Chapter 22
Song Luokui didn't know why he was telling her this, so she just responded with an "uh huh" and didn't say anything else. The silence would feel awkward if she didn't speak, so Song Luokui said: "The business school seems pretty far from the literature department."
Chi Yu: "Yeah, it's a bit far." Actually it was only two kilometers, not far at all if driving or riding a bike.
As they walked, there was a stall on the roadside selling sugar figures, with a sign that read 10 yuan each. Song Luokui glanced at it twice, and Chi Yu beside her suddenly walked over saying, "I'd like one."
Owner: "What would you like?"
Chi Yu looked towards Song Luokui: "What would you like?"
Song Luokui's eyes widened in surprise. "Huh? You're buying one for me?"
Chi Yu didn't reply, but his intention was obvious. Song Luokui, worried that the owner was getting impatient, immediately said: "Just make a sunflower."
"Sure!"
The owner quickly made one and Chi Yu handed over 10 yuan. Song Luokui held the sunflower-shaped sugar figure, slightly stunned as she looked up at Chi Yu.
Today Chi Yu was wearing a long black coat with a full suit underneath, his hair combed up to reveal a smooth forehead. He was a full head taller than her 1.65 meters; Chi Yu was probably around 1.85 meters.
His side profile had perfectly smooth lines, thick earlobes, and surprisingly pierced ears, although he wasn't wearing any earrings.
Chi Yu suddenly turned his head to look straight at her, and Song Luokui's heart jumped as she immediately turned her head saying, "Let's get going." She took off walking as she said this.
In just two long steps Chi Yu caught up with her. Sensing that passersby kept glancing at Chi Yu when they walked by, Song Luokui immediately stopped and said, "Let's head back."
Chi Yu had no objections. The two returned to the car parked near the entrance of the compound. Song Luokui got out of the car, then Chi Yu left to drive somewhere else.
Song Luokui was still holding the sugar figure as she walked into the compound. The guard at the entrance glanced between her and the now distant familiar car, a gossipy gleam in his eyes.
...
"Song Hua is also involved in that plot of land in the north of town, and it seems they're confident they'll get it," Chen Nan said to Chi Yu.
Chi Yu was fiddling with a piece of candy in his hand without responding. Chen Nan wondered what was so fun about playing with candy. The packaging did look cute, could the boss be looking to break into the candy business?
Chi Yu clasped the candy in his palm. "Let that plot of land in the north of town go, and get the Hui City project instead."
Chen Nan was shocked. "Huh? You're letting it go?"
Aunt Gui said: "What do you mean nothing else? Miss can go out and play with friends like Miss Xi Yue. You can also practice piano or calligraphy, or watch TV even."
Song Luokui: "Ah I don't feel like doing any of that today. I want to get some exercise. Don't worry, I'll just wipe these vases."
"Alright Miss, just slowly wipe those vases. Auntie can handle the rest."
"Okay."
Despite what she said, in the end she still helped mop floors and even took the trash out, "I'm going to the shop to buy snacks, I'll throw out the trash on the way."
Aunt Gui: "Then let Auntie give you some money to get plenty of tasty stuff. Remember not to go off with strangers!"
Song Luokui laughed. "I know, I have money. Be right back!" Aunt Gui was treating her like a little kid.
After dumping the trash bag in the bin, she had told Aunt Gui she was going to the shop, so Song Luokui still walked over, planning to just buy some milk.
The compound's little shop was near where she used to play in the sandpit when small. There were also some kids from the compound there who greeted her one by one upon seeing her.
"Kui Kui sister!"
"Kui Kui sister!"
"Kui Kui sister, I'll buy whatever you want!"
"Go away, I have more money. I'll buy for Kui Kui sister!"
Because she was pretty, the compound kids quite liked her.
Song Luokui chuckled and patted one little girl's head. "No need guys, Kui Kui sister has money. What do you want to eat? Kui Kui sister will buy some for you."
"I want candy!"
"Me too!"
Song Luokui said: "Sure, but just one piece each. And you have to brush your teeth when you get home, otherwise your teeth will all fall out and you won't look pretty anymore!"
"We know!"
Song Luokui bought a pack of candy, giving one piece to each kid while putting the rest in her pocket to bring home. Holding the milk bottle in one hand and pockets full of candy, she prepared to head back.
But she had barely walked out of the shop when a car suddenly pulled up beside her.
