"Boss Zhou, I'm off! Bye bye~!" At the end of the day, Melanie bid her farewell to Zoey.
"Take care." Zoey nodded in response, watching Melanie close the door with Angelo standing beside the desk.
"Why does she always do that?" When Melanie left, Angelo inquired as he noticed this routine every day since he started working in Z Image Group. The only time Melanie wouldn't announce her leave was when Zoey wasn't around.
"Who knows? She will continue doing that even seven years later." Zoey shrugged, skimming through the documents on the desk.
"Huh?" Obviously, Angelo heard her mumble which made his brows knit. "Even seven years later?" He asked, his gaze studying her side profile.
"Hmm…" Zoey, who was still busy reviewing the contract she was about to propose to her next client in a week, hummed a soft tune.
"Really? Seven years? You really know she'll keep doing that until seven years, huh?" Still, at it, Angelo sassed sarcastically. Zoey sounded so certain that Melanie would keep doing it even seven years later. As if it wasn't a mere guess or a joke.
"I just know." Zoey shrugged, flipping the page as she didn't want to explain further.
Her answer, however, rang a bell in Angelo's head as he stared at Zoey's side profile. "You sound like him." He said, recalling Inigo saying the same thing.
"Sound like who?" Slowly, Zoey raised her head and met Angelo's eyes.
"You know who I mean." He shrugged, slowly leaning on the edge of the desk. "I remember him saying the same thing before I broke ties… I mean, turn my back on him." Angelo corrected, didn't want to sound noble as he was transparent to her as much as possible.
Therefore, Angelo admitted that he turned his back on Inigo as she already knew about that. He wasn't embarrassed about that decision, as he knew he couldn't follow a man who didn't share the same principle as him. Not just that, but also in regards to most things as his follower.
"The same thing?" As she listened, his words truly piqued her interest as she had all ears to listen.
"Yeah," Angelo paused, nodding his head lightly as a heavy exhale slipped past his lips. "But he kept saying eight years." His last remarks were akin to a bomb that exploded right in her face.
Zoey's mind immediately short-circuited her eyes widening as her lips paled. "What… what did you…" Words could hardly come out from her mouth, utterly stupefied at the sudden information that struck her.
"Huh?" Angelo stared at her reaction, and his knitted brows creased even more. "I'm saying Inigo lost his mind." Without further ado, he clarified in a matter-of-fact tone.
"He kept disposing people, even loyal ones, for the crime that he claimed they will do in the future. Why do you think I'll turn my back on him if that was only the problem?" Angelo raised his right eyebrow as he realized Zoey didn't ask him the main reason he broke his ties with Inigo. Or rather, Zoey didn't probe and just took him in without asking too much.
In his perspective, the reason she wasn't asking was not because she was being sensitive and considerate. In his eyes, Zoey wasn't asking because she would know if she couldn't trust him anymore. It might sound like a fantasy, but Angelo was certain Zoey was just as sharp as Inigo before 'he lost his mind'.
"Apparently, he also killed my one and only kin and says I should be thankful." Angelo shrugged, just dropping his own personal reason why he despised Inigo. After all, he only had one family by blood — his sister.
However, when he returned, she was gone. Just the thought of how much she had suffered before dying boiled his ignited rage that had been settling down within him. His jaw tightened as his eyes sharpened, moving it back to Zoey.
To his surprise, Zoey's expression was just blank. She was staring ahead, not even blinking as if her mind wandered off somewhere and got lost. "What's up with you?" Angelo waved his hand in front of her, snapping his fingers to get her attention, but to no avail.
"Hey." Angelo continued on waving his hand, raising his voice a little to snap her back to reality. "Hey!" Upon the nth call, Zoey finally blinked her eyes as she snapped back from her daze.
"What's wrong with you?" A little concerned, Angelo studied her front as he narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
"Uh…" As she gathered her thoughts, Zoey slightly shook her head a little as she cast her distracted eyes at him. "Nothing." She said, attempting to show him a reassuring smile which failed miserably.
"Are you sure? You look pale." Angelo raised his right eyebrow, unconvinced at her response. "If there's something you're not telling me, you should say that now." He added, his tone stern and commanding as he demanded transparency with her.
For a moment, Zoey just stared at him in silence. "I think I'm in trouble…" Under her breath, she muttered weakly.
"In trouble?"
"Yeah, I don't know why and how, but what I am certain is…" Her voice trailed off upon the ring vibration of her phone against the desk. Without a second delay, Zoey picked up the call when she had a glance of Ivan's name on the screen.
"Yo sis!"
"Did you catch him?" Immediately, Zoey asked right after the line connected; the same time Ivan greeted her.
"Uh…" There was a long pause in Ivan's end as he massaged his shoulder.
"I'll be there. Let's talk later." Before Ivan could respond to her question, Zoey ordered in utter seriousness. She then hung up and glanced up to Angelo. "You'll come with me." She said, closing the files she was skimming through earlier and placed them inside the drawer.
Angelo watched her hurriedly pick up her stuff in puzzlement. "Where?" He asked, seeing her took hurried steps out of the office.
Zoey abruptly took a pause in her tracks, holding on to the door's handle. "I told you, I don't know how and why, but what I'm certain is the game has changed." Without looking back, she uttered as her eyes glinted.. Without further ado, she pulled the door open and left.
