really liked it.
It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“They’re all nice. Can you let me go in now? It’s chilly standing at the door.” “Okay.” Li Zekai put away the bag.
Auntie Huang didn’t know that Li Zexin got off school early. Dinner wasn’t ready yet, and Lin Wan volunteered to help cook a couple of dishes.
Auntie Huang hesitated and then agreed. She taught Lin Wan how to make soup.
The kids gathered in the courtyard to play. Preserved Egg walked back and forth with a heavy heart.
Li Zexin looked at his roommate. “Preserved Egg, what are you doing?”
The idea to buy the hairpins was from his cousin. During the parent- teacher meeting, his cousin found out from somewhere that Lin Wan was actually Li Zexin’s stepmother and came up with the idea of giving her hairpins. She had given him one of her hair pins for Preserved Egg to give to Lin Wan.
Preserved Egg had asked if they had dandruff on them, but his cousin had reassured him that they did not.
This hairpin was her favorite, and despite its simple appearance, it contained a small pearl hidden within the white shell. When his cousin had bought it, the seller had told her that the pearl was naturally formed in the sea.
Preserved Egg couldn’t appreciate the beauty of the hairpins, but the story his cousin told was captivating. However, when he saw the pile of sparkling hairpins that Li Zekai had bought, he felt that his hairpin was plain and boring. “I am just walking around, so I can eat more at dinner,” Preserved Egg said as an excuse.
“Preserved Egg, you don’t have to worry so much. Don’t freak out now.”
“Yeah. Auntie Huang went grocery shopping today. It should be enough for all of us,” said Li Zexin. “Just make sure not to overeat. Otherwise, you will get a stomachache. ”
“Xinxin, my cousin really admires Sister Lin. If she sent a gift, would Sister Lin accept it?” asked Preserved Egg.
“She probably wouldn’t. Ms. Lin is a person of principles.”
“Ah?” Preserved Egg’s heart sank. Now, he was even more reluctant than before to give the hairpin. But he couldn’t return it to his cousin either. He didn’t know what to do.
Li Zexin suddenly realized something.
“Preserved Egg, did you prepare a gift for Ms. Lin?”
“You prepared a gift? What is it?” Chubby Jiang asked curiously.
“Did your cousin ask you to deliver a gift?” Big Mouth asked. Preserved Egg’s hands were still in his pockets. He looked conflicted.
“What’s wrong?” Li Zexin asked.
“It’s nothing. If my cousin wants me to help her deliver a gift to Ms. Lin and if it happens to be cheap and not very valuable, will Ms. Lin accept it? It would mean a lot to my cousin.”
“Why don’t you just ask Ms. Lin yourself?” Chubby Jiang pointed to the kitchen.
“True, I’ll ask her later.”
In the kitchen, under Auntie Huang’s guidance, Lin Wan finished preparing the soup. She claimed she made it, but she only supervised the fire and occasionally stirred the soup.
An hour later, the meal was served, and Auntie Huang called the children to eat.
Preserved Egg’s face turned red. It was Chubby Jiang who finally helped him voice his question.
The group held their breath and waited for Lin Wan’s answer.
Lin Wan had never received gifts from fans before, although she had received postcards and letters. She looked serious. “If it isn’t something expensive, it’s fine. But if it costs a lot of money, I would feel bad accepting it. Please don’t put me in a difficult position.”
Preserved Egg took out the hairpin. “This didn’t cost much. It’s secondhand. My cousin took it off her hair..”
