And so, Zachery confided in Sarah; he told her what had happened, Beth's drastic change in behaviour, and his stress about work. Zachery felt his burden lighten after letting it all out in one go.
"I sometimes just want to…" Through his gritted teeth, Zachery was about to curse but paused as he raised his gaze towards Sarah across him.
He took a deep breath and chuckled, shaking his head lightly. "I'm being too much, aren't I?"
"Haha! You just want to curse them and walk out?" Sarah chuckled as she continued his former sentence.
Zachery let out a faint chuckle and shrugged his shoulders. Well, he was the young master of the Kwan Family. Thus, when he was frustrated, he could not help but have that mentality which he gave up due to love.
"I can't help it. Sometimes, I just feel that they're purposely making things harder for me. Probably, Mother told them to do so." Zachery chuckled lightly.
But, he wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. After all, no one was happy about his decision of breaking his own marriage because of another woman. Aside from Sarah who understood him and would make herself available for him, and his brother who would secretly inform him about their family affairs; he didn't have anyone.
"Should I?"
Suddenly, Sarah queried which made him furrow his brows.
"Hmm?"
"Should I intervene? If I go to your place and tell them to make things easier for you, they will." In a matter-of-fact tone, Sarah proposed nonchalantly.
"I'm still part of the Zheng Family, Zach. Our family shares the same standing in society. So, I don't think they would reject such a simple request from me."
She added, beaming him a kind smile. For a moment, Zachery went silent while staring at her. Surely, Sarah was kinder and more considerate than he thought. However…
Zachery shook his head sideways. "No need, Sarah. I appreciate your help, but I can't keep relying on you when in fact, I played around behind your back."
Surprisingly enough, Zachery didn't hesitate to admit his wrongs and verbally relay it. Well, it was Sarah and she had been doing everything for him despite what he had done to her. Thus, Zachery couldn't keep denying his other rotten side.
"Zach, we shouldn't--"
"Sarah, stop saying we shouldn't dwell in the past because our present partially represents our past as well." Zachery stopped her midway as he spoke his thoughts with a bitter smile.
"I'm already grateful that you don't hold a grudge on me despite that. But, it would be easier for me -- for you as well -- if you just hate me and won't forgive me."
He added with a sigh. Sarah slightly knitted her brows as she stared at him momentarily. After a moment, Sarah took a deep breath and mustered her courage just to ask;
"Why?"
"Hmm?"
"Why did you think it would be easier for us if I hated you?" She asked, staring straight at him with her eyes glinting in hope. "Do I make things hard for you because I want you to be happy even though I'm not part of that happiness?"
Zachery was rendered speechless. Indeed, it would make him more determined to live up with his decisions with Beth. If Sarah was not this kind and would rather not see him, he wouldn't have this confusion in his heart.
"No. It's just…" Frustrated, Zachery pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a deep sigh. "I don't understand why you do all this. I mean, I know we're still legally married, but I don't think there were feelings involved in this marriage aside from the friendship we built since we didn't have a choice."
Sarah pursed her lips in a thin line upon hearing his explanation. How could Zachery be a player whilst being this dense?
"Zach," She called out softly, staring at him as he waited for her next words patiently. "That's because I love you."
Once again, Zachery was rendered speechless upon hearing her last remarks. His eyes blinked as he drew away as his gaze was fixed on her.
"What did you…"
"I love you, Zach. Sure, I didn't have feelings for you back then and agreed to our marriage because I didn't have a choice. But, I started liking you and before I could know it, I fell in love with you. I thought there won't be a problem since we're legally married, but Beth came along." Sarah paused as she smiled bitterly.
She would be a hypocrite if she said she didn't hate Beth for ruining her marriage. She wouldn't lie that she partially blamed Beth for their situation. However, the damage had been done and no one could reverse this anymore.
"Still, I would rather be friends with you instead of completely being cut off from you. I know it's silly and I sometimes ask myself why I should do this, but maybe, this is my way to love you." Still bearing the bitter smile, Sarah took a long inhale and exhaled it in one go.
"I'm not asking or waiting for you to reciprocate it. Don't feel pressure. I just want to be a part of your life, no matter how small my role is."
Slowly, Zachey curled his hand into a fist. He was already moved by Sarah's effort. But, hearing her sentiments, it hit him differently. He pity and appreciated her at the same time. How could he let go of this precious woman?
"Sarah…"
"Anyway, it's getting late. I'll go rest first. You can use any room you like -- we don't want to share the same bed again, do we?" Before the conversation went deeper and she would be hurt by his indirect rejection, Sarah strayed the conversation as she got up from her seat.
The initial bitter smile on her lips changed into a wide grin as she humored him with a wink. Without waiting for his reply, Sarah started walking away.
However, just as she took a few steps away from him, Zachery got up and grabbed her wrist. Before she knew it, he pulled her back and she landed in his arms that wrapped her tightly which made her eyes soften.
"I'm sorry, Sarah." He whispered in her ears. Her hand trembled as they slowly landed on his broad back.
Slowly, Zachery let her go, his hand on her shoulder as his eyes fixed on hers.. He didn't say a word and just stared at her before he leaned forward, dominating her lips without a second thought.
