Wade was confused why his twin had such a doubt in his mind so he questioned him about it.
"I overheard Jeanette threatening the doctor at that hospital for a fake medical report by using her uncle's name," Wayne answered and cleared the doubt in Wade's mind.
When he had come back after his phone call with Reuben he caught the conversation between the doctor and the patient.
He was there to witness how Jeanette had called someone whom she addressed as 'Uncle' and then handed the phone over to the doctor when he refused to accept the task that was given to him.
What had stumped him was the fear that he could hear in the doctor's voice while he spoke to whoever it was on the other side of the phone.
"Who could it be?" Wade pondered out loud as the same question was floating in his elder twin brother's brain.
*Ping*
The silence in the room was broken when a text notification sounded from a phone laying on the couch.
Lina's eyes sparkled as she jumped up from her seat and ran towards the couch to fetch her phone which had just made the sound.
Wade turned to his brother when he felt the eyes on his face.
'What is it?' He inquired by raising his eyebrows.
In response, Wayne pointed at Lina with his chin and raised his brows in curiosity.
Wade shrugged indicating that he was not aware of what it was that made their sister jump up in excitement as she practically ran to get her phone.
They looked over and found her slumped on the couch with her cheeks puffed up.
"What's wrong, Nana?" Wade investigated when he saw the saddened and disappointed look on her face.
Lina looked up from her phone as she threw it aside and then sniffled in exaggeration.
"Ruby did not send a single text from the moment I stormed out of his house!" She whined about her sad life incident that had taken place this morning.
The brothers had their doubts when they realized that Lina had stayed over in Benji's apartment.
However, now after hearing from her mouth that she had spent the night over at Reuben's house, they glared at her.
'Shit! They are going to misunderstand the situation!' She stuck her tongue to her cheek when she noticed their vicious glare.
"Do you care to explain why you were in his house early in the morning?" Wade glowered at her while baring his fangs.
Wayne did not want to stay silent as he had been called a 'man whore' by that very same man who had dared to keep their baby sister with him overnight.
"What did that bastard do to you?" He snarled in a ferocious voice.
They believed that their baby sister was too young to discover the physical relationships between men and women and no matter what anyone told them, this was never going to change.
'Did they…?' Wade's eyes widened when he thought of the things that took place in the dark of the night between a man and a woman.
'Did that asshole sleep with my Nana and then discard her after he was done?' Wayne's thoughts were more on the extreme end of the spectrum.
The very thought of such a thing happening to their beloved little sister whom they pampered the most made them seethe in anger.
Lina once again rolled her eyes at what their stupid thoughts might be and scoffed at them.
"Stop whatever it is that you are thinking! Nothing of that sort happened!" She rectified their improper assumptions about what might have happened last night.
'The most that we have done is use tongue! We have yet to take it any further!' She recalled and then sighed.
Her blushing cheeks as she thought of the mature and ecchi things that they had assumed she had done grew even darker.
'But he still did not try to stop me when I left the apartment!' She scowled and then pushed those ecchi thoughts out of her mind.
"Then why were you at his place in the morning and what did he do that made you storm out of there?" Wayne's gossipy nature was awakened.
Since she had reassured them that there were no such adult activities between them, Wayne was relieved and his curiosity to know more took over.
Wade did not chide him as he was also equally curious.
"I was called over to Benji's place where I discovered that Ruby was sick." She answered while subconsciously tugging at her collar.
The handprints that he had left on her neck had only darkened by the time she woke up and hence she had worn a black turtleneck top with a black A-line skirt today.
The twins did not notice anything odd with her subconscious action and stared at her with curious eyes.
Lina sighed and then retold what had happened and how Benji had discovered about his sickness.
She even ranted in depth about the incident at breakfast for the longest time after she was done with her narration.
"Can you believe it!? He likes oatmeal while I can't even think of oatmeal!" She sobbed as she remembered his enthusiasm.
Wade and Wayne were already aware of Reuben's love for the healthy breakfast so they simply gave her a sympathetic nod.
"What was worse than his love for that milky goop was that he was so silent when he heard about me staying at Benji's!" She continued with her rant and huffed in anger.
Just the thought of his cool and collected face made her frustrated.
The twins were confused when they witnessed this strange attitude of hers.
"Shouldn't you be happy that he trusts you enough that he doesn't mind your sleepovers at Benji's place?" Wayne asked with troubled eyes.
Lina blinked at him blankly and then sneered at the simplemindedness that she had encountered.
"What's the fun in that!? All the MCs have a boyfriend or husband who is jealous and possessive over her!" She taught them the right meaning of what she meant by her words.
"But what about me? Will I be stuck with a man who doesn't care about who I hang out with?" She muttered to herself and frowned.
Reuben not having a reaction about that information was becoming a thorn that was pricking her novel loving heart.
Here, she was hoping for a smooth sailing relationship with only fluff but her novel obsession wanted her to experience the problems that she had read so many times.
She sighed once again at her contradictory views and then plopped onto the couch.
Wayne was utterly confused as to what had happened while Wade seemed to have understood that this must have something to do with those novels she loved to read.
"You wouldn't get it." He waved his hand dismissively when he felt Wayne nudging his arm looking for answers.
______
Wade felt generous when he saw the awful mood that Lina was in today and decided to take her out for lunch.
Of course, Wayne would never miss the chance of extracting money from the miser's pocket and hence he too shamelessly tagged along.
They drove in Wade's car since Wayne had arrived at Obsidia in his two-seater convertible.
Benji and Kirk were given the tasks of completing the verification of the files that Lina and Wade had reviewed before the events that had happened today.
This made the Douglas brothers spend more time together and also caused them to eat their lunch together.
On the way to the Italian restaurant that was one of Wade's side businesses, Lina called Reuben to enquire about his health.
'He may have made me furious in the morning but that does not mean that I will ignore him. He is a patient who needs care after all!' She worried as she waited for the call to be answered.
Within a few seconds, the beep which meant that her call was connected was heard.
"Hey, Ruby! Did you rest well? Do you still have a high temperature? A headache or sore throat? Should I call a doctor?" She threw a barrage of questions his way before he could open his mouth.
A deep throaty chuckle that assaulted her ear made her blush once again.
'Why is his sick voice so sexy? Is this normal? Why do I feel like he is a demon who has come to seduce me!' She lamented as she turned to look outside the window.
The burning red ears that were proof of her sudden embarrassment were a dead giveaway but the twins had failed to notice it.
"Is he alright?" Wade asked while driving and Wayne nodded his head as he too was curious.
"Oh, so they are with you?" Reuben's gruff voice due to the cold was heard through the speaker of the phone.
"Hmm." Lina answered because if she spoke now, then he would notice the nervous crackle in her voice.
'Can someone's voice turn you on?' She wondered and then furiously shook her head to discard that evil thought.
"I am alright. I took a nap after my shower. No temperature and no need to call for the doctor." He responded to every single question she had asked.
A subtle smile emerged on her face when she heard him but coughed to cover it up.
'Was that a…' She frowned as her head tilted to the side in bafflement.
This was because, just as Lina was about to speak, she heard a woman's voice from the background.
"Is a woman there with you, Ruby?" She directly interrogated about what she had just heard.
Wade and Wayne raised their eyebrows when they overheard what she had just inquired of.
The prolonged silence over the phone made her jittery but she chided her heart to stay still.
"Uh… That was… " His nervous voice made her clench her phone as she awaited what his answer might be.
'Who is that?' She wondered as a pit of anxiety formed in her stomach.
