Blake was beyond shocked when Amy said those words. Words he'd never expect anyone to say to him.
What was happening?
What did she just say? That she liked him? Him!?
So Jake and his grandfather were right after all.
The confusion on his face was evident and Amy was totally observant about it. None of his expressions has missed her, and they tend to be alot. Amy's heart thumped hardly against her chest wall as she eagerly waited for Blake to say something. She was growing impatient and the awkward stare which was mixed with silence was killing her. She could hear the loud rhythm of her heart sounding loudly in her ear, and she wasn't sure if it was still beating rhythmically.
"What did you just say?" Blake finally asked. He was still in denial. Maybe he hasn't heard clearly and was probably hearing things for himself.
"I said I like you" Amy slowly repeated.
"Me?" Blake asked again making Amy nod her head. "Yes"
"I have liked you for as long as I can remember" Amy started as she looked deeply into his eyes, while Blake remained quiet. "I don't know when it started, maybe it was the first day I met you or the first time you called Miss Walker, I really don't know. But all I know is I like you Blake, I like you alot" She paused to gauge Blake's reaction. He was just listening to her completely dazed by her confession.
"I know this might come as a surprise to you, but believe me I mean every word I'm saying to you right now. I can't spend a day without thinking of you, about your smiles, your talks and everything else that you do. And that's why I have invited you here and prepared all this just to tell you how I feel about you" It was at this point that Blake began to notice the unique preparations which Amy had made. He had thought this was the normal arrangement of the garden but now he could see the difference.
Amy had done all this?
He returned his eyes back to Amy and he stared at her quietly. Amy was done talking but Blake was still so quiet. He hasn't even uttered a sigh talk more of a word.
"Uhmm, Blake this is when you say something" Amy told him, her voice almost shaky. Blake's eyes widened when Amy said he was to say something. 'Say what? What was he supposed to say?' He has never been in this kind of situation before. No girl has ever done something like this before, so he didn't know how to react or what say about it. This was strange to him.
"I- I don't know what to say" He replied honestly.
"Anything would be fine. I can't help but feel nervous with your silence" Amy replied nervously with her gaze fixed on him.
"There really isn't any need to be nervous" He opened his mouth and said. Was he really trying to comfort her right now when he obviously needs to be comforted more than her since she had given him the greatest shock of his life.
He took a deep breath to calm himself. Sincerely he actually didn't know what to say or do at this point in time. Thoughts of abruptly standing up and walking out of here had gone through his mind, but that would be very hurtful and disrespectful to her. Amy didn't deserve that kind of treatment from any one not even from him.
Blake looked at her and said "Amy I'm sorry about my reaction to all this, to be honest I'm very much surprised. Something like this has never happened to me before. It was unexpected thus my reaction" He took in another deep breath again with his eyes locked on hers, searching deeply into it like he could see her soul. He continued...
"Amy you're very wonderful person. You're not just incredibly beautiful but you're compassionate, you have a great personality, and I admire how passionate you are about your works. As a matter of fact you're an intriguing woman and I feel it's more than an honor to be liked by you" He said while Amy blushed from all his praises.
"But I'm sorry Amy because you see i don't share that same feeling you have for me. I wish I do, but honestly I don't" The nervous smile which has been lingering on Amy's face slowly began to dissappear as she began to have some kind of heavy feeling in her heart.
Blake noticed the change in her countenance and he could feel his heart ache in a way he didn't know it could. But what should he do? He can't probably lie to her that he liked her when he knew he didn't. Neither could he give her false hopes and lead her on. Hell no, Amy deserved more than that. Dating her wouldn't be a bad idea, but he has never thought about the possibility of him dating anyone. Even if he would since he was bound to get married sometime in the future, he just haven't thought about it yet. That was a future he dreaded.
He was scared of losing that one person he'll learn to love just like his father. Blake has seen how his father daily missed his mother long after her death. He was a child when she died, so he had vague memories of her, but he has always seen his father always looking lonely, sad and depressed most of the times. And this has greatly scarred him. Even when his father finally moved on and fell in love Hillary, look at how she had destroyed him and the family.
Blake knew he was emotionally gullible like his father, he wasn't like his brother who broke women's heart for a living. And that was why he had adopted the method of keeping his distance from women. This was his only way of guarding his heart from being broken.
"Amy I'm truly sorry. I'm deeply sorry. Sorry for hurting you with my words, but my sincerity is all I can offer you now" Blake was really feeling bad as he kept watching different emotions flicker on Amy's face.
Amy felt like she was drowning at the moment. She had expected something like this, and she had prepared herself for something like this too, but it seems like all she had done to prepare herself against his rejection were too feeble. Because right now her heart and eyes were feeling too heavy for her to bear. She observed the pitiable look Blake was shooting at her and she hates it. She shouldn't be acting this way in front of him.
She'll never let him see her as this type of woman, someone weak who couldn't handle a simple rejection.
Amy flashed Blake a smile which didn't quite reach her eyes, "I understand. Actually I expected this so i came prepared. I - I felt I should tell you about how I feel or I might regret it for the rest of my life. You don't know if today might just be our last, so I thought I let you know that someone as gorgeous as me had a thing for you" She said forcing a small laugh, but Blake could through all her facade.
"Uhhmm...I hope things won't be awkward between us right? I hope we could still maintain the kind of relationship we had before now right?" Amy asked, suddenly feeling anxious that Blake might begin to treat her differently after now. She wouldn't want things to change because of this.
"Of course not. Things won't be awkward, I promise. I was hoping- maybe we can be - friends after this" Blake said heaiatantly. Even if he wouldn't be able to return Amy's feelings, he'd love to have her as a friend.
"I'll definitely understand if you don't want us to, I mean you ..."
"Nonsense of course. That would be great. Who wouldn't want to friends with the mighty Blake Beau" Amy said with a sweet smile.
"Mighty Blake Beau? Really?" Blake chuckled.
"It sort of suits..." Amy's words were interrupted when Blake's phone started ringing.
"Sorry. Excuse me" He said before taking his call.
"Big bro"
"What? But I don't have his prescription" Blake said. Obviously it was Jake on the other side of the phone.
"Alright I'll get going" Blake said before the call ended. He turned to Amy with an apologectic look on his face and Amy understood what that meant. She had heard his conversation after all.
"It's okay. Family calls" Amy said with a understanding smile.
"Thanks Amy. I owe you an apology dinner too okay"
"No it's fine" Amy declined.
"Come on, we're friends now. You don't have to be so modest with me. I owe you." He said as he stood up from his seat.
"And Amy, I'm sorry again" He said sincerely.
"I know" Amy nodded still smiling sweetly at him.
"Okay see at work tomorrow"
"Sure. See you tomorrow morning" Amy said. But Blake still stood there looking at her.
"What are you waiting for, come on go" Amy gestured for him to leave with her hands.
"What about you?" Blake asked with concern.
"I'll just wait for my friend here. You don't have to worry" Amy said dismissively.
"okay. I'll go then. Bye" He finally turned and left. Amy watched as he walked away, and her eyes became misty and her heart throbbed badly.
She picked up her wine glass and gulped it down. "Damn it Amy" She cussed before turning herself another glass.
It was going to be a long night.
