Shen Yuechuan was sure that Xiao Yunyun would take him to the hospital if he told her the truth.
He didn’t want Xiao Yunyun to know what was going on with his body before he could figure it out himself.
He didn’t think it was selfish of him to do that because he had the responsibility to do it.
However, he realized that it wasn’t easy to fool her when he noticed Xiao Yunyun’s incredulous look.
To his relief, he had a perfect excuse.
“I drank too much yesterday.” Shen Yuechuan kneaded his temples as if he had a headache. “It’s been a long time since I had a good sleep like just now.”
“Sure enough, he slept too deeply,” Xiao Yunyun thought to herself. Then she said, “Shen Yuechuan, you were sleeping like a log.”
Shen Yuechuan didn’t mind it at all. He rested his chin on his hand while asking Xiao Yunyun, “Then what do you look like?”
She would be casting herself as something else other than a person no matter what she answered.
Xiao Yunyun was smart enough to see through his trick. She said with a serious look, “As a patient, you should answer the doctor’s questions, not to question the doctor. What if I tell you that doctors are like angels?”
Shen Yuechuan nodded with a serious look after gazing at Xiao Yunyun for a while. “You said it. You’re an angel!”
“…” Xiao Yunyun did a double-take when she heard Shen Yuechuan’s praise since she had been used to his banters. However, she subconsciously sidetracked the issue. “By the way, did strain yourself with exercise or felt your wound bleeding again after you came home yesterday?”
“Dr. Xiao, I swear I didn’t.” After a pause, Shen Yuechuan said, “Anyway, it’s not a nick. So it’s normal for it to bleed, isn’t it?”
“The human body has a blood coagulation system. You bled abnormally!” Xiao Yunyun looked at Shen Yuechuan with conviction. “You must have hurt your wound by accident, but you didn’t notice. Just be careful in the next few days. I don’t want to come and change your dressing every day…”
Shen Yuechuan looked at his injured hand. “That reminds me…”
He thought that he would often have the chance to see Xiao Yunyun if he got hurt from time to time.
Xiao Yunyun seemed to have seen through Shen Yuechuan. She asked with disbelief, “What?”
Shen Yuechuan gave a meaningful smile. “Nothing.”
Xiao Yunyun decided not to talk to Shen Yuechuan anymore. She tidied away the medications and stood up. “I brought you some breakfast. Help yourself.”
Shen Yuechuan was glad that Xiao Yunyun had brought him breakfast. He immediately stood up and followed Xiao Yunyun to the dining room.
Xiao Yunyun had bought some common breakfast food: carefully-stewed congee, aromatic tea eggs, deep-fried dough sticks that were golden and crispy, and two cups of soybean milk.
Shen Yuechuan was surprised. “Are you going to eat this?”
Shen Yuechuan had never eaten a “humble meal” like that for breakfast.
He always had western-style breakfasts when he was in America. He used to have breakfasts at certain restaurants after returning from abroad. His assistant would have his breakfasts sent to his office when he was too busy to eat out. What he chose was far from frugal, although it wasn’t too luxurious.
Shen Yuechuan wondered why Xiao Yunyun, a young lady who grew up in a rich family, would have that for breakfast.
“What’s the matter?” Xiao Yunyun looked at Shen Yuechuan, puzzled. “I usually eat this in the morning.”
Shen Yuechuan narrowed his eyes and sized Xiao Yunyun up. “I didn’t expect that it would be this easy to feed you.”
She thought to herself, “To feed me? Do my meals have anything to do with him?”
Xiao Yunyun suddenly realized something. “I forgot that you never eat these for breakfast.”
“Who told you that?” Shen Yuechuan grabbed the congee and took a sip. “We used to have only two slices of dry toast for breakfast when the orphanage was short of funds. If only we had enjoyed such a big meal for breakfast back then…”
It was the first time that Shen Yuechuan had talked about his past in front of Xiao Yunyun.
Xiao Yunyun opened her mouth, wondering if she should ask Shen Yuechuan about his experience in the orphanage because she wanted to know more about his past.
“But Shen Yuechuan was abandoned. Those days in the orphanage… must be traumatic for him, right?
“So he keeps going toward his goal without ever looking back.”
Xiao Yunyun finally decided not to ask him anything. She inserted a straw into the soybean milk and pushed the disposable cup in front of Shen Yuechuan. “It tastes mellow. It’s the most delicious soybean milk I’ve ever had. Try it.”
Shen Yuechuan took a sip and nodded. “You have good taste.”
Xiao Yunyun said with a broad smile, “You said it!” Then she suddenly let out a cry as it occurred to her that Xia Mili would have dinner with Lu Boyan that night.
She forgot to tell Luo Xiaoxi about it!
It was too late to tell her since she was flying to Europe for her honeymoon that day.
Shen Yuechuan laid down his spoon and chopsticks when he noticed the serious look on Xiao Yunyun’s face. “What’s wrong?”
Xiao Yunyun looked up at Shen Yuechuan and then looked away with a guilty conscience. “Nothing…” She thought that she shouldn’t tell Shen Yuechuan that she had kept an eye on Xia Mili, otherwise Lu Boyan would also know about it.
In that case, it would harm the relationship between Lu Boyan and Su Jianan.
Shen Yuechuan was sensitive enough to see through Xiao Yunyun. He recalled the day when he saw Xiao Yunyun watching Xia Mili.
He wanted to know what Xiao Yunyun had found out and how she had mistaken Lu Boyan and Xia Mili.
