TL: Moonlit
Li Shu was still in shock over the possibility of his uncle committing slow suicide. After hearing Shen Ye’s words, it took him a while to regain his composure, and he hurriedly said, “Madam, please think of a way to save my uncle.”
He and his uncle were dependent on each other. When he was young, his grandparents and parents passed away one after another, and his uncle raised him. Later, when he got married and had his own family, he focused more on his immediate family and didn’t care as much about his uncle as before.
So when his uncle wanted to adopt a granddaughter, he didn’t oppose it. He thought it would be nice to have a child accompanying his uncle.
Now he truly regretted it. Why didn’t he take better care of his uncle and niece? Even if he had taken some time to guide his niece, perhaps she wouldn’t have turned into such a heartless person, and his uncle wouldn’t have suffered like this.
Shen Ye said, “Let’s go see Grandpa Li now to prevent him from becoming distraught and unable to eat or sleep.”
Li Shu immediately nodded.
“By the way, I know where your niece is,” Shen Ye said. “I will have someone bring her here, and when your uncle sees her, it will surely be a shock for him. You’ll be responsible for comforting him.”
Li Shu had no objections.
Shen Ye whispered a few words to Ye Ze, and Ye Ze quickly had the bodyguards go find someone.
Afterward, they went to see the old tailor.
The old tailor lived in the adjacent villa. Ever since Grandpa Ye decided to permanently reside in Hai Cheng, Ye Ze bought several villas in the surrounding area to accommodate the servants. The old tailor originally lived in the capital, but he was brought to Hai Cheng by Ye Ze and Shen Ye because of their upcoming marriage and was settled in the neighboring villa.
When they entered the villa, they learned that the old tailor was in his studio, selecting fabric for the dresses.
Shen Ye whispered to Ye Ze, “I think he wants to finish the dresses quickly and then leave without any attachments.”
Of course, this leaving didn’t refer to going on a trip but completely disappearing from the world.
Ye Ze furrowed his brows slightly but didn’t respond.
The old tailor quickly noticed Ye Ze and Shen Ye’s arrival and said in surprise, “Young Master, Madam, why have you come?”
Upon hearing the words “Madam,” Shen Ye’s eyebrow raised slightly. Then he thought, well, this old man is also showing respect towards him, so he didn’t bother to argue.
“We came to talk about the matter you didn’t want to reveal earlier,” Shen Ye got straight to the point.
The old tailor’s expression changed.
Li Shu muttered, “I have already told Young Master and the others about Li Ning’s situation.”
The old tailor was taken aback. “You…”
“Young Master and the others are also concerned about you,” Li Shu said. “And you know the abilities of Madam. He has long seen through your experiences from your appearance and knows that you still haven’t let go.”
The old tailor thought of Shen Ye’s abilities and hesitated, unsure how to argue.
Shen Ye stared at him and said, “It’s not just that you haven’t let go, it seems like you’re practically starving yourself. It’s obvious that you’re slowly committing suicide.”
“I… I didn’t intend to commit suicide…”
“You think I can’t see through it?” Shen Ye interrupted.
The old tailor lowered his head and fell silent.
“I initially didn’t want to meddle in your affairs, but I thought about it. If something happens to you after you finish making our dresses, that would be extremely inauspicious,” Shen Ye provoked him directly. “Do you want our wedding to become ill-fated?”
The old tailor’s expression drastically changed, and he raised his head abruptly. “No, no, no… I didn’t mean that…”
“So listen to me and quickly step out of the shadow,” Shen Ye said.
The old tailor didn’t want to bring up this matter. Whenever he thought about it, it pained him. Now, hearing Shen Ye’s words, he couldn’t help but hesitate.
He knew his own situation. He was hurt by his granddaughter, and he truly felt that life had lost its meaning. Plus, the Li family was living a good life, and he had no regrets. Thus, he had a sense of disinterest in living.
If Shen Ye and Ye Ze hadn’t come to find him, he would very likely have chosen to end his life.
“Young Master, Madam, I’m sorry. I won’t let your wedding become ill-fated,” the old tailor immediately apologized.
He thought Shen Ye was right. He had personally sewn the dresses for Ye Ze and Shen Ye, and if something happened to him shortly after, it would indeed be extremely inauspicious.
Shen Ye made a sound of agreement, somewhat satisfied with his attitude. “To resolve a problem, one must face it. I have called your granddaughter here. If there’s anything that’s bothering you, feel free to talk to her.”
