Chapter 118: What is love 2?

Mckenna held the plate of ice chips in left hand while she rubbed her forehead with her right. She was simply worried and it has nothing to do with Kara.

She was supposed to start her prenatal care this week and it didn't feel right going without Jason and now she has to figure out how to tell him, in the same breath she has to explain why she kept it from him.

It was enough to make anyone stressed and since stress wasn't good for the baby, strangely her attempt not to be stressed out only made her stress the more.

She opened the door to her daughter's room and she saw Naya. Mckenna didn't mean to overhear their conversation but she did.

"I want mommy"

"Kara, I am here" Naya answered.

"No, you are Mama not mommy. I want Umma! It hurts!" Kara tried to touch her surgery site but Mckenna's voice stopped.

"Who wants ice chips?!" Mckenna announced as she walked inside. She pretended not to hear their argument.

"Oh my God! Naya, it's so great to see you"

The two women hugged each other.

"There is something different about you" Naya noticed.

"Yeah, I stink. I haven't showered since morning" Mckenna quickly said to throw her off.

"Nah…I don't know what yet but it's good to see you" Naya was genuine.

"The feeling is mutual. Now, here are the ice chips Ms Kara demanded for" Mckenna tried to give the ice chips to Naya because it was the right thing to do but she declined it.

"No. You should give it to her, I need to have a word with her doctor anyway"

Naya answered and walked out.

Mckenna felt bad about the whole thing. It wasn't her intention to make Naya feel like she has been replaced as Kara's mother.

She sat on the bed and pushed rogue strands of hair away from Kara's face.

"Do you want some ice chips, sweetheart?"

"My tummy hurts" Kara complained.

"I know but it's only going to hurt for a while and it will disappear and you will feel better"

Mckenna rubbed her hair in a soothing way. She smiled warmly to show her that everything was going to be alright.

"Okay" Kara accepted "Where is EJ?"

Mckenna hesitated before she answered. She had no idea where her husband's other daughter was. And she hasn't seen Tamara in a while too.

"You know, she was worried about her little sister. She sat down here" Mckenna pointed at the armchair in the room " she sat there waiting for you to wake up. I told you that having a big sister is not bad, didn't I?"

Kara nodded.

"How about I see if EJ is still around and maybe she would want to play a game with you, darling, okay?"

"Okay…but I am tired. Can I sleep instead?" Kara asked her.

"Sure thing, baby girl. I love you" Mckenna kissed her forehead and stood up.

She watched her as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Mckenna wondered when the little girl would catch a break. If she wasn't hurting because of Kane, then it was stupid things like a burst appendix and complications of a burst appendix keeping her on her toes.

She just needs Kara to catch a break and be like a normal little girl.

She was reluctant to leave her alone in the room. Mckenna had made sure that one or two family members were with her as she didn't want to take chances that Kane might try to kidnap her again.

Mckenna heard the door open and she turned around. It was her mother in law, Elixir.

"Hi, Mom"

"Hey, sweetheart. You know tired" Elixir Yagazie came inside the hospital room and stood beside her son's wife.

"I…I am okay, just worried I guess" Mckenna answered and turned her gaze to Kara.

"She is a fighter. She will be fine. You on the other hand need to rest" Elixir placed her palm on Mckenna's back and she rubbed it.

Mckenna needed some good old fashion motherly care too. She didn't resist when Elixir made her sit down and Elixir sat down beside her on the chair's wooden hand.

Mckenna didn't think twice about resting her head on Elixir's thighs.

"I am exhausted, Mom" she admitted at last.

"I know, baby. Tamara showing up with a love child can't be easy for you, Mckenna. I knew it wasn't when I walked in on James' mistress holding his infant. Children always complicate things" Elixir stroked her hair like Mckenna was an adorable cat.

"It isn't. I keep second guessing his feelings for me. Frankly, it's exhausting"

"He loves you, Mckenna. You and not Tamara. Do you know what I asked him when he stormed into my room asking for my mother's ring to give to you?"

Mckenna sat upright. She was interested in knowing.

Elixir smiled like she was a proud mama.

"I asked my baby boy if he loved you with all his heart? Is his love for you worthy of my mother's ring?" Elixir looked at Mckenna.

"What did he say?" McKenna's curiosity was making her stand on her toes.

"Jason came closer to me and I knew that he needed me to take him seriously. He said 'I'll die for her, Mama. I will love her till there is nothing left of me, you have to believe that. Of course, I did…after I tried to persuade him to forget about dying for anyone, obviously"

Mckenna smiled and placed her head back on her thigh.

"I opened the safe and took out the ring box and I handed it over to my beautiful boy who was so in love that he was willing to die. That memory has stayed with me since then because I found solace in your love story, Mckenna. Even though I was trapped in a loveless marriage, my boy broke the cycle and he found himself a girl to love. You…" Elixir pushed her to face her.

"You and Jason, you made me believe in love again and now, I have Spencer. And girl, I am going to marry the heck out of him. Jason loves you and only you, he told me that himself. And you know that too deep down in your heart, sweetheart!"

Mckenna hugged her.

"Thanks Mom. I really needed the pep talk. And that ring, It is the most beautiful thing i have ever seen"

"I love you, Mckenna. And I am glad you are a part of my family, sweetheart"

"I love you too, Mom"

"Now, if you tell Jason that I am going to say yes to Spencer's proposal, I will kill you, child"

Mckenna chuckled and so did Elixir.

Mckenna decided that this was it. She was going to tell Elixir about the pregnancy and ask her opinion about telling Jason.

"Mom, I need to…" Mckenna was interrupted when Naya entered the room.

"Hello, Ms Elixir"

"Naya, we are so glad you are here. A time like this, we need family, right Mckenna?" Elixir asked her daughter in law.

"Naya knows it. Mom, do you mind staying here with Kara while I grab a snack with Naya?" Mckenna asked and stood up.

"Yeah. Go on, I need some alone time with my grandbaby anyway"

Mckenna stood and grabbed Naya's hand and they walked towards the cafeteria.

She ordered some food and drinks and they sat down.

"I feel like you want to talk to me about something" Naya told her and took a sip from her glass of water.

Mckenna pushed the bag of fries to Naya but she declined and took the bowl of salad instead. Mckenna smiled and remembered that not everyone loved junk food like her did.

"I overheard your conversation with Kara. I am sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop"

"I would say it's fine except now, I know that you know that my own daughter wants you more than she wants me. She even calls you mommy" Naya started eating her salad.

"I'm really sorry, Naya. Believe me, I am not trying to replace you and be Kara's mother…"

Mckenna was interrupted by Naya.

"You could have stopped her from calling you mommy. What she should be calling you is Umma but…."

"Naya, I am sorry and as soon as she wakes up, we will have a conversation about it"

Naya smiled.

"Mckenna, relax. I am just pulling your leg. I know when she started calling you that. We actually had a conversation about it. Don't get me wrong, the fact that she wants mommy more than mama stings a little…"

Mckenna was surprised. Her face showed it.

"You did?"

"We were talking on a video call a month ago and she asked if it was okay to call you that. And so we made a deal. You can be mommy to her because let's face it, you are the one doing all the work and I will be Mama"

Naya answered and took a gulp of water.

Mckenna simply stared at her with her mouth wide open.

Wait! Naya knew all along!
