It was Zed's voice. He hurt Juan sorely. His words made Juan extremely gloomy and unable to hold back his unhappiness from showing.
"Why do you say that, Zed? I just said that I like Chinese food so that Jean does not have to worry about my likes and dislikes. But why would you say something as hurtful as I'm not a normal human being?"
"Why? You just said you're not a picky eater, right? So, besides pigs, are there any other appropriate examples to describe you?" Zed finished off with his barbs and walked over to Jean, pretending his small altercation with Juan had not happened. He smiled at her and took the seat next to her. Soon enough, he was busy enjoying his meal of sandwiches.
"You..." By the time Juan could get that Zed was mocking him, he had already become too flustered. Confused and annoyed, Juan had no wits about him to come up with a rebuttal.
Jean, on the other hand, had gotten used to such arguments between the two men. She knew that as soon as they would meet, sparks would fly.
After silence fell upon the room, Jean looked at Zed and then immediately recalled, "I thought you went to office. Since that's not true, where did you go?"
"I went to the bank. Juan, this is for you." Zed finished his sandwich and wiped his mouth and hands with a napkin. He then took out a cheque from his pocket and put it on the table in front of Juan.
Juan glanced casually at first at the piece of paper kept in front of him. He was anticipating another cruel joke already. But then he read the figure on the cheque. His jaw dropped. Looking at Zed, he asked, "What do you mean by this? Are you giving me such a huge sum because you have too much money and don't know how to spend it?"
Zed swallowed his last bite, and looked at Juan. "Well, this money is for you. You can spend it anyway you like. You can think of this as me buying shares of your entertainment company in China. Will this suffice? Or should I pay you more?"
Jean, who had been a witness to this turn of events, was now suddenly taken aback by Zed's offer to buy shares of Juan's company. Immediately she looked at Zed in surprise with knit eyebrows.
As soon as Juan heard Zed's offer, he too choked up on his bite. After a bout of violent cough, he looked at Zed and asked, "What are you talking about, Zed? Do you want to invest in the branch of my entertainment company? Are you crazy?"
He could see from the corner of his eye Jean nod at this ever so slightly.
She too thought of Zed's decision as crazy.
"No, to be exact, I mean the branch office in China," Zed looked at Juan and corrected him impassively.
"Puff..." Juan almost gagged again but then looked at Zed to gauge the seriousness of all this. After a sigh, he asked in a weak voice, "Is there any difference?"
Zed looked at Juan square
“Who does she think she is? I won’t marry her even if she is the last woman on earth,” said Hiram Rong.
“Marry into a family with tens of billions of assets? How lucky I am! I won’t be so foolish as to break off the engagement. At worst, I can receive money as part of the divorce settlement,” said Rachel Ruan.
Their great-grandfathers made a pact about their engagement a hundred years ago...
ok. Clearly, there was no room for discussion. "No. Anyway, you have to accept this cheque today."
Juan saw Zed's firm attitude. He still had to keep up his pretence of not giving in to Zed. So he looked at Jean with his big blue eyes in as sorry a way as he could. He implored Jean to intervene and help on his behalf.
Instead, Jean took his sorry look to heart and made a case for Zed to Juan. She said, "Juan, you can actually think about Zed's offer in a different way. Once Zed invests and becomes your partner, you'll have more occasions to see of him in the future. Don't you want to see Zed more often in your life?"
Juan shook his head and smiled wryly. "No, no, this is not how you should see it. The nature of this is different. Zed, if you really think of me as your good friend, take the cheque back. We don't need anything to come between our friendship — be it money or business. I assure you and Jean that I will take good care of Avery and will not treat her unfairly ever."
It was rare to see Juan hold his side in the argument with this much of conviction. Zed involuntarily sighed and said, "I'm not worried about that. Well, you definitely know it's Jean who paired Moore and Avery up. We wanted them to stay in China, so I called you for help. After all, you are more familiar with the entertainment industry than I am. But my investment will just stay at the level of money. How the company operates or what plans it has for the future all come under you and your team. I will not interfere in any of it.
This is just a pure investment. Trust me. You still have to be in-charge of this alone. Juan, I know that the entertainment industry is booming right now. Well, don't you want to get me in and let me have a share of the upsurge?"
Zed looked at Juan and asked with a hint of humor in his words.
"I..." Juan looked back at Zed puzzled.
