"After further investigation, we were led to Young Master Bai. Are you the one driving it?" The Chief didn't beat around the bush, asking him directly.
"Uh…" Kenneth's jaw tightened, glancing at the solemn front of his father then scanned the same unfazed faces staring back at him. "Yes." Through his gritted teeth, he answered.
He couldn't rat out Zoey because they might capture her. If that happened, Kenneth was uncertain what would happen. After all, he liked Zoey as a person. Even if she turned out to be a bad person, until Zoey showed him her true colors, Kenneth would see her as a 'friend'.
"I apologize if I troubled Chief Leng earlier." Kenneth made a deep bow, expressing his apologies that he shouldn't be doing.
"Haha," However, unlike what Kenneth anticipated, which was his father's disappointed call, their waves of relaxed chuckles reach his ears.
Out of curiosity, Kenneth took a peek, raising his eyes up just to see Chief Leng and his father shrugging. There was a proud grin plastered on his father's lips, baffling him why.
"Ken, you could've just told us if you'd found very helpful information." With a gleeful tone, his father said; Kenneth lifted his head, question marks gradually filling his thought bubble.
"General Bai, your guy must have known that planning for a raid could get leaked. Although it's the least I expected, Young Master Bai did a great job leading us to one of the drug warehouses." Chief Leng chuckled, glancing at the still puzzled Kenneth before turning to the young man's father. "My team confirmed that it's the latest drug and the worth of the drugs we've recovered is worth fifty million yuan — it's not that huge but it's not a small amount either." He added, explaining to General Bai about the information he failed to add in his conversation with him.
"I'm relieved that Young Master Bai was the one who played as the vigilante. Although I don't advise him to repeat this method, we can finally have some peace regarding the person that led my men there." Chief Leng sighed in relief, turning to Kenneth with a meek smile on his lips.
Meanwhile, Kenneth processed every detail he could grasp from the conversation of his father and Chief Leng. 'Vigilante? Drug warehouse? 50 million yuan?' He repeated internally.
Kenneth's mind slowly placed the pieces together: from the photo of the car, leading Chief Leng's men to the warehouse, recovering drugs, and so on. After a minute of racking his brain, he was reminded of Zoey's words.
'You said you wanted to know how that car ended up in that state, right? You can take the credit for the good deed I've done!' He recalled her words and her confident grin as she winked at him.
'This is what she meant when she said I could take the credit!' He wondered, sighing as he shook his head upon being granted enlightenment.
'So, she was actually in pursuit by the police to lead them to the drug warehouse? That's why the car was in that state?' He muttered internally, his mind drifting away from Chief Leng and General Bai's discussion.
'Why?' He added, knitting his brows in confusion.
From his understanding of Zoey's character, she didn't seem to be the person who would do good deeds for nothing. Thus, leading her pursuers to the said location didn't make sense to Kenneth.
Why? That was because that just didn't seem to be what she would do. Why would she try to break the law just to punish the bad guys — for example, the drug dealers. The police in the city and their mobiles were all high end. Therefore, Zoey would get caught if she was using a car with a normal engine system.
Even if Kenneth considered the previous setup she requested, she would still have a tough time out-speeding the police cars. In other words, this ordeal this morning could have had a deeper trigger. Perhaps, she only used her knowledge about the warehouse.
Hence, Zoey led them there for diversion. Kenneth couldn't think of anything else that could make sense aside from this.
"Son," When Kenneth heard his father's voice again, he snapped from his trance as he turned his attention back to him.
"Yes, father?"
"Come, take a seat first. Chief Leng has a few questions for you." Unlike his usual stern tone, General Bai's voice had a touch of gentleness which startled his son.
"Ye — yes, sir!" He stuttered a little, swallowing down a mouthful of saliva before trudging to the other empty seat. However, before he could take a seat, General Bai stopped him.
"Take that seat." He ordered, pointing at the vacant chair across General Bai.
Kenneth's heart immediately paused, staring at his father and then moved his gaze to the seat he pointed at. It has been a while since his father considered him as someone who could do anything important — Kenneth was treated mostly as a failure in the family.
They couldn't accept that he wanted to pursue professional racing as his career. That's why he was in a very depressive state because of the pressure.
But now, General Bai was letting him take the seat of the second most important person in this gathering. "Yes, Father." Kenneth bowed his head in obedience, trudging towards the seat and filling its space.
"I have been very bold against my opposition towards my son's chosen career. However, with something like this, I know it's selfish of me to say this, but my son is truly a Bai." Upon seeing his son obediently take the seat that even Chief Leng didn't dare occupy, General Bai expressed as he turned to Chief Leng.
"Young Master Bai undoubtedly has the Bai blood running through his veins! Although Young Master Bai's methods were unconventional, the outcome is what's important. Chief Leng agreed, nodding his head in understanding.
Kenneth remained silent, observing and listening to their conversation. He would chime in every once in a while, but he was still astounded that his father sounded proud at him and his talent about cars.
'That lady...' Kenneth muttered internally. 'I'll surely return the favor to her.' He added, having the urge to chuckle because he didn't expect to attain such a feat and praises he didn't deserve.
In the middle of their conversation, Kenneth furrowed his brows. 'There's also bodies?' He wondered, his ears doubled its size as he listened carefully from Chief Leng and General Bai's conversation.
"Unfortunately, we've only recovered two bodies: one alive and one dead for a day. They might be gang members and probably had a problem with their boss. We still don't know. We're waiting for the person to wake up." Chief Leng explained to General Bai, adding his own conclusion why there was a person in the warehouse — on a brink of death at that.
As their discussion continued, Kenneth instinctively thought of the one plausible reason Zoey led the authorities there. "Chief Leng!" Upon having that thought inside his head, Kenneth immediately called and caught their attention.
"My apologies for disrupting your discussion with my fath — with General Bai." He immediately asked for apologies, bowing his head slightly once again. "But, can Chief Leng let me see that person?" Without further ado, Kenneth immediately requested, staring straight at Chief Leng.
Both middle-aged men wearing their uniforms from different areas of the government looked at each other. "The person we recovered along with the drugs?"
"Yes!" Without a second thought, Kenneth nodded his head. "The reason I knew about that place was because someone tipped me off. I wanted to know if it was him." He lied. But for some reason, he thought if this had anything to do with Zoey.
"Uh, sure.." Chief Leng glanced at General Bai before returning his gaze back to him and agreed.
