Chapter 80 - How Can That Be?

One of the conditions stated that all the hospital employees except a few doctors were not allowed to meet or go near Yang Xinyu. In case that happened, they would incur a penalty of two million Yuan and a jail term for five years.

This was the harshest of contracts one could even think of. But the director was forcing everyone to sign it.

When the meeting got over, Wu Lina reached her room and fainted. She must have stayed like that for a long time. When she woke up she found herself on the floor. Her eyes welled. She started crying uncontrollably.

Just a day before they were making their wedding plans… just a day before they were talking about having kids…

'He had just recuperated from his illness… he won't be able to bear another separation… I won't be able to bear living without him… we were planning to live in his lounge… I was supposed to join a cooking class…'

These thoughts were killing her from inside. She cried until no tears were left in her eyes. How could God play such a cruel joke on her again and again? Isn't she allowed to have a family? Her parents had abandoned her… she yearned to see them… Yang Xinyu was the best thing that happened to her in four years… she craved for him… her heart ached…

She was sobbing without tears… she fainted again…

When she woke up, it was past 1pm. Holding the desk she managed to get up. She had some water and slowly walked to the head nurse's room. There was no way she could escape signing the contract. When she was signing the contract she could barely hold the pen in her hands properly. She was shaking. She bent over the doc.u.ment to take a look and saw that several people had already signed it. A tear from her eye rolled out and dropped on the doc.u.ment.

Across the table Su sāng ní was sitting and reading a patient's history chart. She saw the tear dropping on the doc.u.ment but didn't say a word. She had always suspected the closeness between Yang Xinyu and Wu Lina but never talked about it. Secretly she hoped that this relationship worked out because Wu Lina truly deserved it. However, God worked mysteriously. He never divulged his plans and termed them as destiny. Su sāng ní didn't show her sorrow as she continued to read the chart in a professional manner.

There was a moment of inactivity. Wu Lina wanted to run away from there. Finally she gathered enough courage and signed it.

"Wu Lina are you feeling okay?" asked Su sāng ní.

"Yes ma'am," she replied shakily.

"Why are you crying child?"

"I am not crying," she said. "I am just feeling very unwell…"

Su sāng ní could clearly see her swollen eyes even though her face was bent down. "Take care Wu Lina…" that's all she managed to say in the current situation.

The contract was signed, sealed and delivered to the director by the evening.

It was day one of her misery.

Wu Lina went to her apartment with a heavy heart. She was at a loss. She felt helpless. It was as if a freight train had run her down. Her love was right there around her, but she couldn't reach him or touch him now. 'How can that be?' she asked herself.

The loss impacted every part of her soul… of her being… She couldn't think straight and her activities ran automatically. She was in a daze and locked herself in her apartment for two days. So this is what you feel when you can't have your loved one. Yang Xinyu's loss would have been much more than hers when Ying Yue left him. Dark clouds of misery were acc.u.mulating in her skull. There was a tornado of thoughts that seemed to squeeze mental rationale out of her. She thought she would shut down for weeks.

She constantly checked her phone. Yang Xinyu had called her more than seventy times in the last two days. He had sent her over fifty messages. She wanted to reply to each one of them. But she could only hug her phone now and cry. Her body worked on automation. She didn't feel the need to eat food. The only call she picked up was that of the head nurse. She sounded so gloomy that the head nurse approved her leave.

Yang Xinyu had come to her apartment and banged on her door but she never opened it. He would stand out side the door and beg her to open it. He would talk to her from outside the door. He would sit there for long hours waiting for her to open it. She could hear his stifling cries at night. She would go near the door and keep her hand on it to feel him… They were connected…

At night when no one would be there he would sit outside her door and say, "Wu Lina talk to me… what have I done… why are you punishing me… I will not stop you from completing the course… we will do whatever you want… Wu Lina, please I beg of you… talk to me… we will not get married now… I have spent myself on you… I don't have any energy left… I love you…"
