Chapter 164 - Grezia Academy Tournament

Before the day I went straight to adventurer's guild and met with the temporary guild master, to post a search quest for Rosie even though quests like that usually don't get done, but at least it would give me some hope that a search for her is being done, and then later during the day, Gale was given an honorary funeral and was recognized as a hero who died protecting the kingdom. The day of the tournament has finally arrived, and since I'm an instructor at the academy, I'm not excused from attending it, which I'm already familiar with, since I already witnessed tournaments during my time at Corpus academy, I sigh.

"I already know that all the students who have the Hero's Blessing are going to be in the last phases of tournament."

I walk towards the seating areas where all the instructors of the academy are at, and as I take a seat, the magical trainer, with long curly light brown hair, Jessie says to me.

"you have missed all the preliminaries and we are

already in the last thirty two contenders."

I think to myself.

"well it's not like I missed much, usually all the strong students, fly through the preliminaries with ease."

I reply.

"I had urgent matters to attend to, so it couldn't be helped."

she whispers, trying not to be heard by the other instructors.

"was it the cult?"

I nod.

"yes, but it's fine now, we managed to deal huge blow by capturing and imprisoning one of their strongest members."

she responds.

"you always find ways to surprise me, especially since you only rely on physical strength."

she looks at Ying in who is sitting at a distance with admiration in her eyes and says.

"whenever he always has positive things to say about you, even though you don't possess the Hero's blessing."

I smile and downplay.

"whatever he says about me is just him over exaggerating what I did."

she asks curiously as the first two students are announced to start off the first match of the round of sixteen.

"what exactly did you do?"

I reply still trying to downplay what I did

"I faced off against him once before and landed a lucky hit."

surprised by this she replies.

"like I said, you are just full of surprises."

we watch the first match and see them use their unique magic against each other, but they don't bother trying to fight physically even if they are in close proximity, I then think to myself frustrated.

"I've trained them on how to fight each other, in close quarter combat."

she notices my frustration and says.

"I know you got results over there at Corpus, you just got to be patient and your hard work will yield results."

I sigh.

"sounds like you are cheering my on."

she responds with confidence.

"maybe, but it doesn't mean that any students will win this tournament using your training."

I look on to the match and see that is over.

"oh it's done now."

she chuckles and boasts.

"another win with magic."

Cecile and another student step up to fighting grounds, and I think to myself.

"at least I'll get to see first hand, how students struggle against him."

the moment the match ended as quickly as it started, I then ask Jessie.

"does Cecile always start with the plasma beam spell?"

she nods.

"yeah, he's been defeating everyone at the start of the match with that spell."

I sigh.

"it's no good, if he depends on one spell in battles then he won't adapt a good counter attack, if someone manages to avoid that attack."

she replies as the next two students step up for the match.

"you have point there, but the problem is that the only ones who ever got him to push himself far beyond his comfort zone are you and Ying."

I think to myself.

I reply.

"I see."

the matches keep going, and then as Paula steps on the fighting grounds, Jessie says.

"now she is an interesting one, even though her magic isn't suited for combat, she still managed to make it through the preliminaries."

I ask.

"what makes you say that?"

she replies.

"I've seen her magic, it's useless unless she can get close to an opponent."

"I do feel bad for her, she made it to the round of sixteen only to be defeated.

I shush her.

"the match hasn't even begun, and you are already saying she lost."

the match begins, and Jessie is immediately surprised that Paula was dodging every spell attack that was thrown her way.

"whoa, was she always this quick on her feet?"

I think to myself.

"I was always aware on her improvements, but I didn't think she had improved this fast."

Paula closes in on her opponent and lands a strong haymaker, knocking him down to the ground, and then turning him into stuffed toy upon touching her, I then think to myself in excitement.

"holy shit, that is incredible."

"that is a very interesting and unexpected turn of events."

but I just smile, feeling proud that she took what she learned from me and applied in a fight.

