Chapter 32: Give me Kara! How dare you!
Jason closed the door to Kara's room but not before he watched her for a minute or two. Her little body safely tucked inside the blanket. She was taking a nap after a well deserved meal and bath.
Now, he was finding it difficult to let her out of his sight, except it was impossible to keep watch over her every minute of the day not when she was a world away from him.
No. He had to do something. He has to convince Naya to let him take her.
In Nigeria, she will be safe. He can watch over her there. He can protect his girl there.
Kara stirred softly. Jason wanted to go to her but it suddenly occurred to him that he hasn't seen his wife in hours and it was almost dark.
"Good night, sleepy head"
He gently closed the door and almost bumped into his mother. She was in her nightie that almost looked like a designer evening flimsy gown. With her well scrubbed oval face and brown eyes, she was a beauty at fifty two years old probably because she looked thirty years old.
Elixir had a slim body and beautiful features. To him, she was just his mother. A regular normal looking mother but every boy he knew including his best friend, Chike said otherwise. To Jason, the jury was still out.
"Hey, baby"
"Hi, Mom. Hope you are adjusting well. I know your room is not up to the luxury you are used to"
"It's a nice little house. It will do" Elixir replied.
Jason wanted to point out it was an eight bedroom with individual bathroom duplex. It was hardly little but he didn't. After all, the woman lived in a mansion.
"Where is your wife?"
"I...I have no idea. I was on my way to find her" Jason's eye darted towards the door leading outside.
"I hope you know you guys have a lot to talk about. She is an Angel for putting up with you. A lot of women include myself would have opt for a quick divorce and without a prenup, she could walk away with almost half of your money. Talk to her. Calm her fears"
Jason was clueless. What fears was he supposed to calm? It was Kara that went missing not Mckenna.
"What fears, mother?"
Elixir touched his cheeks before shaking her head. "Oh my clueless boy. You have a long way to go"
Elixir walked away leaving a confused Jason behind.
"What fears, mother?"
Okay. It was settled. Women were confusing. Jason went outside to find his wife and found her on the playground sitting on a swing.
Mckenna had no idea how long she had been sitting there. Probably hours, it was the only part of the orphanage that didn't suffocate her.
The duplex made her uncomfortable. Questions like 'did my husband fuck another woman on this sofa' kept going through her mind.
The swing was the only place that she could find peace.
"I see you found the swing" Jason's voice startled her.
"Hey" Mckenna turned around and came face to face with her husband.
She was wearing a sleeveless dress. And it was cold outside. Jason took off the shirt he was wearing and placed it on her.
"Thanks, love. How is Kara?"
"Asleep...the little bean put us through hell, didn't she? But that's not important now. How are you? I mean this can't be easy" Jason took the swing next to her and sat down.
"She is a beautiful girl. I see why you like h-her, I mean love her"
Jason Chuckled. "Yep, I love her"
Mckenna turned to look at him briefly before she looked away. But the little look made Jason see what his mother was talking about. His woman was feeling insecure.
"Hey, look at me" He urged her.
Mckenna obliged him.
"What is going on? Let me in, sweetheart. Talk me about how you are feeling"
Mckenna wanted to say nothing but if she did and she swallowed her feelings then when will it end? Kara was there to stay forever and so was Naya.
"I don't know, okay! I just feel like you have this perfect little family here and this other life I didn't know about. I feel like they are your priority and... it's stupid. Forget I said anything" Mckenna ran out of what to say.
But Jason wouldn't let it slide.
"You are right. She...not them, just Kara and yes, she is my priority but baby, so are you. I love you. Every good thing I have in my life happened because I met you"
Mckenna stood up from the swing and let out a breath. She stared out into the open space.
"I just didn't know I would be tied to a woman you used to sleep with for the rest of my life, Jason. It's a lot"
Jason went to her.
"It's Naya. We are just friends. We just have a daughter together, that's all. For crying out loud, I stayed two years in the same duplex with her and we didn't as much as hug. Every thing between Naya and i was over the minute I realized that you are the love of my life" Jason moved closer and held her shoulders "You are the love of my life, don't you get it? There is no one else for me. You are it, forever. I love you, Oma"
He kissed her passionately right there in the open. He wanted to show her how strongly he felt about her. His kiss showed he meant every word.
Mckenna felt it too. She believed him.
"I love you too, Jason. And I hope we will be a real family one day because Kara and i won't be strangers forever but don't force Kara to be mine. Let me earn it. She is smart; with time...we will love each other, okay"
Jason smiled. He was indeed blessed.
"Thank you, Mckenna" He hugged her.
"Yeah, she is a brave little girl. And she needs someone to talk to about Kane. Someone to reassure her that she is safe. She doesn't think you can protect her"
Jason pulled away from her. He still had a smile but it was fading fast.
"What are you talking about? Kara doesn't know about Kane. She can't be scared about what she doesn't know"
Mckenna wondered if she had made a mistake telling Jason about it.
"Except she does, Jason. She knows her biological father wants her dead"