The old tailor was surprised. “You… You called Li Ning here?”
“Yes, she is the instigator,” Shen Ye shrugged. “Don’t pity her. From a moral standpoint, she is heartless. From a legal standpoint, she has committed theft by stealing from your safe. She doesn’t deserve sympathy.”
The old tailor hesitated and said, “But… but she has a heart condition.”
The main reason he didn’t hold Li Ning accountable was that he was afraid of causing her heart condition to worsen.
Shen Ye replied, “What’s there to fear? I just need to stick a talisman on her, and I guarantee her heart will remain calm.”
The old tailor felt relieved.
Shen Ye smirked and leaned closer to Ye Ze, whispering, “That woman must have previously used her heart condition to manipulate Grandfather Li. Grandfather Li is too kind-hearted and always lets her have her way. But I won’t indulge her. Let’s see what kind of tricks she’s up to later.”
Hearing Shen Ye’s words, the old tailor’s face showed a hint of awkwardness.
In the past, whenever he tried to discipline Li Ning, she would pretend to have a heart attack. He could see through her act, but he couldn’t bear to scold her, considering her young age and the fact that she had a heart condition after being abandoned. As a result, Li Ning became increasingly disobedient and eventually even stole from his safe…
Ultimately, his method of education was also problematic.
Shen Ye glanced at the old tailor and attached a talisman to him, saying, “I’ll prepare you first, so you won’t faint from the shock later.”
The old tailor remained silent.
Not long after, Li Ning was apprehended.
She had originally been in the imperial capital, but she ran out of money these past few days. Upon learning that the old tailor was in Haicheng, she took a flight to follow him.
As for why she had no money… it was because her biological parents had deceived her and taken away all her money, including the money and antique gold bars she had stolen from the old tailor’s safe not long ago.
The bodyguard threw Li Ning to the ground, and she let out a cry of pain. Then, she caught sight of the old tailor.
Initially, she was very scared, thinking she was being robbed. But upon seeing the old tailor, she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief and immediately burst into tears. “Grandfather, so it was you who wanted to see me… I was so scared, thinking I encountered a robber…”
The old tailor looked at her without saying a word.
Of course, Li Ning knew that her previous actions had hurt the old tailor’s heart. She wasn’t a fool either. She knew that if she wanted to regain the old tailor’s trust, she had to put on a good show.
“Grandfather, I was wrong… I shouldn’t have stolen from you… but everything was instigated by my parents…” Li Ning crawled to the old tailor’s feet, gripping his pants with her fingers. “When they first acknowledged me, they already knew you had money and wanted to extort money from me. Unfortunately, I was too attached to their love and was deceived into returning to their side. Then, they repeatedly asked me for money and drained me. When I wanted to come back and seek your help, they restrained me and wouldn’t let me leave…”
The old tailor remained silent, calmly watching her.
Li Ning cursed inwardly at the stubborn old man and continued to cry, “Later, when I told them I wanted to come back and ask you for money, they let me go. But they recorded everything and threatened to expose the recording if I dared to escape… I had no choice but to follow their orders. Stealing from your safe was also under their instruction… Please believe me, I know I was wrong, but I was forced into it…”
Her sobbing cries sounded pitiful and genuine, enough to convince an ordinary person.
But Shen Ye was not an ordinary person. He chuckled and said, “You sure know how to make up stories.”
Li Ning furrowed her brows and looked towards Shen Ye. When she saw Shen Ye and Ye Ze clearly, her eyes widened.
She had only noticed the old tailor earlier and hadn’t paid attention to the fact that Ye Ze and Shen Ye were right next to him…
Ye Ze was the head of the Ye family, and she grew up with the old tailor. The old tailor was fiercely loyal to the Ye family, which made her somewhat afraid of Ye Ze. And Shen Ye was also formidable, with the ability to read physiognomy… So, did Shen Ye see through her pretense during her tearful confession just now?
Her expression changed rapidly.
Shen Ye sneered at her. “You guessed right. I know you’re acting, and everything you said is false.”
Li Ning remained silent.
“You left Grandpa Li because you thought he was old and a big trouble, and you didn’t want to take care of him in his old age. In your eyes, although Grandpa Li is wealthy and can afford caregivers when he falls ill, there are still certain things that you, as his granddaughter, would have to handle personally, such as going to the hospital and paying medical expenses. You simply didn’t want to take care of Grandpa Li, and coincidentally, your parents came looking for you, so you took the opportunity to escape,” Shen Ye said, his eyes filled with disgust, not bothering to hide it. “Truly worse than an animal. Grandpa Li raised you, treated your illness, and helped you find a suitable heart. Who knows how much money, effort, and energy he spent on you, and you not only left without a care but also deceived him!”
