Dinner was soon done, and as Mary walked into the kitchen while carrying a tray of freshly baked delicacies, she was almost startled when she saw Luke run towards her and grab it from her hands.
She had been busy in the Kitchen this whole time, so she hadn't been able to see the interesting things that had happened during dinner.
Hence, when she saw Luke act like this, she felt that it was slightly strange.
However, what the CEO said made it even stranger.
"The meal was wonderful, but I've taken the liberty to order some dessert. It should have arrived. Give me a moment."
"Wow, you shouldn't have! All right, we will clear the table. Mom, why don't you help Luke, and then, we can sit together!"
Saying so, Liz stood up and took the CEO's plate before going to the kitchen.
Will, on the other hand, had realized just like Luke that they were currently dead even right now.
Thankfully, he had already planned to bring dessert beforehand.
As he walked to the door, he and Luke shared a look which indicated that both of them knew that this was the finale.
Heck, both of them didn't even know what exactly was going on here, but they were determined to win.
Liz, on the other hand, was feeling very happy as she had just had an excellent dinner along with superb conversation.
All the thoughts from before had flown out of her head, and right now, she was just waiting for dessert to be the cherry on top of this cake of a day.
She had just gone into the kitchen to put the last of the plates, but as she got back to the dining table, she stopped in place, startled.
"Mr. Will, that's a lot of stuff! You shouldn't have! And Luke, you made this much?!"
Standing beside each other on the other side of the table, the two men were holding a variety of desserts.
In Will's hands were two large boxes of cupcakes and pies, whereas Luke was holding that tray which Liz hadn't observed before.
On it were an assortment of choux buns and pies.
She had actually thought that she was full, but on seeing them, she felt slightly hungry again.
Dessert plates were already on the table, so she just sat down and motioned for them to sit too.
However, she could never have expected what would happen next.
Striding quickly, both men positioned themselves on two sides of her before heaping her plate with the desserts.
Luke would put an apple pie, and then Will would put a cupcake on top of that.
Luke would pick out a choux bun and say "This has been cooked perfectly!" and Will would place another cupcake beside it and say "These are from the finest patisserie in New York, custom made on my order. Try them."
As she was looking at the rising pile on her plate, she didn't notice that both men were actually looking into each other's eyes while doing this.
Unwittingly, this had turned into an all-out competition without them even realizing it.
The pile started rising higher and higher until…
"MR. WILL! LUKE! STOP!"
As a scream sounded between them, both of them looked down with panic to see that all the food had actually fallen on Liz, who was looking at them both as if she couldn't believe her eyes.
She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but she just humphed and got up and left to change.
As they saw her leave, both men actually glared at each other for a few moments, as if blaming the other for what had happened.
However, the next second, they had both turned away.
Will had actually only done this because he saw Luke walk to her plate, but right now, seeing the clear draw that had taken place, he was slightly irritated.
He wasn't perfect, and one of the things which ticked him off was losing.
Hence, without assessing what he was doing, he took out his phone, dialed a number and spoke just loud enough so that Luke would hear him.
"Make sure my P.A. is with me in all meetings. Yes, hand over her paperwork to someone else."
Luke, on the other hand, was even more pissed as dessert had been supposed to be his thing.
Yet, in the end, they had pissed Liz off, and he knew that she was going to have a 'talk' later.
The draw irritated him too, but when he heard the call the CEO placed, it ticked him off even more.
Hence, he first looked around with frustration before spotting Mary who was looking at everything with a puzzled expression on her face.
Without thinking, he said, "Hey Mary, the picnic over the weekend with all 4 of us is still on, right?"
As Mary nodded instinctively, he said, "Good. A full day with no work to distract anyone. It's going to be great." Before striding into the kitchen.
Hearing this, the CEO only said "The meal was wonderful, Ma'am," in a subdued tone before heading to the hall.
Suddenly finding herself alone near the dining table, Mary didn't know what to think.
What the hell was going on with her daughter?
