Chapter 20: Carefree and At Ease
A while ago, Zhou Mushi felt that the human body was very fragile. Without being exposed to cold or wind, just having bad emotions could make people dizzy, nauseous, and sleepless. But now he thinks that the human body is really tough. He had a fever up to forty degrees, but it didn’t kill him.
He took a shower, slept for a while, and then found some fever-reducing medicine from Zhou Hang’s medicine box to take. After another sleep, his fever had subsided the next day.
His bones still hurt, but it was mostly due to hunger. He went to the kitchen and found some bread and eggs, made a simple sandwich and a glass of soy milk for himself. After eating, Zhou Mushi’s feeling as light as a feather and the soul is floating1
Living alone in a big house, he almost forgot everything.
Time was not important to him, and he didn’t even know what day it was. He didn’t need to follow the logic of three meals a day. Whenever he was hungry, he just found something to heat up in the fridge to eat, while the Spring Festival Gala on TV played continuously.
He sat on the soft carpet, watching TV dramas, eating spicy rolled bread with laoganma chili sauce, and pairing it with red wine. His life was so comfortable that he almost forgot everything that had happened in the past three years overnight. It was as if someone had hit him on the head, and the bruises on his body were fading away as quickly as his memories.
After experiencing certain things, people can only understand some things. He suddenly remembered some things his dad had said to him these days.
As long as he listened to him, he would support him for a lifetime, and he would never have to worry about food and clothing for the rest of his life.
He used to despise the life of eating and waiting to die, but now it seems quite good.
There are people to support him, give him money, and he doesn’t have to give anything in return. That is his own father, and he doesn’t have to worry about any hidden rules. He doesn’t know what madness possessed him back then, thinking that those were irresponsible and selfish words.
Zhou Mushi felt that he could spend a few more days in Zhou Hang’s house, and then go home and be a good son.
As his second young master, as a rich second generation, he could return to his days of spending money like water, casually buying a house, a car, and wearing brand-name clothes that cost more than some people’s annual salaries.
Zhou Mushi felt like he had suddenly fallen ill – with a very serious case of OCD.
He accidentally spilled a cup of thick yogurt on his fingers earlier, and now he’s in the bathroom, carefully cleaning each finger with disinfectant wipes.
The moist and cool sensation made his fingertips shrink unconsciously. His fingers were already cold, but he couldn’t help but wipe them with his other hand.
It was like someone was holding his hand, wiping it bit by bit for him, but there was no one around him. He was just wiping his reddened fingers over and over again.
He didn’t know how many days he had been living in the room. The curtains were closed, and not a sliver of light could penetrate. It was a cycle of eating and sleeping, and it seemed like it would never end. But he still had to go out to take out the trash.
Zhou Mushi wore a set of pajamas and took a down jacket that covered him from head to toe from Zhou Hang’s closet, put on a pair of cotton slippers, and carried the trash out.
This winter was particularly warm. He breathed in the relatively mild air, and the semi-cold wind blowing on his face made him feel more awake.
This kind of temperature was perfect for eating a guokui with pickled vegetable stuffing. If he added a cup of freshly ground unsweetened soy milk, it would be even better. Jin Yang said soy milk was good for the stomach.
End of Chapter 20
1 “觉着自己身轻如燕,灵魂飘忽” in English can be translated as “feeling as light as a feather and the soul is floating.” It expresses a feeling of being carefree, light-hearted, and having a sense of detachment from one’s surroundings. ↵