As these words came out, the old tailor was already staggering.
He knew Li Ning had been deceiving him all along, just to get money from him, but he never wanted to believe it or think too deeply about it.
Now that Shen Ye had exposed it, the old tailor felt a sense of desolation in his heart. His head felt dizzy, unable to describe the feeling.
Li Shu quickly went forward to support him. “Uncle, are you okay?”
The old tailor shook his head, unable to utter a word.
It was Shen Ye who reassured Li Shu from the side. “Your uncle is fine. I used a calming talisman, so even if he gets agitated, he won’t faint.”
Li Shu breathed a sigh of relief.
Li Ning, seeing that Shen Ye couldn’t be easily fooled, cursed him inwardly while quickly thinking of a solution in her mind.
She believed that the old tailor was the best breakthrough point since he loved her the most.
So, with tears in her eyes, she kowtowed to the old tailor. “Grandfather, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me this time? I will definitely be a filial granddaughter and take care of you properly. When you grow old, I’ll even take care of your bodily needs…”
Shen Ye interrupted her. “No need to count on you. The Ye family has plenty of servants to take care of him.”
Li Ning remained silent.
She was filled with resentment, but she couldn’t afford to offend Shen Ye, so she could only grit her teeth silently.
Shen Ye sneered, “You came back to steal from the safe, and indeed, your family members encouraged and instigated you. But more than anything, you willingly deceived Grandpa Li.”
Li Ning knew she had no defense and could only use her tears to cover up her embarrassment after being exposed.
“Do you not resent your family for deceiving you and taking away your money?” Shen Ye stared at her and asked.
Li Ning lowered her head, pretending to wipe her tears with her fingers, refusing to answer that question.
“I know you don’t resent them,” Shen Ye said, a sarcastic smile playing on his lips. “Grandpa Li was so good to you, but you were worried about your own financial security and ran away. Your family members deceived you and treated you like a servant, yet you willingly accepted it. In simple terms, you are disgustingly pathetic!”
Li Ning sobbed but remained silent. She knew that no matter what she said, it would only make people dislike her more.
Shen Ye’s gaze turned icy. “Gratitude for raising you is greater than gratitude for giving you life. Your biological parents were poor, so they abandoned you in the heavy snow when they saw that you had a heart condition. If it weren’t for Grandpa Li, you would have died twenty years ago! He raised you, allowed you to enjoy wealth and luxury, but you repay him with ingratitude! Are you even human? No, you’re not. You’re more disgusting than an animal!”
Li Ning was being verbally attacked, and she hated Shen Ye to the core, wishing she could slap him in the face.
But she knew she couldn’t do anything. The most important thing now was to continue to win over the old tailor. The old tailor had a soft heart, and he was the only person she could possibly sway.
“Grandfather, I will definitely change… I know you’ve been the best to me. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have come back to find you… I truly realize my mistake…” Li Ning knelt in front of the old tailor, banging her head against the floor. “Please forgive me this time, okay? I swear I will be a filial granddaughter from now on.”
The old tailor lowered his head, his face filled with sorrow.
This child, he had spoiled her.
Observing the old tailor’s expression, Shen Ye knew he was susceptible to persuasion. He narrowed his eyes and said to Ye Ze, “Call the police. She, her biological parents, and other family members are suspected of being involved in organized theft. None of them should be able to escape.”
Ye Ze nodded and immediately instructed someone to make the arrangements.
When Li Ning heard that Shen Ye was going to report to the police, she panicked and screamed, “No, you can’t call the police!”
If the police were called, all her family members would be arrested, and her whole family would be finished.
She quickly turned to the old tailor, crying and pleading, “Grandfather, I don’t want to go to jail. Please quickly tell Young Master and Madam not to call the police…”
As she spoke, she suddenly clutched her chest and fell backward.
The old tailor’s face changed, and he called out in concern, “Xiao Ning, are you experiencing heart pain?”
Li Ning, seeing that the old tailor still cared about her, knew there was still hope. She was about to cry out and try to gain the old tailor’s sympathy when she heard Shen Ye sneer, “She’s deceiving you.”
