"I'm all good now. You can go." Zoey uttered, stopping in her tracks and turned to face him. "Thank you, Mister. I appreciate your help till now." She added, bowing her head slightly, hands behind her back. When she lifted her head once again, Zoey blinked her eyes numerous times as the corner of her lips twitched.
She stared at him, witnessing how his eyes judged the old building of Z Image Group. 'Yes, I know it looks old and it seems it has no future alright?' Her inner thoughts immediately defended.
The building was indeed old, not to mention the unfinished construction on the other side of the building. How could anyone expect her to afford a good place as her office? After all, Z Image Group was just about to turn one in three months. Therefore, one shouldn't expect anything from it.
Moreover, not that Zoey had anyone to rely on, in terms of finances. On the second thought, there was someone she could milk some money from, but even if the world ends, Zoey wouldn't ask for her biological father's help. She didn't want to involve him and use the reason that he lent her money while she was struggling when she became a successful businesswoman.
"You live here?" After some time of scanning the small building before him, Matthew's eyes shifted to the lady standing in front of him. "Second floor?" He asked, since he knew that Zoey was only renting one floor which stood as her office.
Matthew had the glimpse of the building's blueprints the other day. He also knew it was small and old. However, seeing the place with his own eyes, he couldn't seem to understand how Zoey could even live inside it.
It was an office where her few employees and Zoey herself worked. So, which part of this place was she using as her own private space? Matthew didn't know, but what he knew was that she was living like a rat.
"Yes!" Proud, despite the judgemental look in his eyes, Zoey crossed her arms as she turned towards the building. "I live inside, work inside, do business inside, and everything else you can think of!" She detailed, a smug smile on the side of her lips.
"Huh…"
"Uh huh, it's pretty convenient you know? You can hear everything even if it's just a whisper -- I can reach and get things easily too!" Zoey nodded her head, listing the good things about having a small office.
Unlike the Xi Corporation and other huge companies, Zoey didn't need to run from first floor to whatever floor just to get what she needed. All she had to do was shout and everyone could hear her! Wasn't that convenient? No wonder why even seven years later, Melanie Xue and the rest of the pioneer employees of Z Image Group were close to Zoey as they witnessed the company bloom together. They were also there when the lack of working ethics was very much alive in the said office.
"Is that so?" Matthew nodded in understanding, shoving his hand inside his pockets.
"Yes! That's why I don't need that nurse you've been shoving inside my place! She can't fit anymore!" In a matter-of-fact tone, Zoey uttered which Matthew answered with silence and an indifferent blink.
"Anyway, just tell me when's the next date. I am not available this entire week so it should be better if you postpone it to next week somewhere around the weekend!" Since he seemed to understand her point, Zoey clasped her hands together before rubbing her chin as she pondered about her schedule. After recalling that she has more free time next week, a large grin formed on her lips revealing her even white teeth.
"Mhmm." Surprisingly enough, Matthew just nodded his head in understanding and hummed a tune.
Although she was skeptical at his behavior, Zoey gave him the benefit of the doubt as she took a step back. "So, I'm off to work..?" Zoey took three steps back before her heel pivoted so she could walk normally.
However, just as she was in front of the building's entrance, her under eye twitched. Raising her left hand, a solid body collided into her arms that halted him from walking. "Mister, I thought we were clear that you don't need to walk me inside the building? Why are you still following me?" Annoyed, Zoey shot his side profile a glare.
"I'm not following you." In a matter-of-fact tone, Matthew slowly looked down to his right side. "Didn't I tell you that I am going to check my property?" He asked, reminding her of what he told her earlier.
"Your property?" Although she already got the gist of what he meant by that, Zoey still repeated.
'I knew it.' She thought internally. His strange behavior of letting everything she was saying slip was because he already had a plan. He only needed to say it so Zoey could feel the incoming shock she was expecting.
"This building…"
"Is now yours?" His words trailed off as Zoey finished his sentence in a mocking note.
"Correct." Void of emotion, Matthew nodded his head as his hand slowly held on her wrist that was blocking his way and put it down.
"I'm now your landlord and I'm here for business purposes." His hand around her wrist, although loose, was still holding onto it. "Don't sweat. I won't kick you out just because your monthly pay is late — if that's what you're worried about." Out of good will, he reassured which didn't actually affect her. If anything, her eyes just gleamed in dismay as this was an act of giving her an invisible leash.
"Whatever, Mister Landlord. Just don't bother me." Since it was futile to argue with him as he already owned the place now, Zoey shook her head sideways as she resumed on her steps.
However, just as she took three steps towards the entrance, she noticed that her left hand wasn't following her as he was holding onto it. "My hand." She turned, a frown visible on her lips.
"I am not familiar with the place and it scares me if it's haunted." Matthew expressed but his unchanging cool expression said otherwise. Upon the sight of her distressed front, the side of his lips tilted upwards.
"Guide me well, Miss Tenant.." Matthew humored, taking one small step to reduce the distance between them.
