That night Debra has some very troubling dreams . She is at the park with her friends. She sees Aisling babysitting. Her friends want to go eat so she walks over to take the money. The strangest thing is that she is watching herself take the money . Confused she shifts in the chair. Finally she goes into a deep sleep. Not knowing what is about to begin.
She is in Aisling's room ironing shirts and her Dad comes in.
"Aisling I need these also for tomorrow. Make sure they are clean and ironed. I'm getting paid extra so do a good job." She walks over and takes the clothes to the basement to wash. Passing through the kitchen Dude and Debra are getting a snack . Neither speak to her or even acknowledge her. She gets the laundry started and heads back upstairs. They made a big mess in the kitchen. She figures she will clean it in the morning. Heading up to finish the first basket of shirts . She meats Debra on the stairs.
"Make sure there is an extra five dollars in my lunch bag tomorrow. I have a football game with my friends." Just nodding Aisling continues upstairs. Debra feels her face she is crying why? She doesn't understand this sadness she is feeling. She hears her father screaming and smashing things in the kitchen. Rushing down stairs he grabs her by the hair.
"What is this mess ?why is it not cleaned up already?" Aisling is crying out in pain. She looks to Debra for help but Debra just snickers at her.
"I was cleaning the shirts and ironing them for tomorrow. They had a snack so I figured I would clean after I was done." She whispers. Debra feels a horrible pain in her chest and is crying out, but no one is coming to help her. She is nearly paralyzed with the pain in her body. Her head of filled with her screams of pain. She watches her Dad shove Aisling against the sink and grab the bottle off the counter. Slamming the back door as he leaves. Aisling sinks to the floor and cries. "Why am I here? Why did you save me God just to let them hate me?" Looking at her it feels like her insides are being ripped apart. Debra is calling for her to help her but she is ignoring her. Debra sees a person come to sit beside Aisling and just hold her. It's not a living person it's a ghost. When Aisling falls asleep in the kitchen floor the pain Debra feels subsided. She feels so desolate inside that it's like she is just a shell . Like there is nothing left inside of her. Her body is getting ice cold. Walking over to Aisling she notices there is blood on the floor. Aisling didn't go to sleep her father hurt her and she was passed out from pain. She had a piece of glass stuck in her side. Debra screams but no one can hear her. Her father walks in the door and yells for her to get up. He stinks of liquor, noticing the blood on her shirt he goes and calls Audis to come right away.
Debra is getting colder by the second feeling tired and worn out. She hears her uncle arrive and he begins to help Aisling. Once he gets her stitched up he carries her upstairs and lays her on the bed. He pulls a bag of red stuff from his bag. He takes a needle and sticks her then connected some tubes . While he sits with her their aunt is cleaning the kitchen. When she is done she comes upstairs and gives Aisling a warm basin bath. You can hear uncle screaming at my Dad outside. He knows he is to blame. They stay the rest of the night beside Aisling. Debra sits in the corner shivering with cold. Begging God don't let her die.
Debra opens her eyes and she sees Aisling packing a bag. Her heart is pounding like it is going to jump right out of her chest. She goes down stairs there is Uncle John waiting. They drive to the hospital. There Aisling sits beside their fathers bed. The Dr comes in and begins to tell her what needs to be done. If her father is to survive he needs a liver transplant. Since she is the one who is the best match. Debra sits for a minute and thinks. Why didn't she remember Aisling doing the transplant?
Her and Sam walk in and they are gushing. Sam just asked her to marry him. They are going to see his grandmother that weekend with his family. Debra for some reason seeing herself being happy is not happy. Why did her heart just sink to the ground . The couple walks out without even saying good bye to Aisling. That night it's very dark and cold. Aisling is alone hooked up to tubes and monitors. She is crying because no one is there with her. Then just like before a man comes to sit with her. Beside him is a woman though Debra can't make out what she looks like.
Debra begins to cry . Her heart is hurting so bad and no one can even see her it seems.the sadness is overwhelming. The man looks in her direction but says nothing . Oh Aisling why did I not know you were always in so much pain. Debra wakes up and her face and hair is wet from her tears. She stares out of the Rv window and cries the rest of the night only falling into a peaceful sleep in the early morning hours. When she wakes up she heads inside only to meet her brother just outside of the door.
"So how did you sleep?" He looks at her send sees the puffy red eyes. He figures she slept about as well as he did.
"How about you?" Looking at him
"I had nightmares yesterday on the way here . I thought sleeping in the house I would be able to sleep . Nope I continued to have nightmares so I thought. Nope just memories I never realized how bad things were for Aisling. I didn't care since I always got what I wanted. " he kicks the gravel in the driveway.
"Me either did you know Aisling gave Dad a piece of her liver?"
He looks at her and rolled his eyes.
"Yes she had surgery about two months before he died. I was away at a camping trip with some friends. I called to check on her once I think. Why didn't you know?" Debra shakes her head.
"Sam and I had just gotten engaged and went to visit his grandmother. "
Dude looked at her in shock.
"I went with my friends because she said it would be ok since you were going to be there. You mean you didn't even pay attention enough to know. I know I ignored her a lot but I thought you at least paid attention and knew." He sounds angry especially after all he remembered of what she dealt with.
"I didn't until I remembered last night. We do not deserve forgiveness or compassion from her. We ignored her being abused and treated her like a slave . I'm so ashamed how can I face her?" They hear Sam come out of the Rv. Turning to him to say good morning. They see his face it's like a bomb ready to blow.
"I am not sure what to say. I thought I married a kind and loving person. We have been together for most of our lives. If I had known that you were so self absorbed, that you didn't even know your sister was having surgery. A surgery to try to save your dad I don't think I would have married you. I remember we went to the hospital that day. You never even acknowledged Aisling you only spoke to her unconscious father. You should have known. Going to visit my grandmother could have waited. Your right neither of you deserve forgiveness. I'm not even sure you should represent her mother at this wedding now. You two have a lot to think about." He slams the door closed and goes inside to check on the twins.
