112 The Monarch's Anger

When Ning Fu heard the words 'beloved official', he abruptly realised that the other person had regained their senses and was angry at him for his seemingly innocent questions.

For a moment, he cursed his bad luck which always seemed to strike at the most inopportune of the moments but since he didn't have any excuses for his behaviour and both of them knew the truth, he didn't think that it would be a good reflection of his character if he blatantly denied any accusations that would be thrown around right about now.

So, he kept his head down, closed his eyes briefly and didn't dare to utter a single word.

Su Li snorted at the seemingly afraid visage the other person put up and questioned.

When the only response to her words was complete and utter silence, she turned her face away so as to be not disgusted by this person who had no compunction meddling into other people's affairs.

With a flick of her sleeves, she tried to stand up but since she had been sitting for so long, her legs had gone numb and she stumbled.

Ning Fu scrambled as he tried to stop the monarch from falling and in his haste, he held the monarch in his embrace from behind.

However, the other person shrugged his help and started walking away while he stared at the monarch's back forlornly.

However, he couldn't help but raise his lips in a semblance of a smile when the emperor walked a few steps ahead and then stopped abruptly while looking around him curiously.

Ning Fu could guess the reason.

The monarch had most probably not visited this place before and since he didn't have anyone to point the way; the other person must be perplexed as to what direction to take to go back to the Imperial Palace.

Still, since he wasn't out of the hot water, he didn't dare make the monarch stand there and hastily walked to catch up to the person and softly voiced his opinion.

The entire journey back was spent in silence.

When Ning Fu peeked at the monarch he could still feel the remnants of his anger so he wisely kept his words to himself.

The Head Commander didn't know what wrong he had committed but he was of the firm belief that the ever magnanimous monarch wouldn't scold him without any rhyme and reason so he kept his grievances to himself and reflected on his actions.

Still, he didn't dare voice his thoughts and simply lowered his head.

"Just leave Zhen alone for now."

Finished with her words, Su Li made for her chambers but then she recalled the person who was stuck like a dog-plaster to her since the evening and raised her hand to massage her forehead where she could feel the beginning of an oncoming headache.

Sighing to herself, she called.

"Unit commander, you follow Zhen and Head Commander, you go and tell Imperial Mother that Zhen is back."

It must have been this bastard that had something against him to the monarch and filled the naive and kind-hearted monarch's ears with his lies.

Well, no worries. Days were still long and it wasn't sure who would have the last laugh.

He would get even with this sour-faced eyesore another day.

Thinking up to here, the Head Commander of the Shadow Guards turned a warning glare at Ning Fu and then left promptly when he saw that the monarch was losing patience.
