Chapter 240 - I Lied Because...

Reuben could only blink after hearing what she had to say.

"But, Kitten!" He uttered like a whining child but her narrowed eyes made him halt mid-sentence.

Lina crossed her arms over her chest and waited for him to explain himself while glaring at him.

'That posture tells me that he is not interested in hearing what I have to say.' Reuben surmised after taking a single glance at her rigid body language.

When she received no answer, she scoffed but soon the scoff turned into a sigh.

This time, she raised her hands and cupped his face, and rubbed her thumbs over his soft skin.

Reuben could not help but smile, enjoying this simple yet precious gesture that she had made.

Seeing his smile, Lina also smiled and then looked him in the eyes before speaking up.

"Ruby, do you have any idea what kind of weird thoughts were swirling around in my mind when I realized that you were lying to me?" She questioned and raised her right brow.

Reuben did not make her wait for too long as he was already getting familiar with how her brain functioned after the various interactions that they've had.

"You immediately associated the voice you heard in the background as proof of my cheating?" He queried even though he knew that something along these lines had taken place.

Lina nodded her head since this was exactly what had come to her mind after their phone call.

"And then when you heard me denying that there was a woman here, it only intensified your suspicions?" He completed his deductions and was met with another positive reply from his girlfriend.

Lina could hear the taunt in his voice as he answered her but whatever he had said was the truth.

"Can you blame me for that? YOU lied! Why would you lie if you had nothing to hide?" She blurted out and bit her lower lip, aggrieved that she had to go through so much today.

Reuben raised his hands and pulled her cheeks like one would do to any child with soft and chubby cheeks.

'I feel like I am talking to a child sometimes.' He remarked and then chuckled.

"Kitten, I lied because I wanted to surprise you but I've learned my lesson now." He sighed and shook his head in disappointment.

Lina forgot about her cheeks being squished and widened her eyes as she looked at him with a dumbfounded expression.

"What do you mean by that?" She clamored in panic at why he had said such a thing to her.

'Will he stop giving me surprises like this because I was too hasty in coming to a conclusion earlier?' She wondered as she did not want that to happen.

She loved getting presents and the thought that she had fucked up the first time that Reuben had done something special for her was making her want to kick herself.

All that anger and blame that she was misdirecting onto him was now being directed towards herself.

'Why do I always jump to conclusions before thinking things through?' She sneered at herself and pouted after which she bit her lip harder.

Reuben had stopped pulling her cheeks when she had drifted off into the marvelous land of self-blame.

He pressed his thumb down on her lower lip and released them from her hold.

"Don't bite your lips." He commanded in a husky voice which made Lina shudder ever so slightly.

Reuben hoisted her up by her waist for a second before he spread his legs apart.

He then turned her body around so that her back was now connected to his chest with his arms wrapped around her waist.

Lina smiled when she noticed how he had maneuvered them into this new position and rested her head on his chest.

"Why do you seem so upset? I meant that I will not lie to you any longer… Even if it was for a surprise." He whispered into her ears playfully.

Lina's worries faded away and she held onto his arms which were around her waist.

"And I will not jump to conclusions so quickly!" She mentioned her promise which received a snort from the man behind her.

"I'll be the judge of that." He replied while rolling his eyes at the same sentence that he had heard once before.

'I'll make him believe me!' Lina vowed and decided to work hard to gain his trust in this matter.

Now that the confusion between them was sorted out, she glanced at the wardrobe and tapped his hand.

"Hmm?" He hummed with his eyes shut as he rested his chin on her shoulder.

"So your surprise was moving my clothes to this wardrobe?" She inquired while trying to control the excitement in her voice.

Reuben gave a sideways glance at her upturned lips and then shook his head in refusal.

"Not just the wardrobe but this entire room was your surprise." He added before she misunderstood him again.

Lina's eyes widened when she heard this, she wanted to turn around and face him but his arms were securing her in place.

"This is your room now. You can stay here whenever you want and decorate it however you desire." He completed his part and then waited for her to say something.

'Will she think that we are moving too fast?' His apprehensions about this surprise he planned for her heightened when she remained silent.

"Why?" Was all he heard from her after a long silence.

'Does he…?' Lina did not want to get her hopes up only to be dashed later on so she waited for him to give her a reason why he had done so.

Reuben choked when he was asked that single worded question as his eyes drifted from the wardrobe to her cheeks which had turned a soft pink.

"How could I let my Kitten spend her nights at another man's house? It doesn't matter even if that man is her assistant." He confessed why he had done that.

Lina's inner novel lover was jumping high up in the clouds after hearing his confession.

This was what she had hoped for during breakfast but Reuben had stayed so calm and composed that it had driven her mad and eventually driven her away from his penthouse.

"I am a jealous man, Kitten. I am not willing to share you with anyone… Apart from your family." He continued pouring out his dark feelings in her presence.

Lina's heart was close to doing cartwheels inside her body when she heard his words.

After all, this was what she had always wanted.

A man who would be jealous and possessive over her albeit that she should like that man in return and approve of his possessive tendencies.

'And Reuben is just that man!' She exclaimed in her heart.

Her earlier worries that he did not care where she spent the night were washed away when she heard his confession.

"I thought that it did not matter to you as to where I stayed for the night." She muttered and bit her lip to control her smile.

This smile had formed because, just as she had completed her sentence, she felt his arms tightening around her.

"Baby, I will obviously be jealous if you spent the night at someone else's house when I am still here." He growled into her ears.

Lina shuddered, feeling his hot breath fanning over her now extremely sensitive ear which could not help but turn red.

She turned her head sideways and rubbed her cheek onto his chest like a small and adorable kitten.

"You have no idea how happy I am to hear that from your mouth." She revealed her inner thoughts which made Reuben freeze.

He had been expecting her to be mad at him for acting out of turn or for being overbearing so early into their relationship but no such thing had taken place.

Instead, he was being showered with this affection from his Kitten after revealing his dark thoughts.

'My Kitten is so unique and unpredictable!' He praised her odd behavior which made him smile every time he faced it.

Her eccentric and strange behavior was labeled as unique and unpredictable by this man who would only become more doting as the days went by.

"Are you happy with my surprise?" He questioned to hear words of appreciation from her mouth.

Lina did not disappoint him as she began building a tower of praises in his name.

"Ruby, to sum it up in one sentence… I loved it!" She concluded her monologue which was very much appreciated by the man who was pleased with what he had thought of in such a short amount of time.

"If only we did not have the cheating misunderstanding then this would have been a spectacular surprise." She mumbled to herself.

Reuben was at such short proximity to her so how could he not hear her murmurs?

'I think I should explain something to her so that such incidents do not occur ever again.' He reckoned and then cleared his throat.
