The dome over sanctuary was doing all the work necessary in stemming the flow of the undead. In fact in the whole of ten minutes that the 10th wave had started, not a single Baneling had gotten through, not even the one Cole had shot as the Baneling air unit had been turned to ash the moment they impacted the barrier. But death had never been a thing to stop Banelings before, even though it was obvious they had some measure of consciousness.
To Cole it was obvious that perhaps there was a lot more to the intricacies of the Baneling than what he was seeing. He wouldn't lie though, these breed of undead fascinated the hell out of him. For some reason he wanted to delve in deeper, to find out more about them and see if truly he'd Tina a way to communicate with them and learn their secrets. Delarosa had been a special case as she had been able to retain a unique way of communicating due to being half corporeal and incorporeal, retaining much if not all of her prior intelligence and function.
But perhaps the Banelings and their secrets was a story for someone else, and another time. One thing was for sure though, it will come to light eventually. The wave Banelings rushing at the shield did not end, it was as if whoever was in charge thought that it would be best to just keep throwing bodies at the shield until it came down, but Cole did not think that was possible…. Was it. If he had to look at this logically then this shield should be running off some power station or something, or perhaps a massive battery... Cole did not have the details but in the end all they had to keep praying for was that the energy used in sustaining that shield is not finite.
That was when the Banelings changed tactics. Cole could see that the quality of troops that came after fifteen minutes were a little bit different than the norm. The Baneling birds that they were on had massive nodes/swellings on their throat like those of a rooster, only it was purple and bulbous and looked absolutely hideous, and then they unleashed. Loud screeches filled the air as the air units began to fire of sustained and visible sound waves that caused ripples to appeared across the surface of the dome.
The ground units, especially the massive giants or perhaps it would be better to call them goliaths. These massive Banelings that were also just as armored as the bruisers that had been a part of Delarosa's own wave, and they carried massive hammers that on one end looked like the had metallic woofers attached to it. One of them slammed it's hammer on the ground, creatinine a sound wave that travelled forwards to smash against the shield, causing even more ripples as loud booming sounds filled the environment.
The sound waves were in turn creating shockwaves, it was as if the dome itself was a massive drum and it's reverberations was traveling inward. Cole could fill every vibration down to his bones. He was worried though, because if this was how dangerous the 10th wave was, what would the 11th look like. In the end if that shield fell now, then shit was going to be tough for Sanctuary in the next wave, and Cole was not so sure he wanted Farida and Cassandra to deal with odds that were against them. Of course they were leveling almost as fast he was, but the problem now was not just in the numbers, for the first time since this event started they were now dealing with real bosses! And like every other game, a boss would always be exponentially more powerful than the player and would take a lot of efforts just to be able to bring down.
"To arms! The shield does not stop attacks from going out! If we let them bring down that shield, then we might as well just go down there and show them our necks! Fight! Fight for your fucking lives!" Cole yelled out at them as he leveled his rifle and took a shot.
It got one of the Baneling Goliaths in the eye, causing it to stumble back a few steps, but Cole was not done. In a feat of precision that shocked even himself, another Chaos bullet sliced through the air and right into the same eye socket that had just received a bullet. The Goliaths head exploded, as it's massive body crashed to the ground as Cole shifted his sights to another, this time he aimed for both eye sockets, taking out the two foremost Goliath of the ground units, bringing their massive Bodies crashing to the ground. And that was all the signal the rest of them needed as everyone, Denizen and Aspirant alike opened fire on the Banelings on the ground and in the sky.
Cole could hear the massive guns and cannons powering up as the turrets started firing rapid bursts of lasers. Goliath's were popping like pimples across the battlefield as many of the other Banelings were turned to ash too. The massive birds rained down from the sky, their bodies burning up once it came in contact with the shield. Cole did not rest for one second, [Gospel] had the ability to restore his vitality and energy from every shot that he made, making it there perfect conduit for his [Sin Eater] skill.
He was worried, but Cole at the moment was getting a slew of notifications about stat increases. Even though they were minute and small and spread out across the entirety of his stats in random allocations. Every Chaos Bullet that [Gospel] spat out was bringing back at least 70 Units Of permanent increase to his energy, for bullets that only cost 15 to make. This brought back memories of the good old days were grinding was all you could in a game to move forward, this was just the same. Grinding and farming for higher levels and stats, it was monotonous but Cole really was enjoying himself.
And everything was going well until something smashed through the shield, creating a big hole in it, before flying through the air faster than anyone would have expected to appear in front of Cole, and entire arm shoved into his chest, just below his collar bone as he looked at what he would or could only consider a final fantasy demon lord. And what was worse…. There were two of them.
"Stay Down and Perish! Worm!" it said to Cole, but Cole gurgled out some choice words of his own.
"Please…..I can do this all day!.....Wrath...DriiiiVe!"
