Having three times as much stamina as I needed for Maid Level 1, I was able to do a lot of things more efficiently and quickly reached Maid Level 10.
‘Every time I leveled up, my reputation got better, and my job as a maid turned out pretty good.’
I’d have to get a job as a saint as soon as possible if I wanted to get Helper’s advice, but I’ve already gotten used to sweeping and wiping the mansion with an ostrich feather duster.
“Well, these days the maid’s faces seem to be glowing because the lady made things easier.”
Upon hearing another praise from Martha, the other kitchen lady shrugged her shoulders and served a large portion of custard pudding. Dessert was rarely served on the table of servants, so it was obviously a special treat for me.
“Now! This is because I’m grateful. You always like sweets.”
“No,” I shook my head as I munched through the pudding, “Please call me next time if you need me. Wow, it’s really good.”
I spread a generous amount of butter on the freshly made fluffy bread and took a bite. As it literally melted in my mouth, I raised my thumb to the lady and smiled as if to compliment her.
“I totally misunderstood Lady Edith. She is such a nice and humble person.”
She seemed to have been very moved when I took over for her after something happened to her sick son and she had to go down to her village in a rush.
“I know. You’re always helping out someone in need.”
I did it for extra pay, but I didn’t correct Martha’s misunderstanding.
“Where does the lady help out? Lady Edith is really good at her job.”
“That’s right. Just stepping out to help others…”
At the kitchen lady’s words, Martha’s expression rapidly darkened. I could easily guess that Jian’s name would come out of her mouth right after.
“Like the saint who does the same thing.”
As I expected, Martha began to take a swipe at Jian. Almost all of the servants were cursing her these days, so it wasn’t a surprise.
“Ugh. She came into the kitchen earlier and made a fuss to help. She used soap on the potatoes I had peeled and washed, so I had to throw them all away.”
“Oh my God! You tried to wash carrots like that yesterday, right? But did you?”
“She thought only carrots shouldn’t be washed with soap.”
I scratched my cheeks awkwardly at the swings of conversation that followed. It was an action I chose one day.
‘I was trying to raise Curtis’ likeability…’
Curtis liked women that were slightly clumsy and idiotic. I don’t know if washing vegetables in soapy water was really stupid or not.
‘But the Jian of this game isn’t even a player, so why is she doing that?’
My head tilted to the side at the sudden question I thought of, but Jian opened the door to the kitchen and entered.
“Hello. Is there anything I can do to help you?”
People were busy avoiding eye contact despite Jian greeting with a bright smile on her face. Even Martha, with her sweet personality, averted her eyes. Jian then approached me with an awkward expression.
“Hello, Young Lady,” she greeted me.
“Hello, but you don’t have to call me Young Lady anymore,” I replied as nicely as I could.
“How can Young Lady Edith not be called such when she is Marquis Abina’s daughter? I don’t want to be rude.”
It was a thoughtless word that made the servants who called me by my name friendly these days rude.
But I didn’t have the energy to correct her, so I nodded to her and her shining eyes, “Sure, then.”
“Thank you for understanding how I feel, Young Lady. In return, I’d like to help the Young Lady with her work today, would it be okay?”
“Ah…”
Jian smiled at me beautifully as I hesitated to answer.
“You don’t need to worry. It’s because I feel so sorry to be just a guest.”
“But not helping is helping…”
As if she didn’t hear me mumbling, Jian shrugged her shoulders and reached out to the custard pudding in front of me.
“Let me clean this up first! I think you’ve eaten it all!”
Taking my plate without confirming if I had finished already, she tossed the custard pudding into the recycling bin.
‘Is she picking a fight with me?’
Otherwise, it was clear that Jian must really be an idiot.
As soon as Curtis’ taste in women became very questionable, the restaurant door opened again.
