Episode 171 – Ruler of the Skies

After parting ways with Tobias at the cafe, I went towards the monitors where the Dungeon was being displayed. The sun had already gone down, but I wanted to check on the movements of the [Azure Alliance].

Let’s just see where they are now and then head back to Ponpokotei right away.

Thinking this, I made my way to the front of the Dungeon monitor and saw that there was an even bigger crowd than yesterday. There were also some street stalls being specially set up nearby, and all kinds of alcohol and food were being sold like hotcakes.

…What is all this fuss about?

Curious as to why there was such a big commotion going on, I pushed my way through the crowd to the front of the monitors and saw that the mob was even more densely packed around the monitors showing the 40th to 50th layers than usual. Continuing to duck and weave through the crowd, I managed to get to a position where I could see the monitor. When I looked at the image on the screen, I could see a party squaring off against a large dragon.

“Hey, it’s starting!! It’s the Boss of the 49th layer, the Lesser Dragon versus the [Silver Wind Chime]!”

“Do your best, Roger!!”

“Defeat the Lesser Dragon and become a Dragon Slayer, Emil!”

“Warwick! Soak all those attacks!!”

All kinds of shouts and applause rang out to cheer for what seemed to be the members of the [Silver Wind Chime].

I see. There were so many people gathered here because the party of adventurers called [Silver Wind Chime] was challenging the Boss of the fortieth layers. This party was on an even deeper layer than the [Azure Alliance], and even though it was called ‘Lesser’, the Dragon that they were fighting was so massive that it made me cower at the sight of it through the projection.

I had only come here to check on what the [Azure Alliance] was up to, but it seemed like I was going to be able to see a good show. Getting caught up in the exciting atmosphere of the crowd, I fixed my gaze eagerly on the adventurers who were challenging the Dragon.

They had just reached the 49th layer the moment I had started watching, and both parties were still carefully eyeing each other. The Dragon that was so large that it didn’t even seem like a plausible living organism was gazing arrogantly at the adventurers, while the [Silver Wind Chime] were just holding their positions as they gazed intensely at the Dragon.

The Dragon circled up right next to them, yet they were still staring intensely at one another. The instant it looked like it was about to pass by them… a dazzling flash of light filled the screen. Squinting my eyes as I continued to watch the screen, I saw that the flash of light was actually a fireball unleashed by the Dragon.

In addition to having a huge, towering body, the Dragon also possessed a strong projectile weapon. It was truly an opponent that embodied despair, but the [Silver Wind Chime] were handling it calmly.

The man with the large shield, whom the audience called Warwick, stepped forward and used his shield to easily block the fireball. Just as the crowd was going wild over the exchange of attacks, the woman called Emil, who wielded dual blades, jumped out from behind Warwick and attacked the Dragon who was still in the middle of spitting fire.

I thought that the flow of their teamwork was great and would perfectly catch the Dragon unguarded, but… reality was not so kind. The Dragon flapped its wings, which were twice as large as its hulking body, and took off into the skies.

It had a huge body that could cause the earth to quake with every step, it could use fireballs as a powerful projectile weapon, and it could even use the skies as its main battlefield. The Dragon was truly the ruler of the skies, commanding a terrifying beauty that surpassed fear itself.

“Crap! It’s flying now!”

“Hurry up and knock it down with a Flashbang!”

As I stared blankly in fascination at the Dragon, I was jolted back to reality by the impatient shouts of the audience. From the restlessness of the crowd, it was clearly not good to let the Dragon fly in the sky.

The [Silver Wind Chime] quickly reorganized their formation. Leading the vanguard, Warwick leapt out with his shield to cover Roger, the archer and leader of the party, who fired off a Flashbang at the Lesser Dragon.

The dazzling light from Flashbang made it hard to see what was happening in the projections, so all I could do was wait for the view to improve. The next scene that was shown on the screen was the Dragon swooping downwards to attack the members of [Silver Wind Chime].

Warwick was trying to block the Dragon’s attacks with his large shield, but there was no way he could defend against the swooping attacks that carried the entire body weight of the Dragon behind them. He was sent flying and crashed heavily into the wall behind him.

Warwick was unable to stand back up, and I could clearly tell from the projections that the members of the [Silver Wind Chime], who had been relatively calm up until this point, were now quite shaken.

The loss of their Tank, who played an integral role as their spiritual mainstay, caused a nearly palpable wave of anxiety to wash over the entire party. From this situation, I intuitively knew that the [Silver Wind Chime] was about to be wiped out, and I wanted to turn away from the monitor… But at that very moment— the Lesser Dragon let out a deafening roar as if it was certain of its victory.

The roar of the Dragon captivated my eyes and ears, and as the audience trickled away from the monitor, I watched quietly until the members of the [Silver Wind Chime] were completely wiped out.
