Chapter 106: unannounced guests.
Mckenna stared at the pregnancy kit she was holding and it was positive. She exhaled. Her heart was beating loudly in her chest.
She was going to be a mom. McKenna's eyes began to tear up almost immediately. She didn't know where she stood in her family but she had a feeling that no matter what, she would always choose her baby.
Mckenna wanted to tell Jason but something held her back. Something she hasn't figured out yet.
She heard footsteps behind her and she hid the pregnancy results.
"Honey, are you coming to bed?" Jason asked her.
He could swear that she was unusually jumpy.
"Are you alright, Mckenna?"
"Uh-huh, I am alright. Just tired all of a sudden" Mckenna answered a little too fast.
"Come here" he opened his arms and she came closer to him.
"Does this feel better?" Jason asked her as he wrapped his arms around her.
"So…better. Come on, let's go to bed"
They walked up to the bedroom. Mckenna didn't sleep a wink. She felt both reluctant and guilty that she was keeping her pregnancy a secret from Jason.
She was keeping a lot of secrets from him. She had to. Mckenna couldn't exactly tell Jason that her father, Jackson was a child killer and she was his accomplice.
She tossed and tossed on the bed for the better part of the night. When she woke up, Jason was looking at her.
He looked like he had been up for a while.
"Hey, beautiful" His dreamy eyes and his soft fingers caressed her face.
"Hey, was I drooling again?" Mckenna asked and blinked.
Jason smiled, his eyes dancing with mischief "You always drool, my love"
"No, I don't. I only do that when I am tired" Mckenna said and stood up.
"Actually you were talking in your sleep" Jason told her and closed his eyes briefly to rest them.
It was morning but he was unwilling to start his day.
"What exactly did I say?" Mckenna was apprehensive.
Did she reveal anything in her sleep? What exactly was she saying and did Jason make sense of any of it?
"Mostly gibberish but you did mention the word baby severally" Jason answered and stood up.
Mckenna had her back to him to hide the look of dread on her face.
"I did?"
She could feel her heart beginning to dance to the beating of a crazy drum.
Jason hugged her from behind.
"I guess you were dreaming of me. I am flattered, sweetheart" Jason kissed her neck.
"It must be" Mckenna took the way out.
It was a Saturday and she had nowhere to be.
Mckenna entered the bathroom to bathe and even though Jason wanted to join her she refused. She couldn't help but think that he would notice her baby bump. It was an irrational fear, since she wasn't showing yet.
"Sorry, I just want the bathroom to myself. How about you check on the girls?" Mckenna suggested and locked the bathroom.
Jason was surprised. Mckenna had never said no to him before about sharing a bathroom. Was it about EJ and Tamara showing up yesterday?
Jason decided to give her time. He opened the door and made his way to his daughters' room. It was empty.
"Kara! EJ!" He yelled for them.
Jason closed the door and he made his way to the living room, down stairs.
"Kara? EJ!" Jason was almost going into a full panic mode when he heard Kara's voice.
"Good morning, Daddy. We are in the kitchen"
Jason followed the sound of the voice to the kitchen and found his daughters and a messy kitchen.
"Good morning, sir" EJ said awkwardly to him.
They were still practically strangers but Jason wanted to change that.
He kissed both their foreheads and then he stood still to take in what was going on exactly.
"Daddy, we are making pancakes for breakfast. Kara says it's Umma's favorite" EJ said and flipped the roundish dough on the pan that weirdly bore a resemblance to pancake.
"You can cook?" Jason sounded surprised.
"Yes. I love cooking. Momma always allows me to make pancakes on Saturdays" EJ answered and returned to the plate containing the pancake mixture.
"Wow, good…I am sure your mother will appreciate it. Good job, sweetheart"
Jason knew that the kitchen was a mess and he would have to clean up after them because even though Mckenna wasn't a neat freak like himself, she would mind the mess.
He started by placing the empty dirty bowl into the sink. He was about to wash them when he heard McKenna's voice.
"Good morning, Mom" Kara said cheerfully "EJ is making you breakfast!"
"Oh really? That's very thoughtful of you, EJ. Thank you" Mckenna smiled at her.
Jason moved closer to reassure her that he would clean the mess himself.
"I will clean up after them, I promise. Sorry for the mess"
Jason hated that he was walking on eggshells around Mckenna when it came to EJ.
"She is making me breakfast. I don't care about the mess" Mckenna rubbed his cheek. "Do you need help, girls?"
"No" EJ was quick to answer.
"Are you sure?" Kara asked her and looked around the messy kitchen. "We really need help!"
"No, we don't. You and Dad can wait in the dining room" EJ told Mckenna.
"Okay. Jason, let's go" Mckenna grabbed his arm and they left.
"Wow…do you think Kara will be like that in three years?" Mckenna asked with a dimmed left eye.
Jason thought about it for a second.
"Probably not…so, don't hold your breath"
The doorbell rang and both of them turned.
"Are you expecting someone this early?" Jason asked his wife but Mckenna shook her head.
He pulled out a seat for her to sit in the dining room and she did.
"I will get it"
Jason walked towards the door. He wondered who would be calling at his house by this time of the morning. It was barely 8:30 a.m and if his gateman allowed the visitor inside then it must be someone they knew.
He opened the door.
"Tammy!"
"Hey"
"What are you doing here?" Jason asked and came out. He locked the door behind him.
"Aren't you going to let me inside?" Tammy asked him with a smile.
"Seriously, why didn't you call that you were coming?" Jason asked her.
"You have my daughter, Jassy. I have never left her with a stranger overnight. I got antsy and I raced over here to see her.
"I am not a stranger. I am her father, Tammy. She is safe with me" Jason reminded her.
Tammy exhaled. She closed her eyes briefly. "I know! I know! I just didn't have anything else to do. I don't have any friends in Nigeria and my grandparents are dead. My parents are not here. I thought we should catch up, Jason. I have missed you"
Jason had no idea how to respond to her but he knew she can't keep showing up at his house unannounced.
"Can you please call before you come over next time, Okay? I am married. We are no longer a couple of teenagers causing mayhem, and coming and going at whim" Jason told her but his face softened.
Tammy had a contrite look on her face.
"I promise to call next time. Seriously, I promise. Can I at least get a hug from you? I haven't seen you for ten years and all you did yesterday was stare at me…chastise me and stare more at me" Tammy told him.
Jason scratched his head.
Was he allowed to hug his former girlfriend/ best friend, who he shares a daughter with?
He was saved by the sound of the opening door.
"Jason, who is…oh, it's you" Mckenna said when she stepped outside.
"Hello, Mckenna. Sorry for barging in on you, I will call next time like Jassy made me promise. Gosh! He grew up to be a serious grumpy old man" Tammy talked to Mckenna like they were old friends.
"Do you want to come inside?" Mckenna offered.
"See, she is nice! Of course, I would love to" Tammy accepted the invitation and entered inside, followed behind by Jason.
Mckenna was about to enter when she heard the gateman open the gate. She waited to see the next intruder.
She smiled when she saw who.
"Amazing, what a nice surprise?!" Mckenna said and hugged her sister.
"Is it? Because I heard that a woman showed up with a child she claims is your husband's and I am here to know what you are doing about the imposter!" Amazing Donna said with a face that spoke volume about the anger she was feeling.
"What am I supposed to do?" Mckenna asked her younger sister.
"I don't know but personally, I like to drag her outside by the hair and make her eat dust until she accepts to leave my sister and her family alone!"Amazing answered truthfully.
"Then I don't think…you should come inside" Mckenna answered with a dimmed eyes and furrowed eyebrows.
"Wait! Is she inside your house?"
