Chapter 23 - Dead Infant in the Basement
"What do you mean!" I followed behind Shen Ta after realising that I was hopeless. He turned his head to look at me and sighed heavily, "Ah, let's go investigate what you've said!"
I replied with an 'oh' in a daze. I couldn't help but think to myself, 'Can this be considered as a small improvement?'
I followed Shen Ta and walked forward. I felt like I was like a pheasant that followed behind Chen Haonan in the ancient times. Even my walking posture couldn't help but start up.
At that moment, a doctor came up to me. Perhaps the fantasy in my head had been shattered, but I quickly shriveled down and moved aside, ready to make way for him.
However, it was clear that Shen Tuo did not think this way.
Just as the doctor was about to pass by him, Shen Tuo suddenly made a move and grabbed onto the doctor's collar.
"Where is the dean's office?"
I kept my eyes on the doctor's face, so I could clearly see the change in his expression. He was clearly frightened and frowned, as if he was about to lose his temper. It was unknown if it was because he felt that Shen Tuo had an unusually large amount of strength in his hands, or because he was scared by Shen Tuo's fiendish look, but the doctor's expression softened, and he pretended to be calm as he pointed the way for us.
Those who knew could understand the anxiety in Shen Tuo's heart. Those who didn't know would think that this guy was a bandit, but he didn't have the appearance of a police officer.
When we reached the door of the dean's office, there was no sound at all from inside. Perhaps it was for convenience's sake, but at the same time that Shen Tuo kicked open the door, he casually took out his ID. The dean, who was about to stand up and curse, immediately put on a smile.
With the support of our identity, we easily found out where this hospital was dealing with dead babies.
It turned out that there were many stillbirths in every hospital every day. Some were due to childbirth difficulties, while most were due to unwanted pregnancies. In the end, they had to come to the hospital to give birth. According to the "Mediterranean" dean, when some people came to give birth, the baby was already in shape.
I couldn't help but secretly touch my belly. It was just that I couldn't feel the existence of the child in my stomach at all right now. Strangely, I felt a sense of loss.
I felt an indescribable sense of guilt at the thought that I had actually thought of beating him up.
Shen Tuo acted like a gangster as he dragged the dean all the way to the basement.
"Mediterranean" said, this was once just an abandoned storage room, later, because of his own whim, it was reused. However, I looked around me. This kind of environment could only be used to store these unprocessed infant corpses.
On the way here, Shen Ta told me that dead infants, especially those who had been artificially aborted, carried an extremely heavy amount of resentment, and these grievances were coincidentally the most effective "tonics" for resentments like Zhao Xue. If I had the help of these grievances, Zhao Xue's strength would be able to advance by leaps and bounds in a short period of time.
I know that Shen Tuo means that if we can't get rid of Zhao Xue, once she becomes strong beyond Shen Tuo's capabilities, the consequences will be unthinkable.
The basement was sealed behind a metal door about two meters high, painted silver. But perhaps it had been corroding for too long, the paint had begun to peel off, curling away from the iron, which was stained red with rust.
However, the lock on the door was brand-new. This implied that the basement had just been opened not long ago.
I sighed to myself. To think that we would encounter such a coincidence. Our luck must be really good to buy a lottery ticket.
We stood in front of the door, and the Mediterranean reluctantly stepped forward and fished out the key. It took them a long time to open the door. It could be seen that this old man had never been here before. It's been hard on us today, such a nurturing and privileged dean.
"Mediterranean" pushed open the metal door with some effort. Seeing that there was still no movement from Shen Tuo, I couldn't follow him. The dean could only walk in front and lead the way.
However, before I could move forward, this old man suddenly ran out with one hand covering his mouth as he bent down to escape. He ran all the way to a corner and supported himself against the corner of the wall before starting to vomit heavily.
I couldn't help but despise him. This dean was actually unable to even see the corpse. It was really a mystery what sort of unorthodox methods he used to get himself into his current position.
In any case, I'm still a student of the medical academy, and as a police officer for so many years, Shen Tuo is naturally accustomed to seeing all kinds of corpses. So without thinking, we looked at each other and walked in.
It wasn't until I saw the bodies of the babies with my own eyes that I began to understand what the Mediterranean was doing. Even I, who had seen innumerable organs, specimens of corpses, and even autopsies, felt a chill run down my spine.
I quietly took out two medical masks from my pocket and handed one to Shen Ta. Shen Tuo gave me a grateful look and quickly turned his head back, as though he didn't want me to discover that he was frightened.
In front of him were piles of infant corpses. Some of them were like a lump of rotten meat that had yet to take shape, while some of them had already developed heads and limbs.
These infants, who had not had time to be conscious or even open their eyes to look at the world, were now piled up in this small, dark space in an exceptionally awkward fashion. I couldn't help but blink my eyes. Only then did I feel a sharp pain in my eyes.
At this moment, I suddenly felt as if a cold breeze blew past my back …
I couldn't help but shiver and grab the corner of Shen Tuo's shirt from behind. Shen Ta was wearing a mask, so I couldn't see his expression, but his eyes were full of caution.
He must have realized that there was something else in the room besides us.
As a semi-professional, I didn't need to go up to observe that the babies were in such a state that it was impossible for them to rot naturally.
Something else must have happened to them!
Even if I think about it, I can't figure out how much suffering these innocent babies went through after they died.
At this moment, Shen Tuo suddenly opened his sleeves and looked at his watch. After which, he took off his gloves without any hesitation and shouted, "Not good! It's dark now!"
