With DX sitting by her side, Dr. Phillip started the process to perform the ultrasound. He applied the gel on her exposed belly before placing the ultrasound transducer on it.
When Kai Xin winced slightly from the contact, DX asked nervously, "Are you alright? Should we stop?"
Shaking her head, she reassured him, "It's just a little colder than I expected. Don't worry. I'm fine..."
They did not say anything while Dr. Phillip moved the ultrasound transducer around. After a while, the doctor pointed to the screen and said softly, "Look...That's your baby..."
Still holding her hand, DX leaned in closer to take a good look at the little figure on the screen. When he saw the fetus moved, he felt a weird tingling feeling in his heart. He was already protective of it when he merely suspected that Kai Xin was pregnant. Now that he was looking at it, his desire to protect only grew bigger.
With a smile and a voice so low that it was borderline a whisper, he murmured, "That's our baby..."
He was speaking to no one in particular but Kai Xin heard him and gave him a squeeze. She felt the same way that he did since it was their first time witnessing the life that they created with someone they loved.
At that moment, when he saw their child moved as if it was saying hello, DX felt so glad that he had her in his life. Kissing the back of her hand, in a gravelly voice as if he was holding back his tears, he added, "Thank you for loving me..."
Dr. Phillip looked at DX and wondered if his friend had always been such a sentimental man. While he continued moving the transducer around, he thought, "I have seen so many expressions reflected on his face in this week alone than in the last 30 years."
Kai Xin smiled at her man before turning to Dr. Phillip. Since this was her first time attempting to carry a child to term, she had plenty of questions to ask the doctor.
"Dr. Phillip, I don't feel 4 months pregnant. I don't even look like I'm four months pregnant. If not for DX's observation skills, I might have accidentally lost the baby through my ignorance. Is there anything wrong with me? Is the baby's growth alright?"
"Don't worry about it. Different women have different symptoms. I know of a woman whose bump didn't show until she's at least 6 months pregnant..." answered Dr. Phillip.
He kept his eyes on the screen to check for any anomaly while he continued to answer her, "...You are tall and your physique is quite toned, so that might have contributed to the lack of bump...Erm...By the way..."
Dr. Phillip stopped his train of thoughts to ask the couple, "Do you guys want to know the gender?"
Even though no one could tell, DX was actually very excited when Dr.Phillip asked. He had been thinking about it ever since he had a hunch that she was pregnant. Naturally, he wanted to know so that he could know what to expect and what to prepare for.
However, the baby was theirs and not his alone. He felt that it was only right for him to ask for her opinion as well and so, that was what he did next.
"I did the easy and fun part...You are the one who has to carry the child...Whatever you want, you are speaking for the both of us..."
This was the question that she was thinking about when DX entered the room earlier. She knew that despite what he said, DX would love to know about the gender of the baby.
To her, the knowledge would not change anything she felt about the baby. She would love it just the same and she would still be excited about his or her arrival. Hence, she decided to make DX happy by telling the doctor, "We are ready to know the baby's gender, Dr. Phillip."
"Alright then..." said Dr. Phillip. He loved it whenever his clients came in as a couple and they treated each other with love and respect.
It also comforted him that DX was not as cold to her as he was to all his ex-girlfriends. With a smile, he continued from where he left off, "So, the baby is healthy and from the looks of it, SHE is going to be one strong and healthy baby..."
"That's great. I just want-" Kai Xin stopped herself from continuing. When she looked at DX, he was looking at her as well. They both heard it and they both knew that they had the same question.
Without further ado, they asked in unison, "She?!"
