Chapter 109 - (Hundred) Eight: Laziness

Navaya had her nails in her mouth, nipping them. Her whole body tensed as she sat on her chair, staring at her phone, waiting for it to ring. Praying for it to ring. Her thoughts had never been chaotic, never this unsettling.

Ever since she found out about the shooting that took place in Becca's restaurant, Navaya's mind completely lost the ability to think straight and things only got worse when she heard Raquel was found dead in there.

Instantly, her thoughts reverted to when Becca told her she and Raquel were going to have lunch and after hearing about what happened at that Restaurant, Navaya realized that it was probably where they both ate at. The maddening thing about all this was Becca was nowhere to be found, more like there was no trace of her there.

Navaya didn't know the meaning of peace of mind last night and had been trying Becca's number ever since but it kept saying the line was unavailable.

Panic broke out in her head as she got fed up with waiting for the phone to ring and tried calling Becca once more but still nothing.

Navaya sucked in a breath to calm down a bit. It didn't work, she still felt tense. Even thinking positive seemed impossible right now, not with all the worse possible case scenarios hopping in her mind.

" Becca, what the fuck? Answer your phone." Navaya whispered to herself as she tried Becca's number again but got nothing.

She lowered the phone back on the table and resumed assaulting her fingernails while staring at it, waiting. Just then, her turbulent brain provoked an idea. She wouldn't say the idea was just generated since it had popped into her head more than once.

Contact Leo Kane about it.

Despite how dire the matter was, Navaya, for the millionth time, nudged that idea aside. Too scared to go ahead with it. Just the presence of that man gave her shivers, talking to him was even worse.

Apparently, Becca was immune to how dark and scary the air around him was, but Navaya wasn't. Leo scared her, especially when she showed up late to the meeting she had with him.

A ringing sound brought Navaya out of her stupor. Her phone. Her phone was ringing.

Navaya jerked and snatched the phone from the table, her hands cold and shaky as she saw the name of the caller pop up on her screen.

Bestie.

Hastily, Navaya answered the call and held the phone to her ears.

" Becca! Why weren't you answering your phone? Do you know how worried I was? Where are you? " Navaya scolded, her hand on her chest as she tried to dispel the cloud of anxiety that enveloped her. She was one panic attack away from telling Becca's parents about it. Even worse, Navaya was considering calling Johnny.

Johnny, the matter was so bad that she saw calling him as an option. A fucking option!

Navaya didn't need to be a Ramus to know that telling him that his sister's life might be in danger was a bad idea. A terrible idea, particularly when no facts were proven yet.

" Relax, nothing happened to me. I'm fine." Becca said over the phone and the tight knot in Navaya's chest loosened. She heaved a relieved sigh.

" Thank goodness." Navaya's eyes closed as she exhaled. " But where are you?"

" I'm at home with Leo," Becca responded instantly, hoping her answer gave Navaya some closure. From the way Navaya spoke, Becca practically heard the worry oozing from her friend's voice and didn't like it.

Navaya's eyes opened, her heart lurching to her stomach. " Oh," She wavered as her mood swayed from worry to disheartened, slowly starting to dislike the idea of Becca living with Leo.

How would Navaya muster up the stamina to visit now when she knew Leo would be there, hovering and staring at Becca. Just thinking about the experience was hella uncomfortable. Nerve-wracking. Insufferable. She rather not go through that.

" See you tomorrow then." Navaya breathed, forcing on a smile.

" See you," Becca replied and she hung up.

Navaya retracted her hand that held the phone to her side and sighed. Her lashes flickered as she stared at her desk, happy that nothing happened to Becca but at the same time, upset that Leo shrewdly cut off her autonomy to visit Becca whenever she wanted.

Navaya plummeted deeper into her chair, her eyes flitting to the stack of documents on one side of her desk and sighed, again. The work she had to take care of, or at least handle seemed to have doubled today since Becca was currently at home, with her precious Leonardo.

All in a day's work for a vice president of a prospering business like Atlas.

Her lips shrunk into a pout as the thought rejuvenated itself in her mind, wondering how she would finish the work or even begin. Well, she did know how to start but the problem here was the inexplicable laziness that presently plagued her, preventing her from doing just that. Start.