···
The city came to life when the two finished their breakfast.
“Where are you going?” Shen Yuechuan asked Xiao Yunyun as he took his documents to leave for work.
“I’m going home to have some rest,” Xiao Yunyun said, “or I’ll be very sleepy during my night shift today.”
Shen Yuechuan nodded. “I’ll drive you home.”
“You’ll have to take a lot of detours if you go to your company after driving me home.” Xiao Yunyun asked, “Don’t you fear that you’ll be late?”
“I do fear. But—” Shen Yuechuan said with a mysterious smile, “Your cousin-in-law will forgive me.”
Lu Boyan had been late for work from time to time when he married Su Jianan. He had also gone off work on time for the first time, which shocked half the staff in his company.
That was the reason why Shen Yuechuan believed that Lu Boyan would forgive him if he was late for work because of staying with Xiao Yunyun.
Xiao Yunyun didn’t get Shen Yuechuan’s point at all. She thought that Lu Boyan wouldn’t blame him for her sake.
She said with a proud look, “Shen Yuechuan, I’m your lucky star!”
Shen Yuechuan couldn’t help but touch Xiao Yunyun’s head. “You’re right.”
He would have treated life as merely playing games if Xiao Yunyun hadn’t come into his life.
He would have never taken his life seriously, nor would he want to get married, to father children, or to start a family like Lu Boyan and Su Yicheng did.
Therefore, Xiao Yunyun was his lucky star.
Xiao Yunyun felt a great sense of achievement because of Shen Yuechuan’s recognition. She even thought that the scenery on her way home looked more beautiful than ever.
Xiao Yunyun changed her clothes and lay on the bed in a good mood after she got home. She didn’t fall asleep until she tossed and turned under her quilt for a long time.
Su Yunjin’s call wakened her at noon.
“You don’t have to go to work during the day, do you?” Su Yunjin said, “Come to the hotel and have lunch with me.”
“Oh,” said Xiao Yunyun, “You’ll have to wait for a while. I haven’t gotten up yet.”
“My girl, you’d better keep regular hours,” Su Yunjin stopped scolding and said in a gentle voice, “Get dolled up before you come to me. As a lady, you shouldn’t wear any T-shirts or jeans all day.”
Xiao Yunyun yawned. She got out of bed and put on her T-shirt and jeans as she said “all right.” Then she went downstairs and called a taxi to Su Yunjin’s hotel.
Xiao Yunyun received Su Yunjin’s message that she was in a private room on the fourth floor as soon as she reached the restaurant.
Xiao Yunyun pushed the door open and entered as soon as she found the private room, only to find that Su Yunjin wasn’t alone.
There was a gracefully dressed lady whose age was around Su Yunjin’s in the room. Qin Han was with them.
Xiao Yunyun was stunned—”What on earth happened?”
“My girl, why are you standing at the door?” Su Yunjin waved at Xiao Yunyun. “Come in.”
Xiao Yunyun remembered that Su Yunjin had asked her to dress herself up. She realized what was going on when she saw Qin Han. She walked into the private room with a forced smile. “Mom.”
“Get seated.” Su Yunjin took Xiao Yunyun’s hand to make her sit down. Then she said, “This is Auntie Zhou. This is her youngest son, Qin Han.”
Qin Han said with a smile, “Auntie Su, we know each other.”
Su Yunjin and Ms. Zhou were surprised. Su Yunjin finally said, “You’ve known each other for a long time. Why didn’t you tell us about it? Your mom and I were thinking about how the two of you could meet since yesterday!”
Su Yunjin and Ms. Zhou both laughed. Qin Han also smiled. However, that couldn’t make Xiao Yunyun smile.
She had never expected that her blind date would be Qin Han…
“D*mn! Why isn’t it a more handsome man?”
Mrs. Zhou asked, “Yunyun, how did you get to know Qin Han?”
Only then did Xiao Yunyun realize that she should greet Mrs. Zhou first. “Auntie Zhou, I met him at a party before my cousin’s wedding.”
“I see.” Ms. Zhou stood up with her bag in hand. “Then we don’t need to introduce you. Take your time and have a nice talk here. Your mom and I are going to the beauty salon.”
Su Yunjin patted Xiao Yunyun’s hand with a smile, then she picked up her bag and left.
Xiao Yunyun immediately changed her posture and looked at Qin Han as soon as the door closed, “So you’re the son of my mom’s friend.”
“You should be glad that it’s me.” Qin Han took off his suit jacket. “But how come you’re being forced to have a blind date? Don’t you dare to say that you like Shen Yuechuan?”
Xiao Yunyun waved her chopsticks in the air and gestured for Qin Han to keep quiet. “The wall has ears!”
Qin Han said leisurely, “The sound insulation here is very good.”
Xiao Yunyun: “…”
Qin Han went on to say, “My mom wants me to have a relationship with you.”
Xiao Yunyun was stunned because she hadn’t expected Qin Han to be so frank. “I want you to know that you’d better not listen to Auntie Zhou.”
Qin Han smiled. “I know that you like Shen Yuechuan. By the way… maybe you’ll fall in love with me if I give it a try.”
Xiao Yunyun also wanted to fall in love with someone else, which she knew was impossible.
She would grin whenever she thought of Shen Yuechuan because she thought that no one was better than him, and she had even dreamed of marrying Shen Yuechuan during those days.
In her mind, Shen Yuechuan had already become irreplaceable.
