—Wanderer’s True Purpose
Drako Yau was currently headed for the transitional zone between sub-Level 20 levelling zones and the Highlands of John.
Nothing but trees, lakes, and the path leading to the Highlands of John was within sight, with not a single monster to be seen. Most casual players chose to chill around at such places because they were safe and had great natural environments, which were rare in the actual world.
As he travelled towards the designated coordinates, Drako Yau entered a forest. He didn’t equip his usual gear, especially his iconic spear and Mask of the Hidden Dragon, and only put on simple Common gear. After removing those iconic equipment, no one would associate him who looked like a newbie with the almighty Mask of Yoda.
He slowly traversed through the forest and saw a little hut by a lake. After double checking the coordinates and making sure it was the right place, he went over to the hut.
Knock knock.
The knocking sounds weren’t very noticeable because it was a thatched door made of straw and reed. After receiving no response in a little while, Drako Yau knocked on the door again. He repeated this for five times and finally decided to try and open the door with a gentle push.
A massive force surged from behind the door. As if a flying spaceship had run into him, he was sent flying away until he slammed onto a tree. The tree shook violently, its leaves rustling and tumbling down from its branches.
The door slowly opened as it creaked, and a middle-aged man came out from the hut. After stretching himself out, he yawned and finally noticed Drako Yau who slumped onto a tree.
‘What’s wrong with you?’ (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
‘Tried to open the door, got blasted away.’
The man suddenly realised what had just happened and said with a chuckle, ‘I tinkered the door with a few tricks to ensure my sleeping quality and to prevent people from bothering me. You, really… knock on the door! You can’t even do a simple knock?’
‘Ah, nevermind.’ The man generously came over to give Drako Yau a hand and said, ‘Follow me.’
Drako Yau was speechless as he touched his back which was experiencing intense pain. What is this rotten luck!
Anyways, he followed the man into the thatched hut. It was very compact with minimal decorations and furniture. The so-called bed was simply a pile of straw lying on the floor. However, Drako Yau wasn’t too bothered by the simplistic hut, for he had slept at places which were a lot worse. He still remembered the time when he had carelessly fallen asleep out in the wilderness on a boulder and almost got bitten by a venomous snake. Comparatively speaking, having a place with a roof and shelter was like heaven.
‘I’m Chris.’ The man sat on the ‘straw bed’ and signalled Drako Yau to sit on the floor. ‘I’m your… right, instructor.’ He frowned as though the word ‘instructor’ was an unwelcome monster.
Drako Yau nodded and sat comfortably on the floor. He introduced himself by simply saying, ‘Drako Yau.’
Seeing Drako Yau act neither too humbly or too haughtily, Chris was satisfied as he nodded. ‘Hm, not bad at all. The old geezer has trained you well, apart from being punctual. How could you make me wait so long!’ He sounded like he was complaining about it, which sent chills through Drako Yau.
Did this guy pull off the trick on the door as a punishment because I’m late?
‘Ahaha, I’m just kidding, look at you! Haha, don’t be so scared.’ Chris laughed heartily and gave Drako Yau a heavy pat on the shoulder.
However, Drako Yau only shuddered even more in his mind. This unscrupulous guy…
‘Right, now onto the important stuff. About your class progression.’ Chris lifted his right arm and flicked his fingers, projecting rays of light from his fingers which filled the entire hut.
The projected images dazzled Drako Yau’s eyes. As he looked closely at the images, he realised they were all classes and a video of a person of that class. Soon, he was attracted by a particular set of images because the skills were familiar ones.
‘Magic swordsman, a swordsman who is adept at both swordsmanship and magic. The class excels at infusing magic into physical attack skills, making it an all-rounded and multi-functional class.’
He also saw many other classes: Dancer, Pugilist, Demon Wolf Hero, Blade Master, Taoist… Every hidden class was fully revealed before him. Chris grinned and looked at Drako Yau while saying, ‘Pick one.’
‘What do you mean?’ Drako Yau was a bit, no, very confused.
Chris was just as confused after hearing the question. ‘Don’t tell me… you still haven’t figured out the true purpose of the Wanderer class?’
True purpose? What sort of purpose is this trash class supposed to have!
Chris shook his head upon noticing Drako Yau’s expression.
‘Kid, don’t act like you’re the victim when you stand to gain so much. The Wanderer class looks weak, and it is indeed very weak. But it also serves as a great foundation. Look closely at its skill tree, there’s increased movement speed, increased basic attack damage, healing… And most importantly, weapon mastery.’ Chris smiled and continued, ‘Because Wanderer is a basic class which can progress into any hidden class.’
Drako Yau was stunned. Seeing his composure falter brought a satisfied smile to Chris’ face. ‘You heard it right. Wanderer’s class progression is any other class of your choice, which is why weapon mastery is so crucial. Because weapon mastery includes every weapon type, wanderers can equip any weapon, and that means there are infinite possibilities.
‘Whichever hidden class a wanderer progresses into will also hold the same weapon mastery advantage. How many points have you invested into weapon mastery now? Is your passive buff at 10 per cent now? 20? Try adding that to a class with active skills.’
Drako Yau thought of Danting. The magic swordsman was already very strong; what if his damage increased by 20 per cent?
Chris also chimed in to remind him, ‘When you max out weapon mastery, the passive buff will be 30 per cent. That, is the true strength of wanderers.’
Zephyrwolf, clearly dispirited, was covered in dust and filth as he drank a Health Potion, while his demon wolf king walked beside him. Sensing its summoner’s gaze, the demon wolf king whined at a low voice and snuggled its head against Zephyrwolf. He smiled and rubbed its soft, purple fur and continued onwards.
Back when they travelled through the Highlands of John to defeat Nin, there were five of them to deal with monsters throughout the journey. However, he finally got a good taste of how tormenting the Highlands of John was when he travelled alone.
It was indeed a levelling region for players above Level 20. As he was barely Level 20 and had yet to complete his class progression, soloing the place was pushing his limits.
It had been an hour and a half since he journeyed while taking care of tough monsters on the way. If he hadn’t improved greatly after following Drako Yau lately, he would have fallen long ago.
Soon, he saw his destination before him. It was one of the levelling zones in the Highlands of John, Demon Wolf Canyon. He let out a long sigh and sat on the ground to rest and sort things out.
After a while, Zephyrwolf slowly stood up. He didn’t carelessly proceed because of the dozen pairs of blood red wolven eyes ahead. If he walked any further, he would be within their attack range. Sensing the demon wolves’ hostile gazes, Zephyrwolf smiled smugly and took out a summoning token from his item bag, the one with the word ‘Army’ engraved onto it. A metallic scent and unyielding aura shrouded the token. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
‘Sorry little puppies, I’m cheating.’
The summoning token shot into the air and disappeared after dissipating into streaks of light. Soon, the sounds of war drums and horns reverberated throughout the entire area.
‘Who summons us to battle!’
