Chapter 1: Don't Blame Us

"Don't blame us, Angela. We don't want this any more than you do."

"We've taken you to our home! We fed you and spent money on you for so many years, and this is how you pay us back!?"

"Ivy needs this heart more than you do. She will die without it!"

Angela Watts felt her body becoming cold. She felt emotionally numb – as if she were invisible. Angela felt she was like a submarine, drifting quietly undetected in the vast ocean, picking up her parent's emotions like sonar yet unable to feel anything herself. Her hands and feet started tingling. She wanted to run – run far away from here, but she could not move. She could only stare at her parents in horror.

Well, technically, her adopted parents!

Today felt like an emotional roller coaster. A roller coaster that was stuck in a constant upside-down loop. Angela had always hated roller coasters.

From the moment she stepped out of her bed, everything had gone wrong. From her stubbed toe to her burnt breakfast all the way to her sister, Ivy, having a heart attack and going to the hospital. It had been absolute chaos. Things could not possibly get worse than this, right? Oh, how wrong she was!

In hindsight, she should have known that something was off when her mother brought her a glass of apple juice and an egg salad sandwich – her favorite. Now, in normal households, this would not be anything out of the ordinary. But for her, it was. Her parents had never paid that much attention to her, let alone do something nice for her. She had always been the black sheep of the family and her sister Ivy was the good child. She got all the love, all the nice new clothes, the shiny gadgets, everything! So, it was a surprise when her mother walked over with the glass and plate in hand.

If only she had known that this was a guise. As soon as she had taken a bite of her sandwich, her mother had started ranting. Angela almost choked on her food when her mother revealed the real reason for her being extra nice to her.

It turned out that she was not their biological daughter. Her parents had adopted her because her older sister, Ivy, had heart disease. They needed a donor, but they could not get on the waiting list – that would be too late. That is where Angela came in – she had been adopted and raised as a guinea pig. Angela felt like an animal about to be slaughtered. Is this what the poor cows felt like when she saw them packed in trucks on the highway?

Her tears were flowing freely down her face, but her so-called parents did not seem to care at all.

She did not want to die! She was a person, a human being! With her own emotions and life! This was HER body! Not anyone else's to do as they pleased! Why should she die to save someone else?

Angela struggled to set aside her plate and stumbled up from the sofa, roughly shoving aside her mom's arm. Normally she would be horrified at her behavior, but now she did not care at all. She staggered to the door when suddenly, it opened from the outside. Seeing the person at the door made Angela's hopes flare-up.

It was her fiancé, Nathan Hill.

"Nathan…"

She rushed into his arms, feeling comforted by the thought that she had at least one person that cared for her. However, she had spoken too soon. Angela felt a tingle; she could feel something cold touching her neck.

Shocked, she looked up at Nathan. She could hardly breathe, her heart began to throb at the ultimate betrayal from everyone that she had loved.

Nathan's eyes were cold when he growled out, "Ivy will survive."

It was his first remark to Angela. No 'how are you' or 'why are you crying.' It was a stark contrast to how Nathan usually treated Angela, and she was flabbergasted. Was this really the same person?

Angela twitched on the ground – whatever her boyfriend had injected was already going into effect in her system. Suddenly, she smiled at the three people standing over her. With the last trace of strength she had, Angela yanked the needle out of her neck and into her c.h.e.s.t, where her heart was thumping wildly.

"Angela!" Nathan shouted angrily, his eyes becoming fierce, "Why? Why did you do that? Ivy is your sister. You would rather destroy your heart than give it to her! She was right. You are very selfish!"

Selfish?! Angela wanted to laugh at the irony, but all she could do was cry out in defeat. She did not want to die this way, but at least, she kept her heart.

***

Angela felt like she was on fire. Hot! It was so hot!

Suddenly, she felt someone kissing her lips, crushing and gnawing on them. She tried to push the person away, but the fire and pain in her body made her approach him, if only to ease her pain.

Suddenly, her sharp pain subsided as quickly as it had come. Angela clearly opened her eyes. She tested her limbs and was surprised to find her n.a.k.e.d body still ached.

Where was she? Had she not been killed? Why was she lay n.a.k.e.d in a strange bed? Questions continued to swirl around in her mind as she looked around, almost waiting for Nathan and her parents to come back to finish her off.

The room was small and dingy – it looked like a hotel room where p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.es and pimps might frequent.

Suddenly the door flew open, and a man walked in wearing all black clothes. Angela watched him, terrified, for she could see his eyes were not friendly. He walked over to her body, staring hungrily like a starving dog. His venomous eyes lingered on her c.h.e.s.t and between her legs. Angela tried to close her legs in a feeble attempt to save herself, but she knew it was of no use.

His hands felt rough as they slid along her body, goosebumps trailing behind. Angela screamed when he yanked her legs apart roughly while opening his belt buckle.

Angela felt nothing but pain and p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e the next hour. His thrusts were hurting her insides repeatedly but also sending shocks of p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e throughout her body. After what seemed like forever, Angela felt the man groan and collapse on top of her, his sweaty body almost crushing her petite form.

After a long time, the man finally fell asleep. Angela struggled to get out of the bed, her body pain with every step she took. She could barely walk two steps before falling, but she had to get out! She could not bear another episode of this. She was in a mess and had no clue of anything, but she knew she had to get out.

Angela found her clothes in the corner of the room. She quickly slid on her black jeans and blouse, wincing at the sharp pain, and grabbed her purse, which, thankfully, still had some cash.

She crept out of the room, praying to God that the man would not wake up. Angela walked down the stairs quietly, internally jumping with joy when she saw no one at the receptionist's desk. Without a second look, Angela ran out of the hotel into the cold night.
