Despite the confusion, Lewis and the Qin family and the selected people who came to bid her farewell waited. They waited and waited and waited, getting all anxious with every passing second. Although they were glad by this sudden turn of events, none of them raised their expectations.
What if it was just another mistake? That was just akin to stabbing themselves for the second time.
Lewis paced back and forth inside the room, where they were waiting for good news. He ran his hands through his hair, shaking his other hand. The waiting was making him very anxious, as he couldn't sit still. His heart was racing to an extent he had to catch up to his breathing.
Meanwhile, the people inside the room, the Qin brothers, Marshall, Bella, Derek, and Quentin, could only watch him. They never spoke a word, glancing at the door every once in a while.
They stayed like that for thirty minutes until it had become an hour and then the clock hit two. The longer they wait the more gloomy the room had become. The suspended air only shattered when the door finally opened. Lewis immediately rushed towards it, making the doctor step back at his speed.
"How is she?" he asked without beating around the bush.
The doctor cleared his throat as his eyes traveled to the rest of the family. Everyone, even Marshall Qin, (except Quentin) slowly stood from their seat with their eyes on him. The corner of the doctor's lips turned up as he set his eyes back on Lewis.
"Miss Lin's condition is a little tricky and we sincerely apologize for this --"
"How is she?" Lewis cut the doctor's formalities as that didn't matter to him. "I don't care why you proclaimed her brain dead. I know enough about anatomy that this sort of thing can happen. All I want to know is how is my wife?"
The doctor pressed his lips into a thin line as he took a deep breath. "Miss Lin will still have to go through extensive care and should be monitored. Although she is not brain dead, she is still in a coma. Being comatose might be something that shouldn't be celebrated, but it is still a little better than the former. We still didn't know when she will wake up, or if she will wake up at..."
Once again, the doctor couldn't finish his sentence because Lewis suddenly pulled him into his embrace. Lewis patted his back, sniveling.
"Thank you," Lewis expressed under his deep breath. "Really. Thank you, Doctor."
The doctor glanced at the Qin Family whose dead eyes previously now had some hope in them. He could only offer a weak smile as he patted Lewis's back. This wasn't what he expected from this man, but he appreciated it. When Lewis let him go, the doctor's smile remained.
"We still don't know when will the patient wake up, but let us all hope..." The Doctor briefed them about what would Devon have to go through. Everyone listened to his every word, afraid they would miss a single word from him.
After the doctor bid his farewell, every one of them didn't know whether to sigh in relief or still feel anxious. They came in here to let her go, but it seemed she didn't want to go just yet. Lewis looked at them as his eyes instinctively settled on Dion. The latter was tearing up as Lewis nodded at him without saying a word.
They didn't celebrate, but it relieved their hearts a little. No one knew when she would wake up, but they remained hopeful. They would wait for her... for sure.
******
Two weeks had passed since Lewis and Devon's wedding. She was now transferred to a normal private room as she had passed the critical stage.
Lewis brushed her cheek with his knuckles lightly, smiling subtly while staring at her. "How are you?"
The sound of her heart rate from the monitor was what answered his question. Lewis had been busy with the Qin Empire and the tax evasion case that rattled the entire country a week ago. It was chaotic outside as this was the biggest crisis the company had faced since its establishment.
Despite that, he never failed to visit her. He even spent his nights in this very room ever since she was transferred.
"My love, you are my calm. I can only rest with you around," he whispered, bearing the same gentle smile on his face. "I really miss you."
Suddenly, a light knock from outside reached his ear. Lewis raised his eyes and saw Dion coming in with a paper bag with him.
"You came?" Lewis inquired as he watched Dion drag his feet towards the table inside the room.
"I've been here since morning. I just grabbed something for dinner. Bought her some sweets too." Dion raised the paper bag, something he bought for Devon just in case she would wake up tonight. "Ge, you want some?"
"No, thank you." Lewis shook his head as he let Dion alone.
Aside from Lewis, Dion had been with her more than him. His brother would stay in here all day, sometimes he would sleep over. The only reason Dion goes home was to shower and change. Dion truly loved Devon. That was why Lewis felt reassured leaving her to settle some business matters.
"By the way, Ge, I heard they interrogated grandpa today." Dion broke the silence while he put the sweets inside the mini-fridge. "Did he really have to drag ten lawyers with him? I heard Grandpa offended many people during the interrogation. Really... during this time of crisis, Grandpa is the only person whose resolution is to stay as arrogant as possible."
"That's just how he is. I bet he didn't need to speak a word." Lewis let out a bitter chuckle as he held her hand. "I feel sorry for him."
"Why?" Dion looked back and cast Lewis a knowing look. "Grandpa did it to protect the Qin Empire, not you. Who will lead the company if your name gets tarnished by the problem that Julian did? I'm pretty sure I will ruin the company, so are Rio and Kai.. Ansel will cut his ears if he hears a single word about leading the Qin Empire for sure."
