Episode 39 – Details of the Compensation

“Arrested… W-were their crimes that serious?” (Lewin)

“Well that’s pretty darn obvious!” (Guild Chief)

After the Guild Chief responded strongly to my statement, the receptionist leaned over and whispered something in his ear.

“I mean, that… that much is obvious. It is a good thing that you somehow managed to live through this, but normally in these sorts of situations, the probability that the client ends up dead is pretty high. The severity of their crimes will be ruled on the same level of homicide, so I think they would end up with a sentence befitting such a degree of crime.” (Guild Chief)

“So that’s how it is. It’s true that I would be dead if I made even a single misstep at that time, but I really didn’t think their punishment would be so severe. Also… you don’t have to go out of your way to speak formally with me, I really don’t mind.” (Lewin)

“…Hoh, is that so? That helps me out a ton. It’s a habit from my upbringing, so don’t mind it. I’ll talk normally so we can proceed the conversation smoothly from here.” (Guild Chief)

When I told him that he didn’t need to use polite speech to talk to me, he grinned and looked relieved. Even last time, when we were doing business with the appraisal and goods assessment, I could tell this person was not great at being formal.

“Anyway, back to the conversation. Murder… well, this was an attempted murder, and according to common sense, that’s a pretty serious crime. Rather, I’m more surprised you aren’t in an absolute fit of rage after they basically tried to get you killed.” (Guild Chief)

Was it that strange after all? After so many years in the Healer’s Guild, it was drilled into me that I was an incompetent person that always had to take responsibility for everything, so I was probably just numb to this sort of treatment. If this incident took place under the supervision of the Healer’s Guild, I was sure [White Feiler] would be getting praised for leaving me behind as a decoy and running away as they called me an incompetent bastard.

“I see. Maybe I misunderstood the severity of the situation.” (Lewin)

“Ah… to be honest, that’s gotta be the case. By the way, if by any chance you were telling any lies about this matter, you’d get arrested too, you know?”

“Yes. It’s fine because I have only told the truth regarding this matter.” (Lewin)

Probably because my reaction to this situation was too suspicious, they started getting the idea that there was the possibility that I was lying. I had to affirm that I was definitely not lying.

“It’s fine as long as you’re not lying. Then… what was the second condition?” (Guild Chief)

“The second condition is that I would like to request you to arrange for me a better party in the future. I would be in a bind if I couldn’t get another party to help me.” (Lewin)

“Nah, I think this is a matter of course, but I will certainly arrange this for you. I’ll select the most superior party I can while looking at their past quest commissions and achievements. Also, from today onwards, I’ll waive all handling fees for you. And last, in light of this time’s failure, we’ll be paying you a consolation fee and covering the full cost of this time’s quest commission.” (Guild Chief)

“You can do all that for me? Thank you so much!!” (Lewin)

“Nah, don’t mind it… Like I was saying, thanking me for this kind of situation is really kind of… strange, you know.” (Guild Chief)

The Guild Chief turned a suspicious gaze towards me. But honestly, from my point of view, I could only give him my thanks for such amazing treatment.. The only thing that would make this absolutely perfect is if I could go on another expedition with the [Azure Alliance]…

“In this matter, are you familiar with the fact that [Azure Alliance] rescued me?” (Lewin)

“Of course I know. They plundered a sh*tload of money from me…” (Guild Chief)

“Unfortunately, that ain’t possible. Their expulsion is an entirely different matter from this time’s incident. Plus… rather than sputtering out in the likes of this city, changing their base city of operations would be a lot better for their growth.” (Guild Chief)

Was the Guild Chief referring to the existence of that other party that Ahmed mentioned before? It was [Azurite], if I remember correctly. Dion said before that due to their tangle with that party, they were demoted from D-rank back down to E-rank.

“……I see. It’s unfortunate, but I understand. Thank you for your support and cooperation this time.” (Lewin)

“I apologize once again. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience. I’ll have the receptionist help you regarding the compensation for the failed quest commission. Later, when there’s an update in the situation with [White Feiler], I’ll let you know. Depending on the situation, there’s a chance you might be summoned, so please understand, Lewin.” (Guild Chief)

“I understand. Thanks for your kindness.” (Lewin)

I conveyed my thanks to the Guild Chief, who was returning to the back room. I was really surprised at the time that he was the Guild Chief, but unlike Brandon, I thought he seemed like a rather respectable Chief.
