"Grandpa did it to protect the Qin Empire. Who will lead the company if your name gets tarnished by the problem that Julian did? I'm pretty sure I will ruin the company, so are Rio and Kai. Ansel will cut his ears if he hears a single word about leading the Qin Empire for sure."
"Well." Dion rested his hands underneath his head, staring at the ceiling. "I thought these are all formalities though."
Lewis arched a brow as he stared at Dion's side profile. This little brother of his never showed interest in the company. So it was a little surprising he was bringing it up now.
"I know Ge has a plan. You won't report this discrepancy and open this case if you don't have a plan, right? I'm very sure Assistant Wang will not follow your orders if he knows the Qin Empire had to declare bankruptcy." Dion turned his head in Lewis's direction. "Ge, just in case you don't know, I don't care if you abuse a bit of the power you hold. This case is not your fault, nor Grandpa's fault. It is Julian's and I don't think it's fair that you play it fair and square."
"You shouldn't worry about that." Lewis chuckled while shaking his head. "Just keep making hit songs just in case."
"Ah... right!" Dion suddenly sat upright. "I should start writing a lot of songs, so we won't starve to death. I will be a hero in this family."
Lewis watched Dion as he reached for his small bag and put his earplugs on. He truly didn't expect to hear such suggestions from this brother of his. However, he appreciated Dion's remarks.
While Dion busied himself writing lyrics from the surge of inspiration he had while babysitting Devon, Lewis fixed his eyes on her.
"I will also have to work," he said before letting her hand go to get the documents on the table. As Lewis set up his mini office right next to her bed, Devon's finger twitched.
Dion turned his head to him. He observed him for a while before he spoke.
"Ge, when is the last time you slept?" he inquired, watching Lewis pause as he raised his head at him. "Are you just busy so you barely sleep or... did your problem return?"
Lewis kept quiet for a second. "Sleep requires peace, Dion."
"I see..." Dion rocked his head but said nothing anymore. It seemed the answer to his question was both. The problems with the Qin Empire and Devon's current start wouldn't let Lewis sleep.
KNOCK KNOCK!
Lewis and Dion slowly veered their eyes towards the door upon hearing a light knock. When the door slowly opened, Lewis raised a brow as soon as he saw Quentin.
"You should stop visiting my wife." He breathed out as he glanced at the bouquet Quentin was carrying but proceeded to place his laptop on the small desk. "Listen to me while I am being nice."
Quentin smirked as he stood on the other side of the bed. He was still carrying the bouquet with one hand while his other hand was inside his pocket. He had been discharged a week ago, but he was still forbidden to move around too much. During the past two weeks, Quentin was the third person who would visit her frequently.
"Mister Qin, what are you going to do? The Qin Empire is so busy and on the brink of bankruptcy." He snorted and shook his head lightly, gazing at Devon. The ridicule in his eyes was instantly replaced by gentleness as soon as they landed on her.
"You should be thankful that the De Luca isn't messing with you in these tough times. Rather, we're helping you. Appreciate us a little, will you?"
"Even without the De Luca, the Qin Empire will persist."
Quentin glanced at Lewis with disinterest. "If that floats your boat, so be it."
"You only have five minutes. Don't think of touching my wife," Lewis cautioned while Quentin rolled his eyes before heading to the vase he bought for his flowers. Since Lewis never failed to buy his wife flowers, Quentin bought a personal vase for the flowers he bought for her.
This may look strange for Lewis to allow his wife's ex to visit her. He didn't have a choice. The doctor told them it was better if those close with Devon could talk to her often. Hence, although Quentin aggravated him, Lewis still considered the person's character — and the person living inside this body.
Also, Dion was almost living in this room. So, it reassured Lewis that Quentin wasn't doing anything during his visits.
As a routine, Lewis sat beside her bed, holding her hand while his eyes were on the laptop's screen. On the other side of the bed, Quentin dragged a seat and sat down, darting his eyes from Lewis and Devon.
A bitter smile appeared on his lips. 'I guess I became a masochist for visiting her only to see this.' He thought, shaking his head as a shallow breath slipped past his lips.
Meanwhile, Dion didn't pay attention to those two. He was used to Quentin's presence by now and the silence they would all share. As the two were busy with their own work, Quentin fixed his eyes on Devon.
For the past two weeks, he kept thinking about what Julian said and Devon's reaction. He forgot about it when he was still a patient. But it bothered him. He tried drinking just to prove that Julian was messing with him and Devon was just too scared at that time. But Gabriella was very strict; even now, his sister was just outside, waiting for him. So drinking was out of his options.
'I shouldn't think about it too much,' Quentin told himself, mentally nodding his head. 'CEO Qin said she had a minor accident that erased most of her memories. That should be the reason...'
"Huh?" His thoughts trailed off as he let out a confused hum loudly. Lewis arched a brow as he glanced at him, only to see Quentin staring at Devon with knitted brows.
"What?" Lewis inquired as he gazed at Devon.
"Her eyes... I think they just move..."
Lewis frowned as he turned his body to check on Devon, albeit not hopeful. Dion had also noticed that the two were talking, so he removed one of his earplugs.
"Did I just imagine it?" Quentin murmured when Lewis raised his head, bearing a poker face.
"Mister De Luca, your five minutes is almost..."Lewis couldn't finish his sentence when her hand squeezed his hand lightly. His heart immediately raced as he gazed at her, frozen in place when her eyes behind her eyelids flicked before they opened weakly.
"Love...!" he sprung up to his seat, staring at her in panic. "Dion, call the doctor."
Dion, who was shocked, opened and closed his mouth like a fish. But he instinctively rushed outside to get a doctor. Quentin, on the other hand, also stood up with his eyes on those weak eyes slowly opening.
"Dev..." Seeing her eyes open for the past two weeks brought all sorts of emotions to their hearts. But one reigned, relief.
Devon opened and closed her eyes weakly, seeing a person's blurry face hovering over her. Her mind was still buzzing from all the medicines, so she instinctively took her time. She let out a weak grunt as her body ached all over and she felt like a giant rock was placed on her.
She blinked and blinked until her vision got clearer. The first thing she saw was Lewis' worried countenance, making the corner of her lips curl up weakly. His mouth was moving, but his voice sounded distant.
'What is happening?' she wondered inside her mind. She blinked once again, and she caught a figure in the corner of her eyes. She moved them and caught Quentin looking at her in shock. He was pale and barely blinked as if he had seen a ghost, making her let out a weak chuckle.
When she blinked again, the doctors were already on the side, and Lewis was gone. Devon glanced at him once again, and he was just looking at her with the same expression. She tried to raise her arm, but she could barely lift her hand. She tried to avoid the light that was flashing in her eyes. The quick movements and the indistinct conversation made her a little dizzy.
In the end, Devon felt her eyes grow heavy as they closed once again.
After the doctor examined her, Lewis looked at them with wide eyes. "What happened?"
Quentin and Dion, who were standing on the side, also looked at the physician without blinking. They held their breath, waiting for the doctor's words.
"Miss Lin is still very weak, but her vitals are stable. She is still high on drugs, but we will lower her dosage and keep monitoring her.." The doctor offered a kind smile to this dedicated man. "Please let us know if she wakes up once again, Mister Qin. Congratulations."
The doctor's words felt like someone had just plucked out a thorn in their heart. Lewis pressed his lips into a thin line as its corner turned up, feeling his eyes growing hot in tears. Not just him, but Dion and Quentin looked at her in relief.
"Love," Lewis whispered with a shaking voice, resting his forehead against hers. "Thank you."
Unbeknownst to him, this was just the beginning of another nightmare.
