Chapter 68

Kate opened her mouth and then closed it again.

She understood.

The changes that occurred in the entire world had caused a lot of people to be desperate enough to do anything. Tricking other people seemed to be something that they were willing to do in order to be able to gain anything that could prolong their lives.

Because they couldn’t return.

Too many beasts out there.

Even if they tried, they would only end up in the stomach of so many mutated beasts that had gone rampart.

“Let’s go.” Kyle glanced at the mini market nearby and then waved to Jake. They had more than enough supplies as of now, so they didn’t have to take what belonged to others. Anyway, there will be more scavengers in the future and the limited supplies within that mini market should be enough for them.

There was no need for them to take everything.

Other people might need those more than them.

.....

“Ok.”

The woman looked a bit at loss but she didn’t stop them. After all, she was only trying to survive in this place. After being unable to go anywhere, the only thing she could do was to trick people.

For those who pitied her, she had already taken advantage of them a lot.

She left.

On the other hand, Kyle and Jake returned to the car.

“Meow.”

Kate felt down.

Kyle looked at the cat in his arm and patted her. “I know that you feel pity. Being kind is good, but a lot of people are not worthy of your kindness.”

“Meow.”

“Tsk, tsk, it just showed what humans can do when they’re desperate enough. But it’s good that she’s not using any real child to beg for food.” Jake shook his head.

“There should be more people there who had been occupying the market.” Kyle entered the car. “There’s no need to pay attention to them. Everyone had their own fate and it’s impossible for you to change everyone’s fate even though you want it.”

Jake clicked his tongue. “No wonder that you’re being kicked from the military with your heartless attitude.”

Kyle glanced at Jake.

Jake wisely shut his mouth.

Kate blinked her big eyes and looked at Kyle. But she also knew that Kyle’s way of doing things wouldn’t suit those who were in the military. Because Kyle was not a person who could care for other people so much.

In fact, he would only care for himself and those around him more than strangers.

A soldier would have to protect their nation, which meant that they had to put their nation’s interest and the people’s safety far above their own.

‘Well, I’m not that caring either.’

Kate curled up her body inside Kyle’s jacket. In fact, Kate even felt that she was closer to being cold hearted and selfish rather than kindhearted and caring. It was something that she herself knew but she didn’t know how to change.

She didn’t want to change either.

Because if she was being too kind, she would be the one who ended up getting hurt by others.

...

Night

They still didn’t manage to reach City B because the number of insects increased as they got closer to City B. It seemed that these insects were attracted to the cities around them no matter which one it is.

This made Jake frowned.

“I can’t understand why these ants would like to go to the city so much.”

“We’ll be staying here for the night. Cast a metal shield to protect all of us, Jake.” Kyle pointed at the slightly open area at the side.

Jake nodded and parked the car before using the metal to form a protective layer. He stretched his body when he was done.

“It seems that the supposedly short journey had become extremely long. There are a lot of insects outside...” Jake frowned.

If he didn’t pay attention to the metal cover, it wouldn’t last long.

“I’ll use earth to reinforce it.” Kate’s father waved his hand and used the earth around them to form a shield too. This will block these insects from approaching them even if it was only a little bit.

“Swarm.” Dylan frowned.

“Damn, if there’s a swarm, I wouldn’t be able to hold on.” Jake was stunned. The insects they met so far were mostly just scattered insects who attacked randomly. Since that was the case, it was relatively easy to deal with them.

But if it was swarm, it would be a different case altogether.

“Open the shield a bit so that we can see outside.” Kyle frowned. He waved his hand and flames spread outside the shield, burning everything on its path.

“Meow~.”

Kate saw that she could see the world outside now and conveniently pulled those white dots, making the insects dying on by one and dropped to the ground.
