Jake was teleported to a place pretty close to a battlefield, he knew that things would be different when he accepted that mission, but he didn't think that it would be that surprising… in the distance, he could see two armies facing each other, and they belonged to gremlins and some people that could fly and had bat-like wings.
"It didn't seem like there is a dungeon nearby… so this must be two armies of two different bases fighting for control over them," Jake thought. "I should move to a less open area and then hide and gather some intel."
Keeping himself hidden when forty crystal wolves were behind him would be heard, but fortunately, or perhaps, unfortunately, the area had a lot of smoke around, so they wouldn't be found that easily. Besides, Jake had a feeling that as long as they didn't get too close to one of the bases, they would be fine. The mission is to defend the base, not hunt other creatures endlessly.
In any case, things were quite noisy there, but things didn't improve much when Jake moved to another area and then checked the surroundings at the top of a hill. He found three other battlefields. Massive fireballs flying in a wide arc… lightning bolts falling from the sky… ice tornadoes ravaging massive areas… things were pretty chaotic. Still, Jake felt that facing such situations would be a lot of fun.
"Better than thinking about those weird dreams…" Jake thought while furrowing his eyebrows.
It was unexpected that there were four battlefields in an area of ten or so kilometers… Nevertheless, it seemed that other areas had also suffered from those conflicts. Most of the vegetation had been burned to a crisp, and many craters were around. Also, the sky was so dark, and yet there were no signs of rain or of the night. Maybe the atmosphere of that world was weird, or the constantly magic battlefields altered things that much.
"It seems that the bases are five kilometers away from each other, and the people here spawn randomly… I suppose I can think that I won't be attacked from behind by someone suddenly spawning, but…" Jake rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "I will have to do that to obtain a base, it seems… Not to mention, I won't be able to sleep much."
Attacking any type of enemy from behind wasn't something that Jake wanted to do, but a frontal attack against someone that managed to reach that world and stayed for who knows how much longer than him would be rather dangerous. Not to mention, the owners of the bases probably had armies or the means to summon them.
"Maybe it is the dungeon core… it is the dungeon core that summons the monsters, and by succeeding it, we will keep them," Jake thought.
Jake won't wonder how he should select his target. If he moves in any direction, he will find battlefields and bases. Still, just attacking them to complete the mission seemed like a waste when he could use that mission to get a lot stronger. He didn't want to think of those dreams too much, but it was clear that he would need strength to keep going since others would fear him thanks to the actions of the Jake of that universe, the so-called King Judas. He already hated the name, and the title felt it was an only mockery.
"I wonder if I would have done the same in his place… Trying to unite the species while making everyone stronger," Jake thought. "In the end, he was betrayed by those he had spared… I won't make the same mistake."
Jake looked for some sort of obstacle that he could use to hide his crystal wolves, and he only found a small grove that still had some trees standing. It was better than nothing… after that, he approached the battlefields and checked if the monsters dropped items… they didn't… probably because they didn't belong to the system.

"No items, but they still might be compatible with my skill…" Jake thought as he equipped his pestilence crossbow and then enhanced the bolt with dark flames.
The enemy Jake was targetting was a gremlin, those creatures sure looked troublesome with their parameters, and with their dark and red bodies and their vicious blood-red eyes, Jake felt like killing all of them. The bolt flew so fast that the monster looked like it had stopped flying in the air… the bolt pierced the head of the beast and killed it instantly. Nevertheless, Jake didn't get a single coin… that was really messed up, but perhaps it was a way of people abusing the system as Jake had planned. Still…
The skill Fire Resistance obtained 100 experience points.
"Wait… where can I see the experience of skills?" Jake wondered. "Also, I wanted parameters, not skill experience."
Jake tried to check the experience of the skills using Appraisal or analysis, but it didn't work. He knew that the skill would have experience, but… Regardless, no one noticed Jake's intervention since he was hidden behind a small hill, and he was pretty far away from both bases. With that in mind, he decided to try again while focusing on controlling Master Thief. He managed to do that, but he also felt mentally tired, like when he was using dark flames. Moreover, he didn't get a single status point. Only after killing ten or so gremlins does he get some results.
