Hours had gone by in a blink of an eye. Zoey didn't notice the time as she was busy writing the script she told Cora about. Well, she just wanted to write it down because she felt restless without writing it down. Moreover, that was to remind herself how beautiful her and Matthew Xi's love story was in their previous life.
As Zoey continued writing, the memories of the past played in her mind in a perfect sequence. She could remember everything from the beginning and all the following events. The emotions she felt on every encounter with him, his expressions, the changes in his usual aloof voice, and the emotions in his eyes.
From cold to loving gaze, Zoey unconsciously smiled as she remembered vividly the way he looked at her. Those pair of sharp russet eyes peering at her as if she was the greatest treasure he had in his life. His gentle touches, afraid of breaking her as if she was the most fragile human-being in the world.
And when their hearts were overflowing with love and desire, they would become one. Body tangled in a dance, inhaling each other's breath; mouth to mouth, heart to heart, everything was due to their love for each other.
(Yes, my dear readers. Zoey is writing smut at the moment.)
"I love you…" She typed, her eyes softened as her mind could hear him saying those words each time repeatedly. Whenever he said those words, her heart still skipped a beat no matter how many times she heard them.
Just as Zoey continued typing, her fingers stopped as she heard a faint knock from outside, Slowly, the door opened and the towering figure of Matthew Xi came inside. Upon laying her eyes on him, Zoey closed her laptop as she raised her brows.
"You came!" She greeted, the side of her lips grew wider into a grin. Matthew arched his brows, and didn't expect such enthusiasm upon coming back. If anything, he expected a grumpy lady glaring daggers at him for bothering her too much.
His gaze then traveled to the documents scattered around the bed, the laptop on her lap which she closed, and the barely touched food on the tray placed on top of the bed table. As soon as he saw that, his lips curved down into a frown.
"Have you been working?" Cold as usual, Matthew asked as he assumed she was working on paperwork since she was forced to rest here.
"Yes! I have an important business meeting this week!" Proud, Zoey giggled as she shrugged her shoulders. Well, he must have run a background check on her so Zoey wasn't surprised by such a question. After all, Matthew's personality might've changed, but those habits, Zoey was certain he had them all along.
"How important was it that you couldn't touch your food?" Not sharing the same energy as her, Matthew slowly perched on the chair that was by the side of the bed. Placing his one leg over the other, he tilted his head to the side.
"Very very important." Zoey stressed, nodding her head as her eyes convinced him that what she was saying was true.
For a moment, Matthew remained silent. His gaze, however, never left hers as he studied her front. "I have a proposal." After a minute of silence, Matthew finally opened his mouth. But before he could continue, Zoey seemed to search something as her gaze moved fast around him.
"What?"
"I don't see the ring." With a creased brows, Zoey slowly returned her eyes back at him and frowned. 'Is he going to propose without a ring again?' She wondered internally, obvious that her mind wasn't fully focused on the current situation.
"Ring?" He repeated, biting his inner bottom lip to restrain himself from laughing. "I don't mean that kind of proposal, Miss Zhou. You could have told me, though." Having the urge to humor her, Matthew smiled playfully as his long eyelashes fluttered slowly.
His reaction as a faint chuckle reached her ear, Zoey snapped back to reality and realized that she was daydreaming. How stupid of her to think the proposal he was talking about was marriage proposal?
'Come on, subconscious mind. Wake up!'
"Sorry. I thought you'd fallen deeply in love with me and you already thought of marriage." As an excuse for her wandering mind, Zoey forced a chuckle out of her lips.
"No. Marriage is sacred and I don't want to treat it halfheartedly. I'm sorry to disappoint." Blunt as ever, Matthew shook his head as he spoke his mind loudly. "Also, I don't consider marriage right now. No, actually, I think it's nonsense in the first place." He corrected, gazing back at Zoey who was staring at him in dismay.
"Nonsense?" Her voice laced with disappointment, cringing at his statement as she knew he would eat these beliefs in the future. "Don't put a period on it. You might marry someone through a civil wedding just because the preparation time takes forever and you're impatient." In a matter-of-fact tone, Zoey warned.
"I doubt." Firmed and certain, Matthew replied. "Still, marriage is a serious topic one can't just do it on a whim. It's sacred. Don't marry unless you don't see yourself growing old with each other. A mutual agreement, a lifetime contract." Since she seemed to be taking marriage too lightly, Matthew felt the need to give her a lesson he naturally knew about the subject.
After all, he ran a background check on her. Therefore, he came to know that Zoey was never married or marrying any time soon. Although she had a cheating boyfriend for two years, their relationship appeared to be one-sided.
"Ohh…" As she listened and absorbed his statement, Zoey smiled. Did that mean Matthew saw himself growing old with her, that's why he married her? Well, that's a new perspective which moved her heart enormously.
Matthew never really explained this side of the story. Hence, hearing these remarks from his younger version and his views about marriage, Zoey finally understood why Vivian Xi didn't really interfere with their marriage. Her son valued marriage and wouldn't marry out of convenience.
"Do you understand?" After explaining more, Matthew asked.
"Yes, my love!" Zoey answered excitedly, causing a slip of the tongue which she immediately realized and covered her lips.
"Love…" However, covering her mouth was useless because he heard her clearly. "I like it." After some time of pondering, he expressed which made her gasp and widen her eyes.
"You… what?!"
