CH.114 Testing out Millennium Shield

I walked back to the seventh room. Last time I was here, a giant A-rank monster was looking at me, but now, there was only a small skeletal beast. I don’t know why this dungeon likes skeletons so much. Or why it randomly spawned a giant bull monster. I just own the place, Christina runs it. And I don’t think she knows either.

I began to look through the monsters I already had in sleeves or toploaders. I’ll need someone to act as DPS while I do the defending. This would be a decent chance to use a throw away fusion, but my toploader polymerization is still on cooldown.

(We could just make a toploader for another copy of Polymerization.) Laura said.

(Yeah. Let’s do it.)

3x Energy Drain, 2x Morale Boost, 2x Kojikocy, Hyper Hammerhead, 2x Skull Red Bird, 2x Nin-Ken Dog, 3x Lava Battleguard, 2x St. Joan [extra copies], 3x Stumbling, 2x Blue-Winged Crown, 2x Ancient Lizard Warrior, Gagagigo

(Thanks Laura. Now, what monster to summon? What do I have the materials for?)

(Plenty of monsters. How about Giltia the D. Knight? It’s humanoid, strong enough and you have the materials for it.)

I quickly checked out Laura’s recommendation.

(Yeah, that should work. Let’s go with it.) I decided.

I pulled out the materials for it.

Guardian of the Labyrinth and Protector of the Throne. A strange duo, considering that they make a dragon knight. I didn’t bother putting sleeves on any of the materials, as I really don’t think I’ll care enough about losing them. And I can always try to get them again. They are all common.

“I activate Polymerization. I fuse together Guardian of the Labyrinth and Protector of the Throne to fusion summon Giltia the D. Knight.”

A blue whirlwind appeared and took in the two materials.

And from it, my monster appeared.

He is tall. He has to be over two meters tall. Why is every humanoid monster I summon a freaking basketball player? He is dressed in blue armor that has some green plates over it. He also has a spear that is as long as he is tall.

“Master, thank you for summoning me. What can I do for you?” Giltia asked.

“Hello Giltia. Do you mind if I call you that?” I responded.

“No. That is fine.” He answered. “What can I do for you, Master?” He repeated the question.

“I’m going to test out defending with Millennium Shield. I need you to act as my DPS. Don’t kill things too quickly, so I can get some practice in.” I gave him his mission.

“As you wish, Master.”

We walked into the large room before I summoned my shield.

“Millennium Shield.” I called to summon it out. It was a little strange to use a duel disk, instead of the DiaDhank that I got used to, but I think this will be better in the long run.

As the Millennium Shield rose, I realized just how huge it is. It was over 2 meters wide and around 1,5 meters tall. It’s huge. I don’t think anyone could carry around a shield this large. Well thankfully I don’t have to carry it as Millennium Shield floats.

Sadly I didn’t have the time to play around with its controls before monsters came at us. With the corridors between the large rooms being ‘anti-monster zones’, I can just retreat back to the corridor to be safe, but I want to be able to stop the charge. Trial by fire and all that. And I can just summon Dark Magician or St. Joan if I need more help.

“Master, please hold firm.” Giltia said to me. “They are coming.”

I took a position behind Millennium Shield. Even if I can’t actually move it with my strength, touching it should be enough to gain some experience towards shield skills. Probably. So I grabbed the handles at the back of Millennium Shield. I guess this thing would be a two handed shield. Well at its size it ought to be.

I braced for impact as the C-rank skeletal beast charged at me. Sadly, as I was coming from the core room, it was the first monster I ran into. The good news was that the sub-room we were in held no other monsters, so I could focus entirely on it.

(What does it do?) I confirmed. I did already have an idea.

(It makes you shine a light that draws monsters to you. It can also work on humans, but it’s much less effective against humans than Yelling Taunt.) Laura said.

(Yelling Taunt? Like insulting someone to get them to attack you?)

(Exactly.) Laura confirmed. (It’s more effective against creatures that understand human language. But shining taunt is more effective against monsters.)

(I see. Is it possible to have both?)

(It is rare, but it is possible.) Laura said.

(Well then, let’s test it out.) I decided and we walked into the last sub-part of the seventh room.

“RUN!” I yelled as I realized the mistake I made. Shining taunt got every monster in the room focused on me. Even with the monsters being different kinds of imps, with swords and spears, I still don’t want to face an army of imps. Or perhaps a squadron. There were over 20 of them coming at us. I probably should have just installed Raregold Armor onto Millennium Shield, instead of myself.

We escaped back to the second quarter that we had cleared out earlier.

“Master, we can take them. Let’s go back in.” Giltia said to me.

“Are you crazy? I can’t hold off that many on my own. And I doubt you can take care of all of them on your own either.” I told him.

“I could with your help.” He said back.

“Yeah. By sacrificing me. That’s not a good idea. And I can just learn over time. Let’s head back.” I ordered.

“None of us would ever sacrifice Master. We can’t exist without Master after all.” Giltia said.

“... Yeah, let’s not try it anyway. I don’t want to be swarmed that badly.”

“I don’t think 23 monsters count as a swarm.” He said as he followed behind me.

Did you count them? When?

“Welcome back, Brian. How did your test go?” Christina welcomed me as I walked back to the core room.

“I think you know already. Or are you saying you didn’t keep an eye on me.” I responded.

“Of course I kept an eye on you. But I wanted to hear from you. So how did it go?” She repeated.

“... Fine, I guess. I did realize that looking at a group of monsters running at you is scary.” I admitted.

“I suppose that is something. Your shield is quite impressive. How do you carry something so large?” Christina asked.

“I don’t. The shield floats.” I told her as I let go of Millennium Shield. The shield kept levitating in the air.

“Oh. That’s quite something. What kind of shield is it?” She asked.

“Well, it’s not technically a shield. It’s a monster. Just like that carriage we took to come here.” I told her.

“Another mysterious thing you have. Well at least it seems perfectly safe.”

“Yeah, it should be. No destructive power here. Unless you charge head first into it.” I joked about what the skeletal beast did.

“That is true. That beast really didn’t expect you to be able to raise the shield that high.” Christina commented.

I unsummoned my two monsters and sat down next to her to relax after my training.
