"LUKE! What was that?! Why were you behaving so unusually?"
Soon after dinner, the CEO had left as it had already gotten late in the night.
He had just thanked Liz, Mary, and Luke and had said that it was a great dinner.
Holding his ear, Liz had just taken Luke to her room before pushing him against one wall and asking this question.
Raising his hands in a gesture of peace, Luke began to say, "Liz, now wait, I can explain…"
"That was my boss! First, you bribed Derek, who clearly shouldn't even know what a bribe is-"
"Oh, please, the kid takes bribes every day. Didn't he take a bribe from you just the other day?"
"Hmm. Point taken. Ok, next, you overloaded that plate as if you were competing! What was that about? And just the whole time, it felt as if you were trying to show something to me! You can't distract me completely with the food, Luke!"
As Liz said these words while folding her hands and glaring at Luke, he actually sighed and just looked at her.
She had changed into a light orange dress and her hair was tied into a casual ponytail.
Beautiful. All he wished was that he could take that waist into his hands and tell her what he felt.
But, no. He couldn't risk it. He had had these feelings for so long, but it was clearly not the time to put them out, as it might result in Liz pushing him away.
So, he chose something else.
"Liz, you know how much he hurt you. I…just didn't want that to happen it again. Don't tell me it won't! You can't guarantee it, and you know that. I don't know what he feels for you, but by acting like that, I wanted him to back off. Is it too much to wish for my friend's happiness?"
Liz had been about to open her mouth to object, but she was shot down by Luke's argument which actually made sense.
Indeed, when she had fallen apart, he had been there to help her, so he would know exactly how much she had been affected.
So, instead of continuing to berate him, she only looked down with a pondering expression on his face.
Knowing that he had salvaged the situation without damaging his own image, Luke sighed with relief but got an idea which made him smile a little mischievously.
"Liz, we aren't kids anymore, but if we were, you know that I would have acted the same. In fact, I would-"
Bending forward, he suddenly pecked Liz's cheek, who could only look up with slight shock on seeing Luke act like so.
Luke, on the other hand, was trying hard not to freeze.
Indeed, they had had a phase during childhood where they kissed each other on their cheeks, but it was when they were barely 12 years old, when they knew almost nothing about the world.
So, now, when he kissed a grown-up Liz, even though it was on the cheek, a rush of sensations enveloped him.
Her cheeks were so soft, making her skin felt so wonderful on his lips that he wished that he could go back and kiss her again and again.
She had also unconsciously started to blush while looking at him, so she looked so gorgeous right now that the urge to pull her into his arms came over him again.
NO! No!
He had never been so bold before, and he honestly didn't know what had bolstered his courage even now, but he knew there was a line.
"Do that and take all your troubles away! But I can't, so I'll just keep trying in my own way. We're family, Liz, and I can never stop looking out for you, whether you like it or not. If you do, good. If you don't, bite me."
Leaving these words, Luke sidestepped Liz and walked out of the room.
However, at the door, he paused for a bit and turned back, sighing and slumping tiredly as if resisting those urges had taken everything from him.
Liz, on the other hand, didn't know what to think.
On one hand, Luke had a point, the CEO had hurt her, and was now acting a little bit weirdly, which could be interpreted in the way that Luke had.
On the other, there was the fact that seeing her best friend act like this actually felt a little nice to watch.
When he had kissed her just now, it had felt…really nice.
Well, it was Luke, and they had indeed done this as kids.
She didn't know what to think, but right now, she felt so tired, and she didn't want to think.
Hence, still using her finger to fondly rub the spot where Luke's lips had touched her cheek, she fell on the bed and went to sleep.
