Chapter 144 - Living Without Light

She kissed Dexter's lips, soft and slow. But it was like a strong attack for Dexter.

His wife must have been tired from working all day. He didn't want to make her even more tired. Dexter returned the kiss gently and did not seem too pushy. Only for a moment, then he ended it unwillingly.

"Behave yourself, the sun is still rising." Her voice sounded so cold. He also did not dare to hug Kaili anymore, afraid that if they were touching each other for another three minutes, he could not hold back and 'pounce' on his wife.

"Hmph ... I know." Kaili let him go. She put her hands back on the table.

Dexter walked to the bed and threw his body on the bed.

"I went to the hospital earlier." Kaili turned and looked at Dexter.

Dexter was confused. "When and what time?" He was afraid that when Kaili went to the hospital, he was at GBK.

"My colleague and I, who are the art directors of this project, went outside the office to look for some references and make observations. At lunchtime, he went out with his girlfriend instead. So I went to the hospital to take you to lunch together. It happened that we haven't had lunch together for a long time but they said you were having surgery."

Dexter breathed a sigh of relief. Indeed, Dexter's lunchtime was scheduled for surgery, and he was grateful that Kaili came when he was there. Otherwise, the receptionist at Danka's hospital would immediately say that he was not in the hospital. If so, what excuse would he use?

"Are you tired of doing surgery for long hours?" asked Kaili again.

"Hmm ... I'm exhausted. My wife, I want to be pampered to release my fatigue. I've been fighting with scalpels and blood all day long." Dexter demanded.

"Ughh ... What do you want?" Kaili raised an eyebrow.

"For example, providing water for me to bathe and ... washing me?" His eyes flickered mischievously, hinting at something seductive.

Kaili's cheeks flushed. She quickly shook her head, "No, no, I'll prepare a bath for you but you have to clean yourself!"

If she bathed Dexter, Kaili was sure what would happen was not as simple as 'taking a bath'.

Kaili immediately got up to the bathroom and immediately prepared warm water for him in the bathtub.

Dexter sighed and got up following Kaili to the bathroom.

As soon as Dexter came, Kaili became alarmed. She dodged a little. Dexter was getting more and more annoyed by her behavior. However, he didn't want to bother his wife this time, not because he didn't want her, but Dexter knew Kaili must be tired from work.

He caught Kaili's hand. In the next second, he took his beloved wife in his arm and turned to the room. They sat on the sofa.

"No need to bother filling the bathtub, I'll shower directly from the head shower."

He didn't plan to take a bath either. There wasn't Kaili there, how could he have a fun bath.

"Oh, then I'll prepare dinner. I bought it for us."

"Hmph ... I haven't eaten yet." Dexter got up, "I'll take a quick shower." He went back to the bathroom.

After dinner, the two of them were busy with their respective activities. Dexter went to his study room to get some work done, while Kaili remained in their bedroom. She was also busy thinking about creative ideas. Since earlier, her mind still couldn't find a creative one. Now she was a little frustrated.

She slightly confirmed Dexter's idea of their first meeting but she had a little trouble when she wanted to put it in the form of a short video ad.

Kaili was scratching her head again. It seemed that ever since the project was given to her, her new hobby was now scratching her head, even though her head didn't itch at all.

At 10 PM, Dexter returned to the bedroom, not because his work was done, but because he was the one who insisted on quitting. He guessed Kaili was probably still struggling with her job right now. She must be holding back from sleeping. So Dexter's just wanted to take her to sleep.

For God's sake, he didn't want the burdensome work made Kaili couldn't sleep. All he knew, his wife was very fond of sleeping. For people who like to sleep, being forced not to sleep because 'something' was the most annoying thing!

However, what happened was the opposite. He found Kaili was sleeping on the table. Her head was buried under the pile of paper she was working on.

Dexter smiled and sneered to himself, "You sleepyhead!"

After laughing at Kaili, Dexter lifted her onto the bed and went back to work.

????

Edrei called Silvia, who happened to be staring at the sky on her balcony.

The telephone ringing sound moved Silvia from her reverie. She reached into her pocket and took her mobile phone from there. It turned out that the one who called her was Edrei, her best friend.

"My dear, are you at home? Or are you on night duty?"

Silvia answered calmly, "I'm in my apartment."

"Wow... My dear, let me guess, you must be counting stars, right?"

Edrei was too excited, causing Silvia to only pull one eyebrow.

"Right."

"Then, how many stars have you counted? Have you managed to find one of the brightest stars that can illuminate your gloomy heart?"

Silvia went silent. The brightest star, huh? She used to have it. But now, the star was dimming its light.

Silvia sighed, Edrei brought her back to the past, on the night before Dexter went abroad to continue his medical school.

On the night of their farewell, the two of them were in the attic, looking up at the sky. Silvia, who was 10 years old, asked a silly question, "Brother, can we take the stars?"

Dexter stroked her long hair gently, "Do you want a star?"

The woman whose eyes were yellow like the setting sun nodded innocently. "Aren't the stars very beautiful? It shines bright. I would like to have it. Brother, can you take it for me?"

Dexter smiled, he had always been taught to be warm and gentlemanly. He stood in front of Silvia, pinched her nose lightly, and said, "Stars cannot be taken, but can be owned by anyone."

Hearing the word that anyone could have it, the little girl's eyes immediately sparkled, "Then, can I have a star?"

"Of course!"

Silvia looked up at the stars in the sky with great enthusiasm but not for long, her enthusiasm faded, "There are so many stars. I'm confused about which one to choose." Her lips were pushed forward. "Brother... I don't know which star I want." She was whining to Dexter.

She was always spoiled and careless to Dexter. The good news was, that man didn't mind that either.

Dexter stroked the little girl's hair who was whining gently. His smile didn't seem to disappear. Silvia could be spoiled for him because he always treated her well and spoiled her.

"Then, you just choose the brightest and the most beautiful according to you."

"The brightest and most beautiful?" Silvia repeated it while staring at the stars scattered in the sky.

"That ... That ..." Silvia stretched out her hand, her tiny index finger lifted upward while jumping up and down.

She looked at Dexter with a smile that was as bright as her, "Brother, I have chosen my star. There it is. Did you see it?"

The question made Dexter look up at the sky.

"Look at the two stars. They are so close and shine to each other. I'll name them, Dexter and Silvia. Hihihi…" Silvia smiled mischievously.

Dexter frowned. Before she spoke, Silvia had said first, "As we are now, laughing at each other," she added.

Dexter also laughed at the statement of the 10-year-old girl. His laughter and smile were seen as replies to Silvia's words.

"Brother, now I know why the star is there when the sky is dark."

Dexter looked at her seriously, "Why?" he asked.

"Because the stars are destined to accept the darkness. And the dark sky has been destined to need stars to be its lights."

Dexter only smiled. It was a common statement, without meaning, but it was the truth.

~ Off ~

"If the star is dim, the sky will be mourned, and how dark it will be."

Silvia continued the line while steadily staring at the stars before finally regaining her senses.

Silvia shook her head, trying to erase the black mist that was filling her mind. Remove all remaining shadows from the flashback story earlier.

Her chest felt a little tight, her heart was sour, her nose was hot. Damn it! She cried again! She cursed herself

Now that her brightest star had become someone else's star, its light must also only shine to illuminate others. While her? Living without light, darker and darker.

The phone continued, but no one spoke. Edrei knew she had brought up her best friend's old wound. Silvia had always loved talking about stars and attributing them to Dexter.
