"So that's what happened…" Cora murmured, nodding her head in understanding. Currently, Zoey explained to her 'what had transpired' last night. Of course, Zoey omitted some big parts for Cora's own good.
"But Z, err…" Cora trailed off, glancing at Matthew who was sitting on the edge of the bed while she was perched on the chair opposite them. Ivan, on the other hand, sulked on the long sofa as he was told to behave by Zoey. How unfair!
He couldn't understand a word they were saying! Now he wondered if Zoey was taking Cora's side. But as he scrutinized their expression, it seemed they were discussing something else. "I feel left out." He murmured, pouting in silence as he collapsed on the long sofa; his arms crossed as he lay on his side.
"I might as well sleep." With that being said, Ivan closed his eyes, trying to get some sleep as he would be working as Zoey's assistant and all-around boy from the next day onwards. God knows he had expected the worst because his boss was none other than Zoey!
After contemplating for a second, Cora leaned closer to Zoey and whispered. "Z, does this mean you're using him as a rebound?" As she asked, Cora glanced at the man who was named Matthew.
"What, no?" Zoey's face distorted as she drew away. The next second, she realized that she was supposed to be heart broken by Ezekiel Tang. However, she just couldn't lie about Matthew being a rebound. It was just not appropriate!
"But…"
"I don't mind." Just before Cora could argue, Matthew chimed in bearing a smile on his lips.
"Huh?" Cora and Zoey faced him, question marks filled their thought bubble. They were literally whispering to each other. He didn't hear them, right? That's just legit scary.
"I mean I don't mind being a rebound for the time being." Matthew clarified, causing the two to gasp in disbelief as they looked at each other and then back to him who was amused to see their reaction.
"It's silent. You can hear even the slightest noise." Since their question was already plastered across their bubbly, youthful face, Matthew answered with a chuckle.
"He's creepy, Z." Aghast as she just said it would be scary if he heard them, Cora murmured as she tugged Zoey's arm.
"He's so attentive~" Unlike Cora's perspective, Zoey's eyes softened as she weakly clapped her hands. Matthew, who was seeing their different reactions, chuckled even more. He had never had such amusement in other people's interactions.
Or to be exact, Matthew never batted an eye at other people's interactions. Normally, he only minds his own business. So, it was safe to say that this was the first time in a long time that he watched someone interact with another, aside from doing business.
It was refreshing to the eyes; enough to give him entertainment as he was rather curious what kind of person Zoey was to her friend. Was she caring? A little childish? Whatever it was, he looked forward to discovering it himself.
"Jeez…" Upon hearing Zoey's remarks, Cora snapped from her trance as she shot Zoey a disdainful glare. This is not her friend! If her friend was this easy; she wouldn't be a sucker for good-looking men! However, when that thought crossed Cora's head, she recalled the charming Ezekiel Tang!
Aside from good looks, there's really nothing great about that guy! Well, his family standing was one good thing about him, but that's all. Thus, Cora's eyes that were full of disdain, changed into a conflicted one realizing the dilemma. She was wrong, this was truly her friend.
"Don't worry, I won't cheat if that's what you're worrying about." In a matter-of-fact tone, Matthew stated that incited suspicion from Cora.
"Of course, you won't." Drawn to him, Zoey giggled which didn't sit well with Cora.
Cora's right brow arched, perking her chin up as her eyes scrutinized the man from head to toe. How are you certain you won't do that? My friend might be a little dummy, but she runs her own company that's progressing steadily. How would I know that's not what you're after?" One after another, Cora spewed a series of questions, acting as Zoey's mother.
"Huh," He chuckled, observing the protectiveness of Cora towards her friend. How nice of her and how lucky Zoey was to have such a friend. They're rare.
If Matthew only knew that Zoey was very well-aware of his impression towards Cora, he wouldn't question why Zoey would fight the world for her. If only they both knew their roles in her life from her previous life until now, they would completely understand Zoey.
"Of course you can't." Cora smirked, a mocking scoff slipped past her lips as she shrugged her shoulders indifferently. "Even if I won't base on your looks, you can't say you don't have ulterior motives towards her." She stated, confident that he wouldn't be able to counter it.
Matthew blinked his eyes three times, staring at the cocky old-fashioned lady smirk at him. After a while, he nodded his head, his hand fished his wallet out of his tailored suit. He opened it, took out a piece of paper that was shaped into a card, and then clipped it in between his index and middle finger.
"Here," He said, tilting his head towards his hand as he handed it to her.
Cora, though suspicious, accepted it. However, she didn't bother looking at it as her gaze scanned his meek smile. "As if this would change anything," She spouted, rolling her eyes as she turned her attention back towards the card: a business card to be exact.
"Xi Matthew… XI Corp…" As she read the content of the calling card, Cora's eyes widened in disbelief. Slowly, her lips gaped open as she shifted her shocked eyes to the smiling man sitting across her.
"No way…" Cora gasped, covering her mouth that snapped Zoey back to reality.
"Huh? What's going on?" Lost as she was in her lalaland earlier, Zoey darted her head from Matthew to Cora, confused as she truly lost her grip on reality this time.
"Nothing, babe.." Matthew answered, winking at Zoey who instantly blushed by his flirtatious gesture.
