“Come over here…”
“We have a friend in the church, but because of an accident, she got injured and she’s been bedridden ever since…”
The boy and Raimu continued holding my hands and dragged me towards the church in town. In the capital, there are about 3 churches or so, and this is one of them. The one that they took me to is the oldest church in town, it’s been around since the founding of the empire.
“And you say that your friend is bedridden somewhere in here?”
“Yeah. Let’s hurry!”
In a hurry, the boy and Raimu entered the courtyard where the church is located. However, they didn’t go into the church itself, they passed through a small path on the corner of the church.
I don’t think I’ve ever been through a path like this…
By the church, there was yet another building. This one seemed pretty old as well, you could see cracks in the building here and there. Without hesitation, the boy and Raimu entered the old building.
“We’re back, Sister. We’ve bought someone with us.”
“She’s going to help Meryl.”
“Welcome back, Raimu, Kaede.”
The one who greeted us was an elderly woman.
That sister was staring at me with a troubled expression.
“I am so sorry about all of this. I didn’t think they would bring someone all the way over here… Please, come in.”
I did as the Sister said and stepped into the old building.
And so, she led me to some sort of room for meetings.
This place looks pretty old. The furniture in this room is pretty high-quality, but you can certainly feel its age just by looking at it. That being said, everything here has been taken care of pretty well. While I can’t deny that the room feels like it’s been around forever, it certainly has been taken care of well.
“Please, sit down.”
“Pardon my intrusion.”
As I sit down on the sofa, another Sister came in and brought some tea. But this Sister was rather elderly as well.
“Uhm… So who’s Meryl?”
“I am so sorry about all of this. It’s just something those kids made up. You don’t have to worry about it.”
The Sister said with a melancholic smile. I wonder if something happened.
“I heard that there was some sort of accident and that a child has been in bed since then.”
“I see, so that’s what they said, huh. It can’t really be helped…”
She said while smiling gently.
“Well, it’s true. There was an accident, and a young girl has been bedridden since. But, we don’t have any money to even have someone just examine her. As you can see, this is the oldest church in the capital. Everyone goes to the newer churches nowadays, and the contributions we get is only just enough to keep these children fed every day. We don’t even have the money to have a doctor come over here. So, I really do have to apologize for all the trouble these kids brought to you. You came all the way over here, but please go back home. Even if you treat Meryl, we don’t have the money to pay for your services.”
