77 Burning the Blood

Draig screamed loudly as his mind twisted and memories indeed resurfaced out of desperation as the brain acted in a way that would allow the torture to end but as Draig's torture continued four ancient symbols glowed upon his back and a fifth began appear. Jared looked at the marking's strangely, his assumption was that a seal was being broken.

"Gregory, I think I found the cause. Keep at it, this seal on his back seems to be breaking" called Jared causing Gregory to look at him oddly.

"Seal" questioned Gregory as he sent another light handed gouge into Draig's rib.

"These symbols just started lighting up on his back" stated Jared causing Gregory to pause his motion causing the symbols to begin fading.

"No, don't stop they're fading. I'm telling you it's a seal, I've seen Zarra lay them plenty of times. It takes a certain amount of force to break them" remarked Jared but then again he was never the bright one and his understanding of runes wasn't anything near adequate to make that judgement but Gregory wasn't thinking clearly.

Soon that fifth symbol began to light up fully with an ominous glow....

Zarra was breaking mentally until he felt a familiar burst of power.

"Draig" whispered Zarra desperately as he burst into dust ignoring his rift to see Gregory and Jared get launched back as Draig's body seemed to be heating up intensely, Jared's arms showing the signs of burning.

"What did you do" roared Zarra looking at his two friends who gone to the lengths of revealing their true might, Gregory even revealing his true body.

Gregory seemed to be snapped to his senses and recounted what he had done in his rage and trembled, Jared was no different as he realized he had gone too far as well.

"Zarra, I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking, I-I just wanted him to realize he was making a mistake" started Gregory his face showing guilt but Jared he actually dropped to his knees, his mighty strength seeming to have left him as his actions caught up with him and he felt sick.

"What Did You Do" growled Zarra as his cloak ruffled angrily despite their being no wind.

"We wanted to knock some sense into him, we thought he would be like you when we were younger" stated Jared clearly, his mind was reeling from the fact that he had actually lost control of himself like that. It had never happened before, it would probably never happen again.

Draig meanwhile was steaming by this point and his mouth open in a silent scream, the grass beneath him even began to scorch and his skin bubbled disgustingly as it healed only to repeat the process.

Zarra in the presence of this event felt something trying to heighten his anger and his dark feelings but he wasn't like these two, he had been baptized in dark energy making him the mage he was.

"Blood Pulse" muttered Zarra causing Gregory and Jared to look at him confused yet hopeful.

"How did this happen" asked Zarra though there was still anger carried in his voice.

"We lost control of ourselves" stated Gregory in an empty voice, it seemed the emotional Necromancer was returning to normal as Zarra's presence counter acted what ever had possessed them.

"There's a seal on his back, five of them" called Jared as he still sat there motionless staring at the different blood stains and a particularly large patch that made him wince.

'Did I really do this, was that really me' asked the Bloodknight mentally, he would never have done something so drastic at most bust the young Feratu up a bit but he had actually hit him like an enemy.

Zarra looked to the symbols but couldn't make sense of them, he didn't know the ancient language of the Vampire's not that he could even identify them as that but soon the heat rocketed to an extreme causing Zarra to shield his face from its intensity.

Draig's skin began to char as his regeneration raced to heal the damage but was doing a poor job, Zarra knew that this was a sign of the Blood Pulse as he fought with the Vampires that had awakened like this in the middle of battle becoming like suicide bombs they would sometimes burst but other times they would become stronger.

As the mage thought this another burst echoed off of Draig and blasted the three men away as Draig fell to the ground eyes wide open as his blackened skin flaked from his body.

"D-Draig" called Zarra rising to his feet quickly in worry but seeing the mage coming caused Draig fear and he leapt away from him like an animal his skin cracking and casting more flakes as it repaired itself.

Gregory and Jared saw the reaction and couldn't even bare to look as they cast their gaze downward cursing themselves.

'Are we really the monsters' thought Gregory thinking back to what the young Feratu had said before.

'I was supposed to be family.....' thought Jared disgusted as he looked towards his would be nephew the look causing Draig to flinch.

Jared felt as if his heart was breaking, he remembered the baby that Zarra couldn't help but show off and to see that same child look at him with so much fear hurt him worse than any blade or skill.

"Draig" called Zarra his voice soaked with emotion.

"S-Stay back" stuttered the Feratu seeming to have reverted to the frightened child from the past, looking into his eyes one could see his mind had broken.

"Come here, come to me. Nothing will hurt you" pleaded the mage taking a slow step forward.

"No, I-I won't fall for it again" spoke Draig his mature voice soft and innocent as if he hadn't lived the years of adolescence.

Draig had reverted to a child, his memories scattered into disarray. He may have possessed regeneration but this was only a physical ability, the psyche was more than what it was capable of repairing.

Zarra tossed his staff to the side and took off the belt that held his items and removed his cloak and held his hand out to show he had nothing that could harm the young Feratu.

"I-It's you" stuttered Draig as it seemed a few early memories managed to stick.

Zarra wasn't sure what he meant but he meant but he would accept any chance given.

"That's right, you remember me" asked Zarra uncertainly.

"Y-yeah, you come to my birthday.... and play with me and Sylvie" called out Draig as he seemed to be letting his guard down.

Zarra smiled and nodded as he too remembered those times when Draig was so small.

"Do you know who I am Draig" asked Zarra as he thought this to be a chance from the Heavens.

"N-no" shook Draig as his skin finally healed completely.

"Well, do you wanna know. You'll have to come here so I can tell you though, it's a secret" chuckled Zarra as tears started to well up in his eyes, he would get the chance to be the father he couldn't be for Draig in the past but he wished it hadn't been in such a way.

"Secret" asked Draig uncertainly.

"That's right and after I tell you we can go and get some Pumpkin bread just like you love" laughed Zarra as he put on a smile though his eyes dripped with tears, it hurt him to see his child having been broken like this but he wouldn't act on his anger. "Pumpkin Bread" asked Draig as his fearful look started to give way to a smile.

"As much as you want" laughed Zarra though it came out a bit choked.

Draig smiled and ran to Zarra excitedly with the innocence of a child.

"Whats the secret" smiled Draig as he stood in front of the one armed Mage.

Zarra leaned in and whispered the words he wished he could have said back then causing Draig to gasp in shock before leaping into the Mage's arms hugging him tightly not realizing his strength as the mage's bones constricted but he didn't complain.

'Thank you' though Zarra as he looked up to the sky