"good job Paula that is how it is done."

as the matches continue, with Cecile and Paula dominating, I think back to when Hope finally starting giving me trouble in our sparring training

sessions, to the point that I had to stop going eady on her, and as I finish reminiscing about that, the final match between Cecile and Paula was about to start, and excitement was in the air, due to Paula's overwhelming performance combining her magic attacks and physical prowess, I overhear an instructor nearby.

"was she always this strong?"

I hear another.

"it must be because of that freak Belfaust who has been training the fifth years."

I look back and snap at them.

"got a problem with me?"

they keep their mouths shut and just shake their head, I then look back towards the fighting stage and see that the match is about to begin, where both Cecile and Paula are just anxiously staring each other down, waiting for the match to officially start, so then I take this opportunity to shout.

"come on Paula, you've got this!"

she looks to my direction, and smiles while waving at me, I then settle down as the match starts and immediately the whole arena is shocked as Paula dodges Cecile's plasma beam spell, Jessie then makes a comment.

"this is unbelievable, she just did what the others couldn't do."

Cecile visible looks bothered that she dodged it and shouts continuously.

"plasma beam!"

but Paula dodges each one with ease, Jessie then asks me.

"did she learn that from you?"

I reply.

"I thought her and the others to be quick on their feet, when it comes to dodging attacks."

the match continues with Cecile using different attacks, only to have Paula dodge them, I then think to myself.

"she is not putting up, any defenses against his attacks, she is just depending on her dodging skills."

Cecile gets increasingly frustrated and shouts.

"plasma prison!"

trapping Paula in his plasma made prison, I then think to myself.

"how will you get yourself out of this predicament, Paula?"

I see a sense of satisfaction come down at Cecile's face while Paula calmly closes her eyes

and chants to herself, and as she turns herself into a small stuffed toy version of herself, and escapes the plasma prison, and after she gets out the whole arena goes wild, cheering on Paula,

even I clap and say.

"good job kid, you've already proved to everyone that you shouldn't be looked down on."

but it doesn't end there, because Cecile panics and starts firing off many spells to create some distance between them, while Paula chants another spell, still dodging them and she once again shocks the whole arena as multiple stuff animals surround Cecile, and start climbing all over him, I then think to myself.

"this girl was severely underestimated."

Paula approaches Cecile who is fighting off the stuffed toys that are all over him and gets the win after turning Cecile into a stuffed toy, I then smile.

"okay, now this was worth watching the tournament."

Paula returns Cecile back to normal and she is officially announced as the winner of this year Grezia Academy Tournament, I then get up from my seat and start heading out, where I run into both Hope and Sarah who have been getting along great, Hope says to me. "I was hoping that Cecile would have won, but I'm glad that Paula ended up winning."

I roll my eyes and ask Sarah.

"who were you going for?"

she blushes.

"I was going for Cecile, he's so handsome."

Hope nods and giggles.

"yeah I know right."

I just sigh.

"well make sure you two get enough sleep, so that we can go together to Arce, early in the morning."

they both wave goodbye and head towards the dorm, and then I run into a defeated Cecile who looks at me with milky white eyes and then walks away with his eyes turning back to normal, I shake my head and say to myself.

"easy, Collin you are just seeing things."

but then an excited voice shouts at me from behind.

"Mr. Belfaust did you watch me beat him?"

I turn to see Paul rushing me for a hug, but I just do a sidestep to avoid it and reply.

"I did watch and I think did a great job."

she then says.

"I'm going to miss you, since tomorrow will be the last day for all the fifth years."

I respond.

"well I'm not going anywhere, I'll be here for the foreseeable future."

she then sneaks in a kiss on the cheek and waves goodbye.

"I got you, see you Mr. Belfaust."

I groan and think to myself as I head home.

"she is one weird girl."

I then think about the eyes Cecile had and wonder.

"there is no way, he can have the same eyes that Daurl had."

I shake my head and get welcomed home by both Ellena and Celeste, where I go to bed with an unshakeable, uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.
