Chapter 10:The Head Maid

My name is Layla. I am a head maid responsible for taking care of Jameela. I know she is old enough to be taken care of, but it was her father's command that l should look for her.

I remembered the day when we were at the castle; it was several days after her father took her from that room.

We were in a living room. He ordered the butler to tell the maids to serve us tea and refreshments. After that, he looked at me while I am standing near the door "sit down." he said while pointing toward the chair in front of him. He sat down and then I did the same.

He said to me firmly "from now on, you should look at her carefully. I know it is not hard for you, especially when you had been taking care of her before."

"Yes. I understand. I will do my best." I said obediently.

"You SHOULD do your best; otherwise, you will be the same as those people."

I tried to calm myself after hearing what he just said.

"What do you mean? And what did you do to them?" I asked while putting my hands on my lap to calm myself.

"Hhhhh ... Who knows!" He laughed. Then he continue saying "at least I trust you. You will do your job at best, am I right?" He smirked.

I heard someone was knocking at the door.

"May I come in?" a female voice was coming behind that door.

"Yes. come in." He answered.

The door opened and I saw the maid carrying a plate. It was a tea and refreshments. She put the plate on a table, and then she served the tea to us.

"You may leave now." He said.

"Yes. You Majesty." She said and then went outside and closed the door.

He drank his tea. He looked at me and said "drink."

I did what he said in an instant, then he told me "what about that girl?"

"Huh?"

He looked at me sharply "you know who I am talking about. What is she doing now? Is she adapting to this environment?"

I looked down and said "it is difficult for her. She is still trying to adapt to this place."

"Why is she taking too long?!" he raised his voice.

"Please give her some time. It is only been three days since she comes to the castle." I raised my voice back at him without notice.

"You dare to raise your voice to a king!!" He shouted loudly.

"I am sorry." I was actually trying to convince him. I did not mean to raise my voice intentionally.

"There will be no other chances for you if you did that again." He warned me.

"I am sorry, really sorry." I apologized.

"The reason why you are here is because you are useful now." he paused while looking at me, then he said "at least you are useful for now."

"What did he mean by that?!!" I flinched while talking to myself.

"Ummmm ... Your Majesty, can you give your daughter some time to know what she is supposed to do." I said it in a faint voice.

"Don't mention the name 'daughter' to me. She is not my daughter!" He warned me.

I looked at him surprisingly. His features telling me that he is still the same. He did not change at all! He still despise his daughter!

"Please. Listen to me, Your Majesty. I raised her, and I know her personality much better than anyone, she will not be that capable to learn about her future duties in the castle. At least, give her a few more days to learn." I bowed in front of him. I was really desperate trying to convince him.

He sighed and said while looking at me "fine, I will give you some time to settle this problem."

I really wanted to hear that answer. I smiled and said "don't worry. I am sure it will be enough time to make her adaptable to this environment."

He stood up and said "I will be going now. Don't forget to report me daily about the progress every time I summoned."

I stood up and said "I will."

He left the living room. I exhaled once he went out. It was really tiring talking to him, especially the topic about his oppressed daughter.

I went out from the living room and without notice, I reached her brother's room. It was night at that day, so I thought she was sleeping. However, I really wanted to see her after the talk that I had with her father.

I knocked the door, but she did not answer. I opened the door silently and looked at her. She was sleeping on the couch. The lights were on and the window was open. I closed the window and then sat behind her. I pat her head gently and said "I promised your mother that I will be taking care of you. I will never leave you again."
