314 Chapter 314: She Keeps A Distance

Seeing how casual Matt appeared to be, Nathalia thought she would deal with it calmly. She ordered a coffee, waited quietly, and when the coffee was served, she had a few sips before she spoke, casually, "What's this about?"

She asked with a polite smile.

Matt couldn't help gazing at her, amazed by her beauty. "I, err, I would like you to help persuade Sue and Spencer. I don't want anything as long as they can forgive dad, as long as dad and Sue don't get divorced."

Nathalia felt a bit awkward by his gaze. She coughed a little cough to remind him, and Matt quickly looked away. I haven't seen her for so long. He thought.

Without hesitation, Nathalia refused, "I'm not in the position to talk mum out of it."

The news that Curt Davidson and his wife were getting a divorce had been most talked about nationally, even globally.

This is mum's decision. I'm just her daughter-in-law. I wouldn't say I like the way dad has treated mum. I stand by mum, whatever her decision is.

Matt knitted his brows and pleaded sincerely, "But you can persuade her. She loves you. She listens to you." He paused for a bit, and with some effort, he added, "Also, Spencer does whatever you tell him..."

The whole world knew how much Spencer and Nathalia loved each other. Every time when Matt saw them in the news, he saw how they held hands, he couldn't help realizing how much in love they were.

Nathalia didn't feel like talking about it. She said a bit impatiently, "So what. I don't want to persuade her. Mum knows what she's doing."

Matt was rather shocked by Nathalia's reaction. She usually thinks for others. I'm sure she understands that it's better for dad and Sue to stay together.

"But why? Dad is not a bad person. He thinks of Sue. He might have seemed fine these past days, but he's been in pain. I can tell. I feel it. All I want is for our family to get along peacefully and love each other. Nathalia, please, do me this favor. Please."

Sophie pulled Nathalia's arm gently, helping Matt persuade her. "Nathalia, please. You will be helping Spencer too. Isn't it great if Spencer and Matt can get along as normal brothers do?" Sophie did want to help Matt, and she was also thinking of the others.

Nathalia found it difficult to explain. Ambiguously, she said, "What you think is the best might not be the best for others."

Sophie was puzzled. "What do you mean? You don't want to help? Do you want to see them like this forever?" She couldn't understand why Nathalia was so stubborn, and it was only a small favor. Doesn't she prefer the family to love each other instead?

Taken aback, Sophie looked at Nathalia pleadingly, and subconsciously held her hand to not let her go.

"Wait, Nathalia. Please at least stay for lunch. We haven't seen each other for a long time. Don't worry. I won't force you to do what you don't like." On seeing Nathalia was about to leave, Matt quickly stood up and pleaded sincerely.

Somehow beautiful memories of the past flashed past, and Nathalia recalled how they used to be close like brother and sister, how he had once helped and protected her. She hesitated.

"Please, Nathalia. Have lunch with us. I've missed you." Sophie looked at her with pleading eyes. She didn't know what she did wrong, but she felt bad that Nathalia was upset.

Nathalia heaved a sigh, thinking, sometimes I don't know what to do with Sophie. I feel like I'm so much more mature, like a generation older than her, while she's so innocent and naïve. Nathalia sat down.

Matt felt relieved. "It's my treat today." He said cheerfully.

"Great. Let's order then!" Sophie smiled happily and recommended dishes that Nathalia loved.

The two girls updated each other about their life recently, chatting delightfully while enjoying the delicious food. Matt listened quietly and passed them some food now and then.

"Pizza for you, Sophie?" he asked with a smile.

"Yes, please!" Sophie replied with a grin.

"And Nathalia?"

"I'm ok, thanks." Nathalia refused politely. She could see that Sophie was feeling loved and a bit shy. She still loves him. Silly girl. He's going to get married soon and she still can't let go.

Nathalia did try persuading Sophie, but Sophie wouldn't listen. She had given up. I guess love can't be reasoned. When one is madly in love, everything is alright. She understood Sophie and respected her, though she was a bit worried about her.

She hoped that time would help Sophie see things more clearly in the future.

Matt seemed to be back to his old self. She didn't see any pretentiousness in him this time. He had been polite and cheerful.

In the beginning, Nathalia did like Matt a lot, and she used to see him as a good friend, like a brother, yet things happened, and everything had changed. She could no longer treat him the same way she used to.

Being rejected, Matt felt a bit disappointed and went quiet. She hasn't changed. She never pretends. It's just that I'm no longer a friend to her. She doesn't let me get close to her anymore. She keeps a distance. Perhaps she will still say hello when we meet, but perhaps she will even avoid me. He thought sadly.

Sophie seemed to sense the change in the atmosphere. She suggested timidly, "Nathalia, we are all good friends, aren't we? Remember when we used to live in the same building, and Matt really looked after us? I'm always grateful for that. Shall we make a toast to Matt?"

Sophie held up her cup and looked at Matt with adoration. Her face was one of a young girl in love. When she said his name, her tone was filled with affection.