Navaya eyed the haystack of paperwork that needed reviewing, trying to make it disappear with the sheer will of her thoughts but nothing happened. The work remained in front of her, perfectly intact.

Sluggishly, she picked up one of the files that tortured her with its mere presence and flipped it open, skimming through the first page before closing it back up and tossing it next to the rest on the table, where it belonged.

" Sorry but not today," Navaya muttered as she vaulted out of her chair and headed straight for the door of her office, exiting. Why stay? Navaya didn't know why she came to work anyway.

With how uneasy her thoughts were a while ago, she wasn't even able to complete a single task and after the restlessness passed, the disheartening feeling and indolence took over, manifesting itself in her and still found a way to render her completely inefficient for the day.

That was what Navaya kept telling herself as she strode out of her office and to where her car was parked. A well-crafted excuse for her being lazy.

A grin dragged her lips as she neared her car, prepared to make a clean escape. She stretched out her hand to open her car's door but froze when she heard her name being called out by a familiar voice. Her grin instantly transcended into a snarl as she spun around on her heels, both her eyes hardening.

Johnny!

" You just seem to be everywhere these days, what are you? A genie?" Navaya sassed and just always, she was greeted by an explicit display of his perfect teeth hygiene. He grinned.

" I can be your genie." Johnny took a step towards her, grinning hard as he found her sassy comment earlier quite funny.

On hearing his words, Navaya didn't fight the overpowering urge to roll her eyes at him. No, this time she rolled them well and hard, harder than how he was grinning.

She watched him walk up to her, only stopping when he stood just a foot away from her and she stayed put, not moving an inch. He didn't even have to hold her in place.

Johnny's heart skipped, joy saturating his entire being as he towered over her. It appears their last hangout tweaked her demeanor towards him. Good. Exhilarating even. Johnny would have grinned wider if his jaw didn't hurt so damn much and his lips weren't already threatening to rip.

" Where are you going?" He asked, ignoring the dagger stares she was sending his head.

Navaya snorted. " Why are you here?"

" But I asked first." He chuckled, earning himself another eye roll. How cute. " Oh wait, let me guess."

Johnny said as he slipped his hands into his pockets, smiling down at her. " You were heading to the mall, weren't you?" He asked and Navaya's eyes widened slightly from shock before going back to frowning at him.

It was true, she was heading to the mall, and she hated that he was right.

Johnny knew that she had a bad habit of spending ridiculously when overwhelmed. It was just one out of Navaya's many nasty habits and it pissed her off that he knew them all.

Challengingly, Navaya arched a brow. " And how is that remotely your concern?"

Johnny shot her a look and his lips parted to speak. " You are my concern."

From the look on his face, Navaya already knew what he was going to say before he even said it so she wasn't surprised.

She glared, readying her comeback line but Johnny placed his finger on her lips, silencing her.

" Before you oppose me, again, just hear me out. All I want is to accompany you, to be your free bodyguard again." He said calmly and Navaya looked at his long finger, aching to bite it off. And as if reading her mind, Johnny immediately retracted his finger from her lips before she decided to go all feral on him.

" Why do you even want to tag along?" Navaya asked, rendered a little confused by his present actions. He wasn't holding her against her will anymore and was now asking to tag along with her, why? What's in it for him?

" Isn't it obvious? I have nothing else to do." He shrugged.

Lies. All lies, but even if it wasn't, Johnny would still be willing to drop everything for her.

His eye then trailed off her face, breaking eye contact to stare at her hair— she had taken out her braids and tied up her dark curly hair in a loose bun.

Beautiful... So fucking beautiful.

Navaya ignored his blatant enchanted stares on her hair, cursing herself as she began contemplating his offer. It would be nice to flaunt around a man as powerful and rich as Johnny Ramus. As a bodyguard, just that and nothing else.

" Fine but you have to maintain a distance of three feet away from me at all times. Are we clear?" Navaya asked sternly and Johnny dropped his gaze to his feet and took two steps back, his grin resurrecting.

" Crystal."
