30 Chapter 20

The days pass far too quickly.

Before I know it we're assembled in the war room waiting for Helena to tell us what's expected of us.

She told everyone else in private, but she seems to have made an exception for us.

Arabella, Riel, Adrian, Kent, Larcen and I are all gathered.

It's Adrian who breaks the uncomfortable silence.

"I'll be with those providing first aid, right?"

Helena hesitates for a moment.

"... No. I have a special task for all of you here."

And by special she means dangerous, doesn't she?

"While the main force of our army leads the assault on the guards in front of the castle, I need the rest of you to sneak in with our stealth group."

That is to be expected.

Those engaging the guards and attempting to force their way in stand very little chance at actually succeeding.

Not when they'll have to deal with being attacked with magic as well.

"Once inside I'm going to need you, Larcen, to split off from the group and make your way towards the throne room from the South."

She pointed out his course on one of the maps she had spread out.

A map that used to belong to my father.

"Sonia, you will make your way towards the throne room from the East. The path will be filled with guards and mages but you'll have Adrian with you to heal you and Arabella, Riel and Kent will watch your back. You'll be the main distraction so Larcen can get the job done."

Larcen purses his lips, obviously not happy with the situation.

Not that I can blame him.

He has just been informed that the son he tried to talk out of joining the battle has one of the most dangerous positions in it.

Kent doesn't look happy either but for entirely different reasons I'd wager.

"And what are you going to be doing while the rest of us risk our lives?"

Helena's glare at Larcen looks fit to kill but he doesn't back down.

"You don't need to know that. You just need to do what you're told."

"So you expect the rest of us are going to put our lives in extreme danger without even knowing if you're going to do the same."

Larcen is practically radiating fury.

It's not for the position he's in, though.

Helena shifts her weight away from him in a move that would be disregarded by anyone else.

"Yes."

Her voice is defiant but her stance is wary.

"Now that that's settled, I have things to do."

She makes to leave but Larcen isn't done yet.

He reaches out and even though I know what's coming I'm frozen to the spot.

I don't warn her.

I barely even breathe.
